Chapter 513:.

I was absolutely stumped. “An ending? What do you mean?”

He sat up straight and rested his hands on the table. He looked at me more gravely than before and stated aloud one deliberate word at a time.

“It’s over!” In my mind I seemed to hear an ominous thunderclap.

I was dumbfounded and stared at him with an absent expression. My voice was so light and meek that I couldn’t even hear myself.

“Why?” he pursed his lips and looked away as if he was thinking about something. After a long while, he finally opened his mouth. “Does it matter if there’s a reason or not? Our relationship starts without a reason, and there is no reason when it ends.”

His nonchalant attitude made my nose twitch involuntarily. I couldn’t believe what he had just said. He had been so kind to me.

His kindness gave me strength to overcome obstacles and made me surrender to happiness. He had told me he owed me a wedding.

How could I believe he would change his mind so quickly?

“Don’t make fun of me. It’s not funny,” I told him.

I didn’t dare look into his eyes because his were so serious at that moment that they made me feel nervous.

“Eveline, I’m very serious. Tomorrow we will see our lawyers to finalize the divorce,” he told me matter-of-factly.

I could clearly see that he was serious. He didn’t seem to be joking in the least. My distress was so intense that I almost felt my heart physically break and shatter in my rib cage.

“But why? We’ve been through so much. It’s not easy for us to start a quiet life after this. I don’t want this to end between us,” I said imploringly.

I didn’t mind being humble before him. At this moment, there was only one thought in my mind: I didn’t want to end it. I couldn’t break up with him. I wanted to live with him for the rest of my days.

“Do you really care about what Ruth said that day? In fact, you don’t have to care about that. Ruth and I…” I began.

“No.” She interrupted me with frigid ruthlessness. “It’s nobody else’s business. This is between you and me.” He spoke slowly, as if he feared I couldn’t hear him or understand him clearly.

Before I came here or saw the set-up of the room, I was filled with anticipation. I had expected him to propose to me, as he had told me he owed me. But what I heard now disheartened and disappointed me.

I grabbed the wine from the table and poured myself a glass with some urgency. As my hands were shaking uncontrollably, abundant wine spilled from the glass. After drinking a glass of wine, I could feel the pungent buzz in my throat, but it did not suppress the pain in my heart.

“Is there something wrong between us?” I asked in anguish. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it. The smoke quickly clouded my vision and I couldn’t see his expression clearly.

“There were barriers between us, more specifically, between your father and mine.” Hearing his heavy voice, my eyes began to fill with tears.

“But that’s not your fault or mine, is it?”.

“I know, but it weighs on my conscience,” he said grimly.

My heart ached. I still couldn’t bring myself to accept that this was the end of the road for our relationship.

“Who said he only had me now? Who asked me never to leave him? Who said we’d go on a trip together next year? Who said he owed me a wedding?”

My questions made him frown. He poured himself another glass of wine and downed it in one gulp. Then he set the glass down with a loud clink.

“Last year you were gone for over half a year, but you said the children were mine. Eveline, do you think that’s a believable story?”.

I stared at him in total disbelief and all the color drained from my face in an instant.

“What…what did you just say?” My voice was shaking.

He took a puff on his cigarette and said, “I said let’s get a divorce.”
