Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 70
Chapter 70:
Once he had left, I went back to my workplace, and was absent for the rest of the afternoon.
I didn’t wait for him to pick me up after work. Instead, I rode the bus home.
When I re-entered the villa, I no longer had a sense of belonging, nor did I feel like the hostess of the house. In fact, I felt like an outsider who shouldn’t have been here in the first place.
But if I left without saying anything, it would seem too unreasonable. So, still, I prepared a meal and sat in a chair on the balcony, looking off into the distance with Feo in my arms.
When the front door opened, it was already dark. There was no light around, so Derek had to circle around before he found me on the balcony. “Why are you here?” He reached out to stroke my hair.
“It’s a little warm inside the room, so I stayed here to cool off for a while. The food may have cooled down by now. Go warm it up,” I said.
“Have you eaten yet?” she asked.
“Yes, I have eaten.”
The truth was that I hadn’t eaten yet. The reason I lied was because I was afraid he would urge me to eat. I was so afraid that I wouldn’t be able to resist how much he cared about me, and that I would fall deeper into his tenderness trap.
Suddenly, he came over and sat on my lap. It was so heavy that my legs felt numb.
He lifted my chin with one hand and stared into my eyes.
“What’s the matter with you? You looked so depressed during the morning, are you feeling bad?”
Seeing that I didn’t respond, he pressed his forehead against mine. I leaned back, but he held me in his arms, preventing me from moving.
“Or maybe… Are you really pregnant?” he said nonchalantly, a mischievous grin on his face.
“What if I am?” I stared at him, not wanting to miss the subtle changes in his face. After looking at me for a while, he pinched my cheek, as if chastising me.
“You’re not sure? I told you in Qinben that if you want to take birth control pills, it’s up to you. But once you get pregnant, you must not have an abortion. I will take responsibility for the child.”
“How?” I asked, wanting more answers.

Suddenly, he leaned over me, leaving me no choice but to lean my back against the chair.
As he pinched my chin, he said, “If you are pregnant, that means I am the father of the child. What else could I do but fulfill my paternal duties? What’s wrong with you today? You’ve only worked two days, but you seem to have used up all your IQ.”
He was trying to keep the conversation light, but I was in no mood for jokes.
She didn’t seem to feel guilty when I mentioned pregnancy and responsibility. It made me wonder if he had nothing to hide, or was just good at acting.
I soon noticed the breathing next to my ear getting heavier. Not a moment passed and he slowly slipped his hand into my clothes.
I grabbed his hand, turned my head and avoided his kiss.
“I’m too tired.”
Fortunately, he didn’t insist on sex. In the end, he just planted a kiss on my forehead.
“In that case, you should go to sleep.”
So, I went to bed without dinner. Actually, I didn’t fall asleep right away. The image of Derek with that pregnant woman kept going through my mind. I wondered if it was the truth. In the end, I decided I had to replace out the answer for myself.
I had no idea when Derek had gone to sleep. Perhaps because of my refusal to have sex earlier, he didn’t come into my room.
The next day, he still drove me to work and I didn’t refuse.
He stopped the car at the same place as yesterday. The moment I got out of the car, he suddenly called my name. “Eveline.”
Whenever he was in a good mood these past few days, he always called me “sweetheart”. But when I saw her calling my name, I deduced that she was serious.
When I turned around, I found him looking at me sternly. “If you’re still uncomfortable, you should get a checkup. And if you really are pregnant, you shouldn’t go back to work. I don’t want my wife to work her fingers to the bone, and I’d rather my child not suffer alongside you.” These kind words left an impact on my psyche, but I soon calmed down.
“I would know whether I am pregnant or not.”
After closing the car door, I headed towards the hospital with hurried steps. Once inside, I quickly turned around and made sure his car had turned around. I then hailed a cab and told the driver to follow Derek’s car.
I did not impulsively follow him. In fact, I decided on this plan after a whole night of contemplation.
I wasn’t very good at acting, nor did I want to commit. So, I decided it was best to replace out the truth.
After a while, the cab pulled up as Derek’s car pulled into the subway parking lot of a building.
I got out of the cab and took a look around. The building was nothing short of magnificent. Near the top of the building, the words “Dere International” were written. It was office hours, so there were a lot of people coming in and out of it.
I still had no idea what Derek did for a living. After living with him for so long, I still didn’t have the courage to ask him. Somehow, I thought that if I asked him, he might think I was after his money. Besides, he had never told me about his work.
That made me wonder if he worked for Dere International.
