As I was putting on my shoes at the door, I saw a new pair of women’s sneakers on the shoe rack. They even had a tag on them.

Suddenly, I felt uncomfortable. In our time in this world, we would be kind to many people, and we would be treated with the same kindness by many others as well. However, sometimes we could not respond to the kindness of others. Sometimes, it was inevitable to hurt someone.

I did not ask Alvaro to drive me home. I asked him to drop me off at the roadside as we entered the town center. There was a small shopping center there.

“I’ll buy some of your favorite food and cook you a nice dinner at home.” I deliberately tried to look happy.

When I got out of the car, Alvaro got out too.

“Thanks for driving me here.” I started to walk away.

“Eveline,” he said, trying to stop me.

I turned and saw him hold out his arms and sketch a smile.

“You’re not even going to give me a goodbye hug?” He was always flirting with me. I ignored him and tried to walk away. However, he grabbed my hand and hugged me tightly.

He hugged me so tightly that I was almost suffocating.

“If Derek ever harasses you, know that you can come back to me,” he whispered in my ear.

I let go of his embrace, turned and hurried away without even responding to his words.

I walked around the mall for a while, but didn’t buy anything. When I came out, Alvaro’s car had already left.

As I walked down the street, I felt very confused. Naturally, I didn’t plan to go back to Derek. After all, I still had pride. Maybe I could come to an agreement if the dispute was between the two of us. However, now that there was a third party involved, it was a very different story. I had already suffered enough. This time I preferred to leave with my head held high.

I didn’t know how far I had walked. Suddenly, I noticed a car pull up beside me. I stopped walking and saw the back door open. It was Derek who got out of the car.

This time, without hesitation, I started to run away from him. But he soon caught up to me and picked me up. Ignoring my protests, he shoved me into his car.

“Come on,” Derek said to Timmy as Timmy drove the car.

I pushed Derek’s hand away and started pounding on the door.

“Timmy, stop the car, please. I want to get out.”

Naturally, he wasn’t going to listen to me. Derek held me in the seat and lifted the bulkhead separating the front and back seats.

I was clutching my hands tightly, my eyes were bloodshot and I was breathing hard. Sooner or later, I would have to face him.

“Derek, let go of me.”

Right now, I was surprisingly calm.

After these past two days, I had become sensible. For countless times, I had imagined how I would react once I faced Derek again. I thought I wouldn’t cry or break down. And I thought I would be calm enough to act as if his decision that night hadn’t broken me.

Indeed, I didn’t care. Judging by his reaction, he seemed annoyed by my apathy towards him. Then, he started kissing me on impulse.

His lips were burning, and his breath felt hot. I didn’t even try to resist, because I knew it would be futile. However, I didn’t respond to his kiss either.

I merely clenched my fists and gritted my teeth, enduring what he was doing to me.

My uncharacteristic indifference and the fact that I kept my cool broke his spirit. He kept kissing my lips, cheeks and forehead, as if he was getting frustrated.

In a husky voice, she said, “Honey, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

“Mr. Sullivan, where are we headed now?” asked Timmy.

“Home,” Derek said.

“But, sir…” Timmy stopped dead in his tracks.

“I said take us home,” Derek said sternly.

Finally, Timmy drove us to Derek’s house. I wanted to get out the other side of the car, but Derek pulled me out of the car and into the house.

He placed me on the couch and started kissing me again. But, to his dismay, I didn’t respond to any of his advances.

The familiar atmosphere brought tears to my eyes. Somehow, I thought I would never see this place again.
