Chapter 90:

“Wait!”

I recognized the voice as Aaron’s, so I stopped running and wiped the tears from my face. Then, I gave him a look with slightly reddened eyes.

“What are you doing here?”

He ran toward me with his suit jacket in his hand, catching his breath.

“My girlfriend is upset. It’s only natural to comfort her,” he joked.

I looked behind him and realized Derek wasn’t there.

I didn’t want to admit it, but the disappointment showed on my face.

“It’s been a long time since you’ve seen your cousin and your friends. You should stay with them and bond with Derek some more.” Aaron shook his head and stuck one of his hands in his pocket.

“Honestly, I don’t feel very comfortable in a noisy place. Besides, I just got back.

I have plenty of time to bond with him.”

I turned around and started walking like a living corpse.

“Where are you going?” asked Aaron.

“For a walk,” I replied tersely.

“Sure.” After saying that, he followed me down the path.

“Are you hungry?” he asked suddenly when we had walked for a while.

I gave him a look and he smiled uncomfortably at me. “Well, I am hungry. I came to the bar right off the plane. I haven’t had dinner yet. Would you mind having dinner with me?” he asked.

I didn’t refuse his offer. Only I knew the reason I had agreed to have dinner with him.

He asked me what I wanted to eat, but right now I had no appetite.

When I saw a food stand across the street, I merely pointed it out.

Derek had told me that his cousin had gotten his medical degree overseas and was a great cook. I figured he must be picky about food, so I thought he would hate the idea of eating at food stalls. But, to my surprise, he agreed without hesitation.

We soon found a place to sit down. He put aside his suit jacket, slowly rolled up his sleeves and smiled at me. “It’s been a while since I’ve been back. I really miss the food in my hometown. You know, I think about how delicious the food is here all the time.”

The food was a little spicy, so the tip of his nose was sweating. Embarrassed, he wiped it with a handkerchief and unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt.

“Honestly, it’s been a long time since I’ve eaten spicy food last time. I’m a little afraid of them now. In fact, before I went abroad, I used to love spicy food.

They were my favorite.

I noticed how slender her fingers were, so everything she did gave her an elegant and refined look.

The food stand was not as quiet as a high-end restaurant, and some of the other patrons lacked education. The people at the next table were drinking and chatting as if no one else was there.

I stared at the beer bottles they were putting on the floor one after another, and suddenly I said to Aaron, “I want to drink beer.”

He was puzzled at my suggestion, but nodded anyway.

“Oh? Sounds great. My treat, then.”

He called the bartender over and ordered several cans of beer.

I opened a can and drank more than half of it before putting it down.

As he spooned some food into my bowl, he said, “It’s easier to get drunk on an empty stomach. You should eat something first.

I didn’t respond to her comment. Honestly, I just wanted to get drunk. Once I was drunk, I wouldn’t have to think about anything, and I wouldn’t feel so damn sad.

“Do you know who Sybil is?” I asked.

Aaron seemed surprised by my question. He put down his fork and smiled wryly. “I know her very well.”

Hearing him say that, I immediately stared at him, hoping to learn more about Sybil from him.

He seemed to understand what I wanted, so he leaned back in his chair, pulled a cigarette from his pack and lit it.

“Can you tell me about Sybil and Derek?” I asked, still maintaining eye contact. His smoking was a little different than Derek’s. Aaron seemed not to be a regular smoker, and he smoked very elegantly.

Derek, on the other hand, tended to take deep puffs and exhale thick clouds of smoke. When he did so, he gave an especially manly and cool appearance.

“Well, what do you want to know?” asked Aaron.

He wanted to know a lot of things about them. Maybe everything pertinent, even. In fact, Derek had always been a mystery to me. “Derek used to be the lead singer of Thorn Birds, didn’t he?” I asked.

Aaron nodded his head. “Yeah.”

“Um… Were you guys in love?” I could feel my heart tremble as I asked the question.

“Back then, I could tell Derek loved her very much.”

As simple as that sentence was, it was enough to shatter my heart. It was so painful I could barely breathe.

Just then, my phone started ringing. It was Louise’s. Somehow, I was disappointed to see her name instead of the one I expected her to call me.

She asked me where I was, but I didn’t tell her the truth. I just told her I was fine and that she didn’t have to worry about me.

After I hung up on Louise, I stared at the phone blankly.

Since I had run out of the bar, Derek hadn’t called me. I wondered if he was still figuring out how to explain his side to me. Or maybe he was still playing games because he didn’t care.

“What about Sybil, did she love him?”

Even though I knew it would break my heart to hear the truth, I still wanted to know the answer .
