Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 377
Chapter 377:.
Becky was sitting in the doorway of the villa when we got home.
She looked like she had been sitting there for a long time. She was wrapped in a coat and shivering uncontrollably.
As soon as she saw our car pull into the yard, she stood up and gave Derek a look. “Derek!”
Derek opened the driver’s seat door, closed it and turned to look at Becky. With a frown, he asked, “Why are you sitting here?”
Becky snorted, and her nose was red from the cold. She replied in a plaintive voice, “Everyone I know is spending New Year’s with their loved ones, while I’m alone. I feel lonely and miserable. In order not to sink into an abyss of despair, I have come to celebrate with you. I had no idea you were not at home and did not answer my calls. I thought you had gone out briefly, so I waited here instead of coming home.”
Becky was quite the actress. She was putting on a good show effortlessly. She was an expert at arousing people’s sympathy for her.
“Where’s the key, don’t you have the key? You should have gone inside instead of standing outside in the cold,” I said.
Becky’s acting ability was excellent. She didn’t flinch or panic. She merely said more ruefully, “I lost the key. I don’t even know how, where and when it was lost.”
She sneezed loudly after saying those words. Her eyes also glistened with tears.
If it had been someone else who had caught a cold, my heart would have been with her. I would have taken her to the room, wrapped her in a thick comforter and made her something light to eat. But it was Becky. I couldn’t bring myself to care for her.
As far as I was concerned, she didn’t deserve any of my sympathy or care. I had risked my life to save her, but she misunderstood me and accused me of setting her up. I was very disappointed and furious. Becky was an ingrate who did not hesitate to bite the hand that fed her.
No matter how well I treated her, she continued to antagonize me.
“You’ve caught a cold. I’ll ask Timmy to send you to the hospital right away.” Derek pulled out his phone and was about to make a call.
Becky quickly grabbed his hand. “No, Derek, are you trying to send someone? Don’t you want to spend some time with me? The cold is mild. I’ll be fine as soon as I take a nap. Don’t send me away, okay?”
Derek sighed and tried to persuade her. “Becky, don’t be stubborn, have you forgotten you’re an actress now? You can get a part in a movie at any time. You wouldn’t want to miss any opportunities or look like a disaster on screen, would you?” These words hit the nail on the head.

Becky’s stubbornness faltered and she looked defeated.
After calling Timmy, Derek looked at his wristwatch and said, “My wife and I will be going somewhere very soon. Do you want to wait inside or outside for Timmy?”
Derek’s tone wasn’t harsh, but it had a sense of authority.
Becky couldn’t help but lower her head in dejection. Then he whispered, “I’ll wait here.”
“Okay.” Derek walked in leaving a note of finality in his wake.
Just as I passed Becky, his pitiful, dutiful expression changed to hatred, anger and unwillingness. He looked at me as if he wanted to pounce on me like a predator.
Her duplicity did not surprise me at all. I was used to it by now.
I ignored her and headed straight for the villa. Derek and I changed and came out to see that Becky had already left.
We both got in the car and drove out of the villa. Until then I had no idea where we were headed, but from the routes I was taking, I gathered that we were on our way to where I had planned to visit.
Finally, Derek stopped the car at the foot of the mountain. We got out of the car, bought some bouquets of flowers and headed up the mountain.
It was customary for people to visit the graves of their loved ones in the early days of the new year. There were many visitors at the cemetery and many others were probably on their way. The dead were not left out of the New Year’s celebration. First we went to Derek’s mother’s grave.
Next, laid a bouquet of flowers at Aaron’s mother’s grave. Then we went to my parents’ graves. As we stood in front of my father’s grave, Derek stared at the headstone as if lost in thought.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, gently nudging him in the side.
He slowly turned to look at me and said softly, “You had a hard time after your father died, didn’t you?” My heart ached at his words.
I lifted my head and smiled bitterly. “Yes, but I defied the odds and came out stronger.”
Derek took my hand and looked back at my father’s headstone. He said sincerely, “Hi, Dad. My name is Derek and I’m your son-in-law. Don’t worry about Eveline. I’ll take good care of her.”
His words sounded so warm, like his hand holding mine at that moment. Now there was a sense of wholeness in my heart. Maybe God had finally taken pity on me by sending Derek to be by my side.
