Chapter 404:.

The doctor cleaned the painted blood around Derek’s wound, then concentrated on the operation. Meanwhile, the nurse acted as his assistant, handing him the tools he needed from time to time.

Derek must have been in a lot of pain right now. Although his eyes were closed and he wasn’t even grimacing, the beads of sweat on his forehead gave away his true emotions. And sometimes I could feel him gripping my hand tighter.

When the doctor was about to remove the bullet, I didn’t want to look at her, but I couldn’t resist the urge to do so. Once it was removed, Derek’s wound gushed blood.

Derek winced and groaned in pain. I helped him wipe the beads of sweat from his forehead. The doctor then medicated the wound and healed it quickly.

He handed me several bags of medicine and said, “These pills must be taken orally. I have written down the correct way to take them. Make sure the wound does not come in contact with water. Your husband has a fever, so make sure he drinks enough water and eats light food.”

After accepting the medicine, I said, “I understand. I will.”

Soon, Timmy escorted them out. I noticed that he looked worried. He looked at Derek as he lay on the bed and said to me, “Please take care of him.”

When they had left, I went back to the bedroom. Derek seemed to have fallen asleep already, but he looked uncomfortable.

I walked over to the bed and stared at his bandaged arm. I didn’t understand why he had been shot. That’s when I touched his forehead and saw that it was still warm.

I brought a wet towel and put it on his forehead.

“Honey!” cried Derek suddenly, his eyes wide with horror.

As soon as he saw me, he breathed a sigh of relief and grabbed my hand.

“Thank God you’re here, honey!”. Perhaps due to blood loss, his face was pale as a ghost.

He was staring at me so intently that he seemed afraid I would leave or disappear if he didn’t look at me.

“Now that you’re awake, you should take your medicine.”

I pulled my hand away, went to get the medicine and a glass of water. I helped him sit up and take the medicine. Then, I helped him lie down.

As soon as I put down the glass of water, he took my hand again and stared at me.

“I’m so sorry I broke your heart, my love.”

I didn’t want to be carried away by his words, so I acted indifferent towards him.

“Let’s not talk about that now. Concentrate on healing your wound,” I told him.

“Okay,” he said, still reluctant to let go of my hand.

“How did you get shot?” I asked.

Derek was silent for a moment. Then he said, “It’s inevitable that businessmen have enemies, so I’m not surprised that some of them want me dead.”

Although I didn’t know much about business, I knew that competition was inevitable in the business world. However, I thought no one would be crazy enough to literally kill their competitors. I thought he was lying to me, but decided not to ask any more questions.

Since he didn’t seem to want to tell me the truth, I was sure I wouldn’t get an honest answer out of him. Derek kneaded the back of my hand with his thumb.

“Why do you look thinner, haven’t you been eating well?”

I ignored his concern and brought my other hand to my belly. Then, I removed my hand from hers and stood up.

“I’m going to cook – what do you want to eat?”

She stared at me and replied, “Cook whatever you want to eat. I’ll eat whatever you serve me.”

The doctor had told me that Derek should keep his diet light for the time being, and I wasn’t much for greasy food right now, so I decided to make some pumpkin porridge.

Derek’s shoulder was badly injured and it was uncomfortable for him to move his arm, so I had to feed him myself.

After helping him up and leaning against the headboard, I started feeding him, all the while keeping my eyes on me. If I remember correctly, something similar had happened to me before. I still remembered what he said to me that day.

“Eveline, I really want to live a happy life with you.”

As that thought crossed my mind, I felt a lump in my throat and my vision blurred with tears.

“The porridge has gone cold. I’ll take some more from the pot.”

I immediately stood up, as I didn’t want Derek to see that I was crying. However, he pulled me up and urged me to sit down. He took the bowl out of my hand and placed it on the bedside table. He urged me to lean against his chest and planted a kiss on my head.

It was as if he was comforting me in his own way.

“I don’t want to eat anymore. I just want to hold you,” he said.

The truth is, I missed the warmth of his embrace. But every time I thought about how he had chosen Becky over me, my heart broke and my rationality brought me back to reality.
