Chapter 469:

Tina and I sat in the back seat as she continued to sob incessantly.

“Eveline, I’m sorry I upset you,” she said between sobs.

I shook my head and smoothed back her disheveled hair.

“Don’t say that. Tina, I went to the place where you lived before to look for you as soon as I got back to Sousen. But the neighbors told me you were gone. Then I went to the day care center where you used to work before, but they told me you hadn’t worked there for a long time. Where do you live now?”

Tina lowered her head and hesitated for quite a while. She bit her lip and looked at me.

“I… I live in… Naosi.” I knew Naosi was in the suburbs of Sousen.

It was one of the most chaotic places in Sousen.

I asked Ady to give us a ride.

“Where’s Lily?” I asked along the way.

Tina pinched the corner of her clothes and took a deep breath.

“The neighbor has agreed to watch Lily for me. Her husband works construction and she’s a stay-at-home mom. I’ve asked her to help me take care of Lily for ten dollars a night. When I came home, Lily would be sleeping and I would take her back home.”

I couldn’t imagine the kind of life she was leading with her daughter. With the bag in hand, Tina eyed me warily.

“Eveline, can I change my clothes in the car?” I nodded.

“Go ahead.”

She took off her uniform, pulled a T-shirt and jeans out of the bag and put them on. Then he pulled out a small mirror and removed his makeup with the makeup remover.

The car stopped in Naosi and we got out. The roads were full of potholes and there was all kinds of garbage strewn everywhere. There was a garbage dump in the distance, and the putrid stench of garbage hung in the air. It was one of the most underdeveloped areas and almost all the houses had been built years ago.

The owners had moved to urban areas and rented their houses to the townspeople. Therefore, the area was home to a diverse population.

Tina moved us forward. There were no streetlights on this part of the street. The soft glow of the moon was the only source of light. As we turned into an alley, Tina slowed down and took my hand.

“Eveline, walking down this path is not easy. Be careful.” It was really risky to traverse this path. There were a lot of discarded bottles and garbage on the path.

We walked carefully so as not to get hurt. There were bungalows on both sides of the alleys. Some people were smoking in front of their houses.

A man, in his underwear, was taking a shower near the faucet. Tina advanced quickly with her head down, and I guessed that she faced such embarrassing situations regularly.

Our arrival attracted curious glances and whispers from the crowd. After a while, I heard the soft cry of a baby. Tina seemed to have heard it too, so she walked faster towards a house and knocked on the door. Moments later, the door opened and the baby’s cries grew louder.

“Tina, you’re back early today.” A woman’s voice came from inside.

“Yes. I didn’t have much work to do today, so I came back early,” Tina replied politely.

The woman handed Lily to Tina and smiled.

“Lily wanted to see you. She’s like this every day. It’s so hard to convince her to go to sleep.” Tina took Lily in her arms and kissed the little girl’s face.

“Good girl, mommy’s back. Don’t cry.”

Suddenly she remembered something and quickly pulled ten dollars out of her pocket and handed it to the woman.

“Thank you so much.”

“You’re welcome. We’re neighbors. It’s not easy for a young girl like you to raise a baby alone. I’ll do all I can to help you,” the woman says kindly, but doesn’t forget to take the money.
