Chapter 483:

When Derek asked me to marry him, he told me that his grandfather only had two years left to live at most. And now, two years had passed since that day. When I thought about it, I started to worry.

Life could be so cruel sometimes. James was one of the kindest men I had ever had the pleasure of knowing. Someone like him should live a longer life.

Edith squirmed in my arms, and looked like she was about to cry. And just as I expected, she burst into tears moments later.

As soon as she cried, Dexter followed. The twins were practically in sync.

James looked at them with a fond smile. “It seems my two great-grandchildren are not happy with the news. Hahaha. Maybe I should set up a trust fund for the twins, and also something for Aaron’s future children. As for the rest of my estate, it will be donated.”

For me and Derek, raising our children would not be a problem. I wanted to decline the old man’s kind offer, but Derek spoke first.

“Thank you, Grandpa.”

Aaron concurred, “Thank you, Grandpa.”

I understood why they were in such agreement. It was Grandpa’s dying wish. So, if we accepted it willingly, it would make him very happy.

On the subject of the inheritance, James didn’t mention Gifford, let alone Lean. It seemed Belinda wasn’t happy either, but she had to contain her displeasure.

That day, Gifford and Belinda left without dinner. We, however, spent the night and left the next day.

I suggested that we take James to Sousen, so he could live with us. After all, he was not in good health. I was very worried about leaving him here alone. However, the old man insisted that he wanted to be alone and feel at peace.

Later, on the way back, Derek told me that he had long ago asked Grandpa to live with him, but the old man refused. He said that Grandpa preferred to live a quiet, idyllic life. Derek also said that the old man didn’t have much time left, so we should leave Grandpa alone, as long as he was happy.

As he dismissed us, James reached out from the other side of the window and touched my sons’ faces.

Even though he was smiling, I felt sad about that interaction and even felt like crying. When the car engine started, I stared out the window. James was wearing an old-fashioned white shirt.

Although he was old, his back was not hunched. He still looked pretty tough. But the way he didn’t move made me cry.

A few days later, Charlene came to my office. She wore her hair slightly curly and a beige dress that exposed her slender legs. It was the first time I had seen her since she caught Aaron drunk and losing control of himself that night.

Moments later, she took us to the beach. We strolled along the beach as the sea breeze blew gently. I felt the moist air on my skin. The wind stirred our hair and our skirts.

“Aaron told me you were on a business trip.” I came up with a topic to break the awkward silence.

“Yes! I actually went to the capital,” he said with a smile.

We continued walking along the waterfront for a while and soon sat down. I thought I should give him an explanation. After all, they were getting married. I didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable or resentful of me.

“Charlene, I know you must be very angry about what happened that night. But Aaron and I just…”

“You don’t have to explain yourself, Eveline. I know.” Charlene ran her fingers through her hair and brushed it back. She turned her gaze back to the open sea and said in a lighthearted tone, “Honestly, Eveline, I kind of hated you before. After you left Sousen so suddenly, I was happy. Somehow, I believed that in time Aaron would soon forget you. In fact, I used to be very tough and would never humiliate myself in front of almost anyone. But in front of Aaron, I have done everything I thought I would never do. But to my chagrin, he’s like a tenacious rock. And I’m tired, Eveline; really tired, I’ve done everything I could, but I can’t get him to see me. That’s why I’ve decided to give up.”
