Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 481
Chapter 481:.
When we walked out into the yard, we ran into James working out. Derek and I greeted him politely. James’ face lit up with a bright smile when he saw us.
“You’ve finally brought my two great-grandchildren,” he said.
When he had walked in, I noticed someone else in the orchard. He had his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows and was digging in the orchard with a hoe.
Hearing our voices, he straightened up and looked at us.
James smiled and said, “Aaron arrived last night. He’s been busy all morning helping me dig.”
I was a little embarrassed to face Aaron after what had happened at his old house.
James took Edith from me. “Come here. Let me take a look at my sweet great-grandson.”
I said with a smile, “Grandpa, this is Edith. She’s your great-granddaughter.” I pointed to the child in Derek’s arms and said, “This is Dexter. He’s your great-grandson.”
James laughed and played with Edith in his arms.
“I urged you to have one baby before, but now you have two. That’s fantastic.”
I could tell he was bursting with joy. However, I couldn’t help but notice that he didn’t seem to be in good health, as before. He looked fatigued and, after playing with Edith for a while, sweat was running down his forehead from the exertion.
I took my daughter away from him so he could sit down and rest. Aaron also came anxiously to check on James.
After sitting in a chair, the old man comforted us with a reassuring smile.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry. I am an old man. My body is not as good as it used to be,” he said in an optimistic tone. However, we all had worried faces.
After making sure she was okay, I handed Edith over to Derek and went to the kitchen to start cooking.
We did all the shopping ourselves. I knew James’ kitchen well and was a good cook. So I prepared the food with ease. The warm sound of chatter and laughter could be heard from outside the window.
The kids were having a great time too. As I chopped and prepared the ingredients, I couldn’t help but smile.
“Do you need help?” Suddenly I heard a voice behind me.

My nerves seemed to tense all at once. Without turning to look at the man, I said, “No, thank you. You can go out and spend some time with Grandpa. Lunch will be on the table soon.”
Despite my refusal, the man behind me didn’t move an inch. After a brief silence, the voice spoke again. “Eveline, I…”
Suddenly, something occurred to me. I turned and asked, “By the way, why didn’t Charlene come with you?”
Aaron put his hands in his pockets and slightly lowered his head. He probably didn’t expect me to ask him such a question.
Awkwardly and clearly embarrassed, he took his hands out of his pockets and walked over to the sink to wash my vegetables.
“He’s on a business trip now,” he replied.
“Oh!”, I said in acknowledgement and continued chopping the vegetables.
He took some and put them in a colander inside the sink. He turned on the faucet to rinse them. Water splashed the fresh green leaves.
He put his hands in the water and said slowly, “Eveline, you have run the Jolly Mayer Company so efficiently and profitably. I did not expect you to realize your dream so soon. I am sincerely very happy for your success.”
“Thank you,” she replied. “No matter what you choose to do, the most important thing is to live a happy and fulfilling life. The rich and powerful are not necessarily happy. Are you happy?” he asked.
I put the julienned vegetables on a platter and answered him with a question. “What about you, are you happy?”
“I’m not happy!” He was direct and completely sincere.
I was dumbfounded. Then he began to repeat his feelings.
“I am not happy with my current life. The medical school has invited me again to become a professor and this time I have accepted. Perhaps a simple work environment with an easy job would suit me better,” I said.
I smiled and said, “Excellent. You don’t need to be an angel in white, but you can cultivate countless angels.” He looked at me and we smiled at each other.
Sharing such a meaningful smile seemed to release all tension. After that exchange, we talked of nothing else.
He picked and washed vegetables; I chopped, prepared and cooked. The only noises were the splashing of the water, the sizzling of the oil, and the sound of the vegetables as they were added to the hot pan.
The aroma of delicious food wafted out of the kitchen and wafted everywhere.
