Chapter 77:.

Suddenly, my phone rang. Louise was calling me. She told me she wanted to buy a house, and was asking me to come with her to see the house,

Derek must have understood what we were talking about from the context of my responses to Louise. So, he said, “You can go now. I’ll call you later, honey.”

On my way out, I called for a cab to go to the building Louise had told me about.

There I found her waiting for me at the entrance.

Today she was wearing a loose white T-shirt and black leather shorts. The brown sunglasses she was wearing were very stylish.

“Why do you suddenly want to buy a house?” I asked her.

He took me by the arm, led me inside and said, “Remember how I got in a fight with that bitch?”

“Does your father know yet?”

Louise scoffed, “That woman is more cunning than we give her credit for. She went to my father and admitted the truth before I could tell her anything. She also said she was just impulsive and that her heart never betrayed him. My father can’t live without her, so he forgave her when she admitted her mistake to him while crying all the time.”

Even I, as an outsider, was surprised by this. “Your father is open-minded. That’s all I can say.”

“That’s why I want to buy a house. I’d rather not live with them anymore. It bothers me to see them together.”

As I listened to the realtor’s sales pitch, Louise asked me,

“Why did you turn off your phone yesterday? I called you, but I couldn’t reach you.”

Since she asked me that, I figured it was time to tell her what had happened to me over the past two days. After hearing my story, he smacked me on the forehead.

“Eve, what’s wrong with your brain? Why didn’t you talk to him and clear things up beforehand? You even harassed him without giving him a chance to explain himself? That matter could have been settled with a simple conversation. Why did you have to get so complicated and end up making yourself sad? Besides, do you think Derek is that kind of person? Personally, I don’t. You probably know him better than I do, so why are you so distrustful of him?”

Maybe Louise was right. It could have been fixed with a simple conversation. But when it happened, I didn’t have the courage to ask her face to face.

Later, Derek called me and asked me to take a cab home by myself, because he still had some social activities to take care of.

Louise took a look at several buildings, but didn’t see any houses she liked. After looking for a couple of hours, she told me she had something else to do, so she left first. I caught a bus and saw a wedding car drive by. It reminded me of something, so I picked up the phone and looked at the calendar.

It was already August 10. Shane’s wedding was going to take place in five days.

I thought the next time I would see him again would be as a groom in an impeccable suit, but I didn’t think I would run into him the day before his wedding.

That noon, I didn’t want to have lunch at the hospital cafeteria, so I went out for a bowl of noodles. So, I went to a nearby restaurant and sat down. Soon after, I realized that the person sitting across from my table was Shane.

It was a dramatic twist of fate.

Shane was also eating noodles. When he raised his head and saw me, he was a little stunned, but continued eating his food. He didn’t speak to me until he was finished.

“What’s the matter, didn’t your husband take you out to eat at a fancy restaurant?” I didn’t expect him to tease me as a form of greeting. So I decided to respond with a taunt to him as well.

I realized that I ate the cheapest noodles in this restaurant. I didn’t even have a single piece of meat. “Dr. Hayes, you are about to be a groom tomorrow, how can you eat so poorly the day before your wedding?” perhaps not knowing how to respond, he decided not to.

Truth be told, he understood why she saved money whenever she could. Vivien was wasteful with money and Shane couldn’t discipline her. Therefore, her only option was to control her own spending.

But no matter how hard she tried to save, the cost of the wedding reception was something she had to splurge on. Catering, cigarettes and wine, the wedding ceremony itself and all the other miscellaneous expenses were fixed.

Shane looked haggard at this point. I supposed he must be under a lot of stress.

He had no idea that something big was about to happen at his wedding.

As we continued to eat our own noodles, we didn’t communicate more than the first few sarcastic greetings. We were more like strangers who didn’t know each other.

As I looked at the money she put under her bowl when she left, I really thought we would never see each other again. But it seemed that fate was not yet done with us. We were destined to meet again, and that was something neither of us could avoid.
