Just as the tension was growing in the air, the maid called me.

Dexter was burning up and had to be sent to the hospital. After hanging up the phone, I gave Gifford a cold look.

“No matter what you say, Derek and I already have two children together.”

Hearing me mention children, Gifford laughed disdainfully. He looked as if he already knew of the children’s existence.

“Ah, the kids, huh? I’m not even sure if they’re really Derek’s or not,” he replied.

I wanted to reprimand him for his rude remark, but right now, my kids were more important and I didn’t want to waste my time with this fucking idiot who would never be satisfied with me.

“Do you have anything else to say? Hurry up. I’m very busy.”

Gifford stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray before pacing with his hands behind his back. Later, after Dexter’s infusion, his fever broke. I didn’t go to the company for two days and stayed home with my children.

I didn’t want to neglect my motherly duties just because of my career. And although I had two perfectly good nannies, they could never replace the motherly love I could provide. After that, I spent most of my time working at the administrative headquarters.

I had already consulted an architect to design a plan for the headquarters garden, and I was preparing to build a statue of Lavinia in an eye-catching position. Later, I opened my email and discovered that the sculpture company had sent me some sketches of their designs.

As I concentrated on looking at the sketches and chatting with the designer, I heard a knock at the door. “Please come in,” I said, staring at the computer screen.

Soon a cup of coffee was placed on the table for me. When I lifted my head, I saw Elaine Jarvis, the girl who had been late for the meeting that day.

I had since moved her to administrative headquarters. Today she wore her long hair braided, was lightly made up and dressed decently.

Noticing me looking her up and down, she gave me a meek smile.

“Miss Stone, thank you for giving me this opportunity. At the time I thought you didn’t want me and I regretted being late. And I was extremely surprised that you gave me an even better opportunity. I really appreciate it,” he said.

I smiled back and replied, “I guess the incident has stuck in your memory. So, I guess you’ll never be late again.” Elaine blushed and nodded gravely.

“Yes, ma’am! I’ve already set several alarms to make sure I wake up on time. I won’t be late again.” I appreciated her desire to do better and nodded with satisfaction.

“Elaine, your attitude toward work will determine everything. And I firmly believe you will do well here.”

With great confidence, Elaine replied, “I’ll do my best, Miss Stone!”. During my lunch break, I went to the cafeteria across the street from my company building and made a phone call.

After a while, Megan walked into the cafeteria, saw me at my table and immediately came over. She pushed aside the chair across from mine, sat down and cleared her throat.

“Shall I call you Eveline or do you prefer Miss Stone now?”.

I looked her in the eye and asked, “What do you think?”.

“Well, Miss Stone, what can I do for you?”. She smiled at me.

I rolled my eyes and said, “Watch your mouth.”

Megan stuck her tongue out at me and replied, “Do you think it’s still appropriate for me to call you ‘tutee’?” After taking a sip of coffee, I set the cup down.

“So, is that why you’ve been avoiding me lately?”.

As Megan held her coffee cup, she let out an awkward giggle. “If I grab your arm and annoy you like I used to, what will others think of me? They’ll think I’m sucking up to you or something.”

“So, to prove your innocence, you’ve decided to disassociate yourself from me?”. I asked.

Megan almost choked on her coffee and started coughing repeatedly. She looked around before whispering, “What are you talking about? People might think we have an embarrassing secret relationship. We have to be more careful, okay? Especially since I’m not married yet.”
