Chapter 40:.

Even though we had already had sex, it was just a drunken mistake. Our marriage was a quick decision. In fact, I wasn’t ready to get married again. And because of that, I didn’t dare to set foot inside the villa door.

Suddenly, Derek held out his hand and patiently ushered me inside. Once I stepped back into the magnificent living room, he set my suitcase down, staring me straight in the eyes “As of today, you are now the mistress of this house. Everything in here belongs to you,” he said to me.

Even though it was really happening, it all seemed so surreal to me. It made me think I was having a dream.

Derek came over to me and put his hands on my shoulders as he leaned close to my ear. “Including me,” he whispered.

His words made me nervous and made me take a step back. I had no idea what he meant by that. Maybe he was hinting that we would be sharing the same bed.

I wasn’t sure if he realized I was embarrassed. Suddenly, he said, “I’ll take your things upstairs. You can sort them out later by yourself. Since you have your own habits about your daily needs, put everything where you want it.”

So, he took my suitcase upstairs and I followed him, still feeling uncomfortable.

“Which room will I stay in?” I had been holding back that question, but finally asked it once I reached the top step of the stairs.

Derek stopped, put down the suitcase, turned around and walked toward me.

As I saw him approaching, I panicked and wanted to back up, but I miscalculated my stride, which caused me to almost fall. Fortunately, he caught me just in time. As he clung to my waist, I held tightly to his clothes to make sure I didn’t fall.

As I became uncomfortable from his stare, I suddenly heard him chuckle.

“Eveline, you are already a married woman, but here it seems to me that you are even more shy than a virgin.”

Since I could stand my ground now, I gently pushed him away. His teasing left me a little embarrassed.

I tucked my hair behind my ears, visibly uncomfortable. “No, I just think things are moving too fast between us.”

“Isn’t that a good thing? Most women prefer their husbands to move fast, right? You prefer it the other way around? Well, we can try to slow it down another day.” Derek understood every word he was saying, but I could tell he was doing it on target: I now understood that this man had many facets.

When he was serious, he always had a steely gaze that made him difficult to approach. But when he was lighthearted, he was capable of nonchalantly throwing out double entendres and dirty jokes. His jokes always caught me off guard, and I felt embarrassed every time he flirted with me

“Can’t you be more serious, Derek?” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Am I not being serious enough? The topic I brought up is a normal topic between married couples, isn’t it? I’m being dead serious.”

I took a deep breath feeling as if I was suffocating from his breath seeping into my skin.

Not long after, Derek stopped teasing me and continued to carry my suitcase into a room: Once there, he opened the door to the room and set my suitcase down.

“This will be your room. You slept here last time, remember? Of course, there are many other rooms available. If you prefer another room, you can choose the one that pleases you.”

I was relieved to hear that. I didn’t want to be picky.

“Oh, that’s fine. This room is fine, so I’ll stay here,” I said.

Derek leaned against the wall, pulled out a cigarette and lit it. After taking a puff, he turned his attention to me.

“I’ll stay in the next room. If you ever feel scared or lonely when you sleep alone, my door is open to you twenty-four hours a day. You are welcome anytime.”

The smile on his face never faded, and he seemed quite calm and serious. If you didn’t hear what he had just said, you wouldn’t realize he wasn’t serious when he brought it up.

That said, Derek told me that there was something he had to take care of, so he left the room and asked me to stay home and rest .
