Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 86
Chapter 86:.
After accompanying Tina to her prenatal checkup, I escorted her out of the hospital and went to work.
During work time, I heard my colleagues gossiping again about Virtue Hospital. They were saying that Shane and Vivien had divorced and that he had been fired from Virtue Hospital. I wasn’t sure if this news was true or not.
Although I learned that Vivien did indeed want to divorce Shane, I thought maybe she was just saying it out of anger. Marriage wasn’t a game-how could she divorce him so easily?
But considering what happened at the wedding, it surely humiliated her and her father. She had no idea what Leroy would do after that humiliation.
If they really had fired Shane, it meant that all his efforts over the years had been fruitless. Even though he had finished medical school and already had a few years of experience, this situation meant he had to start over if he wanted to work somewhere else.
Unexpectedly, I ran into him when I went to the human resources department to hand in some paperwork.
He was dressed formally and had a resume in his hand. It was easy to guess that he was here applying for a job. It turned out that the news that I had been laid off was true.
As soon as he saw me, I got a little scared. I went into the office and handed over the documents. Afterwards, when I came out, I didn’t even bother to take a look at it.
Although I tried my best to be passive in this matter, given his current situation, I must have felt like I was mocking him inside my head.
I hadn’t even walked that far when I suddenly heard my name being called from behind me.
“Eveline!”
I turned and saw Shane right behind me.
“Do you think I deserve what’s happened to me now?” a bitter smile was imprinted on his face.
The truth was, he thought he deserved this karma.
“Do you really think I set you up? If that’s what you believe, then there’s nothing I can do about it. Believe what you want to believe. I don’t care.”

I turned around, ready to leave. But then, she said, “I know it wasn’t you.
Derek did it.”
Once again, I gave him a look, this time with a stern look. “Vivien fell off the stage by accident. He didn’t tie a rope to her leg or something.”
Shane laughed. “Right. It was divine punishment, wasn’t it?”
I thought he was saying that because he now realized how cruel and merciless he’d been in the past.
“It was his way of getting back at me,” he added. I should have turned around and gone about my day; but for some reason, my feet weren’t moving.
Shane must have realized that I wanted to hear more about this story, so a wicked grin appeared on his lips.
As much as I wanted to know the whole truth, it also scared me. Because I could see in Shane’s eyes that he also wanted revenge on Derek.
After a few seconds of hesitation, I was overcome with the desire to escape the situation.
So, I turned around decisively, walking as fast as I could to run away.
Even if there was another truth behind this affair, I preferred to fool myself and live in the sweet dream Derek had gifted me with.
“I slept with his wife in the past, Eveline. That’s why he also wants to do the same. It’s his revenge.”
Shane’s voice wasn’t that loud, but I could hear it as if it was right next to my ear. The way he said it made it sound like he was sure they were true. He probably thought I would be interested in hearing more, and even thought that statement was enough to shatter the beautiful dream Derek had gifted me with.
Soon, I found that I had stopped in my tracks.
Slowly, I turned and saw Shane’s triumphant smile. It was as if he thought he had evened the odds.
“Shane, if you’re having a hard time right now, don’t drag people down with you. Do you enjoy watching others suffer or something? Do you honestly think your words are enough to ruin my relationship with Derek? You’ve always had bad intentions, Shane. Ask yourself this, will Eveline believe me?”.
My manner of speaking was calm and composed. I did my best to let it be known that I didn’t believe a word she said. I was the only one who knew that her revelation had shaken me.
Shane seemed to have seen right through me, because I saw the smile on his face widen.
“Do you know who his wife was?” he asked again.
As much as it pained me to admit it, Shane knew my mind well.
I stared at him in silence. On the surface, I was vigilant and had my guard up, but my heart was fluttering and aching.
By the time he asked that question, I already had a name in mind, and I just hoped he would confirm my suspicion.
“His wife was Sybil.”
Indeed, it was she….
The truth was like a sharp dagger repeatedly stabbing into my heart. I could barely hear Shane’s voice at the time.
“Back then, he broke two of my ribs. That should have left a lasting impression of him in my mind, but after eight years, he changed quite a bit. Honestly, I didn’t recognize him when I first saw him. But when I realized who he was, I knew his plan for revenge would come sooner or later.”
“Enough!” I expressed.
“I have to get back to work. I don’t have time to listen to your bullshit, Shane.” With that said, I turned and hurried away.
