Chapter 421:.

Alvaro took me to the hospital.

After the ultrasound diagnosis, the doctor smiled at me.

“Congratulations! You are pregnant with twins.”

My heart gave me a sprint in my chest and I was taken aback.

Seeing me leave the room in a trance, Alvaro worriedly snatched the diagnosis report from me.

“Twins!”

He could not hide his joy. The next moment, however, almost as if realizing that he should not express his joy, Alvaro closed his mouth.

“They’re not mine, why am I happy?”.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the drastic change in his expression: it seemed comical. At first he looked grumpy and then burst out laughing. It was the best news of my life. Not only had I started a business, but I was pregnant with twins. Now life didn’t seem horrible.

The last few weeks I had been so busy with my business and hardly ever had time to think about Derek. However, he was the first person who came to mind when I looked at the diagnostic report. I missed him.

When I got home, I sat down in front of the computer desk and stared at the ultrasound. The blurry image of the two fetuses gave me mixed feelings.

I couldn’t sleep that night. I couldn’t help but wonder what Derek was doing now.

Would he miss me, would he be happy if he knew I was pregnant with twins?

But I didn’t dare call him on my phone or landline. It would reveal my whereabouts to him. So I called the family number through an Internet telephony program.

My heart skipped a beat when the phone connected.

I heard the deep, lovely voice that was familiar.

“Hello…” I covered my mouth to make sure I didn’t make a sound.

I said nothing and there was a moment of silence on the other end of the line.

Moments later, she spoke again.

“You must have the wrong number. But it doesn’t matter. I just want to talk to someone.” He sounded drunk.

When I thought about his stomach problem, my heart ached.

“Do you know how to raise a cat? I have a cat. My wife has named him ‘Rolling’ because he likes to roll around on the floor. She’s very smart, isn’t she? She loved the cat and used to take care of it. The cat had a good bond with my wife: it followed her everywhere. However, since my wife left, he’s been cornered. It doesn’t like me very much. What can I do? Do you think the cat misses my wife?”.

After a pause, he added, “Just like me.”

His words made my heart ache; tears welled up in my eyes. But I said nothing. Hearing his voice, I imagined what he would be doing at that moment. He must have been lying on the couch in the living room, holding the phone in one hand and stroking Rolling with the other.

Maybe he was surrounded by empty beer bottles. His neck reddened every time he drank. He habitually unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt, exposing his chiseled chest.

Derek always looked sexy and had an effortless charm about him.

“I always imagine that one day, when I would come home, I would be greeted by the delicious smell of food. Then, I would see her come out of the kitchen, wearing an apron, and she would smile shyly at me, like all the days of the past, as if nothing had changed. I wish this was all just a bad dream and I would wake up soon. But every day it seems to get worse. I miss her terribly, but I’m also afraid that I won’t be able to give her a stable life. If you have something, you are bound to lose something else. However, regardless of the uncertainty, you have to take the leap of faith, don’t you?”.

After a long pause, he said, “Sometimes I would hear a knock at the door at midnight. I would run downstairs, hoping that he had finally come back to me. But there was no one there. Had I lost my mind?”

I clamped my mouth shut as tears streamed down my face.
