Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 479
Chapter 479:
Becky’s broken voice echoed down the hallway.
“Derek, please help me…I haven’t received any offers for months. There are no opportunities for me anymore. To top it off, everyone ignores me at the company and even the newcomers bully me.”
I peeked through the gap in the blind in Derek’s office. Derek was sitting behind his desk, head down, concentrating on paperwork.
Becky was standing in front of his desk, whimpering. Despite her crying and wailing, Derek didn’t look up. I didn’t want to go into the office. I turned around and headed down the hall.
I sat down on a couch in the lounge area and waited. As soon as I sat down, the receptionist brought me a cup of coffee.
“Miss Stone, have some coffee,” she said kindly. I thanked her and took the cup.
After taking a sip, I pulled out my phone and decided to make a call. The call was answered almost immediately.
“I miss you, do you have time for us to have lunch together?”. I asked in a calm voice.
I could still hear Becky crying on the other end of the line. I couldn’t pretend I didn’t hear those cries. So I asked bluntly, “Who’s crying?”
Derek hesitated for a moment and finally said, “It’s Becky.”
I was so glad to see that he was being honest with me.
“Do you have time for us to have lunch together?”. I asked again.
“Of course. Just tell me where you are and I’ll pick you up,” Derek replied.
“No need. I’ll meet you in the lobby of your company.”
“Okay.” Then I hung up the phone and leaned back on the couch, quietly enjoying my coffee.
I also watched the elevator, which, I was sure, would be opening any minute. Sure enough, a few minutes later, the elevator doors opened. But it was Becky who stepped out of the elevator.
The doors closed behind her. She walked toward the entrance in a daze, her face bathed in tears.

At that moment, I remembered that Becky used to wear a mask when she went out for fear of being followed by the paparazzi. But that was no longer the case.
I had the feeling that she was even praying that those same paparazzi would follow her. She really needed it to get some attention. That might give a slight boost to her career, which was all but dead.
Becky was about to reach for the door when she suddenly saw me. She stopped immediately. She was no longer the regretful, miserable woman who had been in my office a few hours ago.
She was looking at me with hate-filled eyes. It was clear that she hated me with all her being. It was as if I was responsible for her current situation. We stood like that for a moment, looking into each other’s eyes.
Then, finally, he looked away and resumed walking towards the front door. I looked away, too, and started looking at the news on my cell phone. Suddenly, someone picked up the cup of coffee in front of me.
Before I could realize what was happening, I felt the coffee hit my face. The next moment, my hair was pulled forcefully.
“Bitch, what are you proud of, why are you so happy? Just know that the only woman Derek has ever loved is my sister, you’re nothing!” Becky was pulling my hair so hard I thought she was going to scalp me.
I wanted to defend myself, but since she was behind me, I couldn’t do anything.
Suddenly, a deep, aggressive voice echoed throughout the lobby.
“Let her go,” Derek roared.
I made a great effort to open my eyes, despite the coffee still dripping down my face. That’s when I saw Derek, furious, grabbing Becky by the arm.
Derek’s roar startled Becky, but she didn’t let go. A flash of sadness flashed through her eyes as she looked at Derek’s furious face.
The next moment, his gaze was fierce and murderous. It was as if he was going to risk everything.
“Guards!” shouted Derek in a deep voice.
In a split second, several security guards gathered there. They had no trouble controlling Becky and freeing me from my hair.
“Get off of me! Eveline! You bitch! You took Derek and now you decide to bully me, I curse you to hell!” Becky struggled to free herself from the guards’ grip.
She screamed and cursed so loudly that a large crowd gathered to watch. Derek ignored her completely. He crouched down in front of me and wiped my face with a handkerchief.
“Did you get burned?” he asked me softly.
I shook my head. I was very lucky because the coffee was no longer hot when Becky poured it on me.
However, my face, my clothes and even my phone were stained with coffee. The girl at the front desk found a woman’s suit jacket and handed it to Derek.
He took it and put it on me to cover the stains. Someone else brought wet towels and helped me clean my face and hair.
However, I was embarrassed to let someone other than Derek do it for me. So I thanked him and decided to clean my face myself. Although Becky had managed to ruin my morning, I had mostly made a fool of myself in front of everyone.
