Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 506
Chapter 506:.
Derek and I didn’t talk much after we got home from jail.
After dinner, I went back to my room with Edith in my arms. Edith had been sleeping with us the last few days. Perhaps Dexter felt it was unfair for her to come to our room with the maid and insisted on sleeping with us as well. I had no choice but to bring Dexter to our room and have the two children sleep together.
It took me a long time to convince them to go to sleep. Moments later, the door opened and I instinctively closed my eyes, pretending to fall asleep. The soft footsteps grew louder as Derek gently closed the door and went to bed.
I didn’t know when I fell asleep, but it took me a long time to fall asleep as countless thoughts swirled in my mind.
When I woke up in the middle of the night, Derek was not in bed. The room was dark and the curtains were gently swaying in the wind.
I heard a clicking sound on the balcony, like a cigarette lighter. I got out of bed, put on my slippers and went out onto the balcony.
It was late in the afternoon. Derek was sitting on the balcony, smoking. The place looked dark, except for the fire on the end of his cigarette.
He took a puff on the cigarette and blew out smoke rings. He always had the feeling that something was bothering him, as if an invisible net had caught him and a mountain of weight was weighing him down.
“What does the cigarette taste like?” I asked, approaching him.
He looked at me and looked back down at the cigarette in his hand. “Do you want to try it?” His eyebrows rose as he examined my face.
Derek had a strange charm when he smoked; it always turned me on.
“Yes.” I nodded.
He looked puzzled for a moment before a slow smile tugged at his lips. He pulled a cigarette out of the cigarette case, lit it and handed it to me.
I felt awkward taking it. I pinched the cigarette between my fingers and gently brought it to my mouth as he had done.

Taking a puff, the smoke went straight down my throat, leaving a burning trail in its wake.
I choked and coughed as tears welled up in my eyes. Derek stood up and patted me on the back, laughing.
I was so embarrassed that I stuck out my tongue to relieve the burning sensation. When I finally calmed down, I handed the cigarette back to him.
“It doesn’t taste good, why are you so addicted to it?”. Derek took my cigarette and sat back in his chair.
“Well, smoking doesn’t always have to do with cigarettes.”
“It has to do with mood,” I added.
He smiled and put the cigarette in his mouth. After a moment of silence, he took a puff and stared up at the night sky.
“It’s like falling in love with someone. Sometimes people don’t know why they’re in love with their partner or what’s good about it. It’s a strong emotional pull that people can’t shake off.”
I looked at him; the moonlight seemed to soften his features and he looked more handsome than ever.
“Are you talking about me?” he looked back at me and arched an eyebrow.
“What do you think?”
What was he thinking? I had never been able to decipher what was going through his complicated mind.
After smoking, he stood up and shook my hand. “Let’s go back to the room.”
We went back to the room and lay down on the bed. I could still smell the tobacco on his breath, even though the two children were sleeping in the bed between us.
I had just tried tobacco and hated the smell and taste of cigarettes. However, the smell of tobacco in his mouth seemed to excite me.
The next day, at dawn, I was awakened by the sound of soft music. Derek was no longer in bed. I got up, opened the door and went downstairs.
When I got to the living room, the clear glass door to the living room was open. I saw a tall figure in a white shirt standing on the patio with a guitar in his hands.
I once had a dream that Derek was sitting on the patio, singing, while strumming his guitar.
My heart skipped a beat as I watched the dream unfold. I pinched my thigh. It ached. I wasn’t dreaming. Morning light flooded his body. He looked ethereal as he played the guitar. I left the room walking towards him as tears welled up in my eyes.
