Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 501
Chapter 501:.
Step by step, I helped Derek out of his father’s house.
The rain was starting to dissipate, but the ground was still wet from the heavy downpour earlier. I helped Derek into the car, called a driver, and returned home.
Then, I walked him back to the villa.
Upon seeing us, the nannies came to help me take him to the house. Once inside, they took him upstairs and laid him on his bed.
When I went upstairs, he had already fallen asleep. He had drunk so much that he must have given in to his drowsiness. I brought a basin of water into the room and wiped his hands and face with a towel so he could sleep more comfortably.
Then I went to check on my children. The nannies were playing with them. I was very proud to see that my children could already take a few steps holding on to the wall. Soon they would be able to walk on two legs.
From time to time, the children laughed. They seemed to be having a good time. As time went on, it became clear that the kids had Derek’s genes. They both seemed pleasing to the eye.
I sat off to the side, watching them play.
However, I felt uneasy. Even though the bad guys had been brought to justice, I still didn’t feel relaxed. On the contrary, I seemed to have fallen into another dilemma.
Derek and I had made a complete family, but we had hurt each other badly. I wondered if we could still go back to the way we used to be.
After returning to the bedroom, I lay down next to him in a wheelchair. For some reason, I couldn’t fall asleep. Right now, I was unable to distinguish right from wrong. Perhaps there was no clear distinction between the two in the first place. All I wanted now was a little peace of mind.
In the middle of the night, I heard Derek asking for water. So I went downstairs to get him a glass of water. When he drank some water, he sobered up a bit. He opened his eyes and stopped sleeping.
As I was about to get up, he hugged me.
“Honey, please don’t be mad at me for what happened. I don’t get to choose who my parents will be. Leave me alone.”
It was undeniable that Gifford blood ran through Derek’s veins, but today I was moved by his acts of righteousness. And to be honest, I could understand his pain. Somehow, I felt as if countless hands were pulling me from different directions.
I couldn’t understand what I was feeling right now. But I knew I felt conflicted.
I pulled away from his arms and said, “You should go to sleep.”
He let go of me and stared at the ceiling. He seemed to have sobered up.
For the next few days, we both focused on working at our respective companies. And whenever I was busy, I no longer had any extra energy to think about other things.
One day, on my way to work, I inadvertently looked out the window. That’s when I saw something unexpected. I thought I saw a familiar person.
Seeing the man walking toward a roadside toy store, I told Ady to stop the car.
But I didn’t get out of the car. I sat patiently inside the car, waiting for the man to come out.
About ten minutes later, he came out with a bunch of toys in his hands. He didn’t call a cab. He just walked down the street. So I decided to get out of the car and tell Ady to go on without me.
I followed the man, making sure I was about ten yards away from him. After walking for almost half an hour, we had left the bustling urban area.
Finally, he entered an orphanage. I approached the door of the orphanage and saw a group of children surrounding him. They all seemed delighted to see him. One by one, he gave them their gifts. They were ecstatic when they received their respective toys.
Cheering and jumping around them, they said in unison, “Thank you!”.
That’s when I decided to go in and greet him from behind. “Mr. Larson.”
The man froze and slowly turned around. When he saw me, a smile appeared on his aged face.
It had been almost two years since I had last seen him. In just two years, he seemed to have aged a lot. He had wrinkles on his face and gray in his hair. He wore simple clothes and walked staggeringly. He was no longer the head of a large company.
At the time, he looked to me like any old man.
