I couldn’t calm down even after I got home. I slept for almost a whole day. When I woke up, it was almost dark the next day.

While I was sleeping, I had several strange dreams, and in those dreams I was really scared. I tried to remember them, but I couldn’t. I slept for intermittent periods.

Derek helped me out of bed. “It’s okay. We’ll buy a new one tomorrow, and get a replacement SIM card.”

As I changed clothes, Derek told me to put on something thick, since it was cold outside. Once we were out of the house, he held my hand.

Slowly, we walked down the road. I remembered that in the past we had taken a walk along this same road. That day I told him that I loved him.

At that time, I told him that he had the capacity to hurt me, and he told me that the same thing happened to him. It happened only a few months ago, but now, it seemed like the distant past.

“The snow is melting,” I muttered.

The river by the road had come back to life because the water was flowing again.

Also, the dead grass on the riverbank was resurfacing from under the half-melted snow. Soon we stopped by the river.

Derek stared at it and said, “Snow may accumulate, but in the end it melts into nothingness. And, like snow, everything that happened in the past will eventually disappear. The seasons change, Eveline. Everything in this world seems to stay the same, but everyone undergoes subtle changes given enough time. The only thing that doesn’t change is that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west every day. People change too. But once we replace someone we love, we stay by their side and love them to the end.”

The clear sound made it seem like it washed the world of its sins, and at the same time, it washed the dirt from people’s hearts.

After that walk, I finally regained some appetite. I hadn’t eaten anything all day. In fact, my stomach had been empty for a long time. Therefore, I ate a lot at dinner.

After a whole day’s sleep, I couldn’t sleep anymore. So I decided to take out the usb disks that Lavinia had given me.

The usb disks seemed to have opened the door to a new world for me. The more I examined the files they contained, the more excited I became.

In the morning, Derek bought me a new phone, and even helped me change the SIM card. After inserting the card, I received a message from Louise.
