Basket of Cupcakes -
The Inbetween
Kiki and group seemed to be suspended in space. Stars began to come into focus around them, then the smokey mist that surrounded their navy blue surrounding started to swirl into life. They were still frozen with only the movement of their eyes allowed.
It looked as though they were transported into deep space. Bit by bit, more of their alien surrounding came into focus. First, a faint appearance of a ground that became more clear little by little. The lush grass could be felt under their feet. Then the sky started to brighten up and as the stars lightened, the sun brightened. Birds could be heard. Waterfalls bubbled and colour sprang up all around them. As soon as their surrounding solidified, they unfroze, falling over one another like a pile of washing.
Victoria was the first to break the silence with a screeching howl of horror.
“Where are we? Ben, what did you put in those shots? Am I high?”
While Ben suddenly felt the effects of his boozing wearing off, and Claire cried into Ethan’s sleeve. Kiki and Yori took in their new surrounding. It was breathtaking. Mountains floated high in the sky with waterfalls falling into bursts of cloudy mist.
Trees of every colour imaginable dotted the landscape, with birds as large as dogs, glittering in flight. All this made home seem black and white.
Soon everyone else started to take notice, beginning with a very cool “Whoa!” from Ethan.
“Hold on, did the kids also have the shots, Ben! How are they in my hallucination?” Victoria said thru smudgy eyes. She walked over to Claire and pinched her. Claire’s scream made Victoria topple over with a yelp.
Kiki rolled her eyes. “Why the hell are they here as well?” She whispered to Yori.
Before he could answer, Kiki caught something shuffle in the grass. She turns in its direction and the movement stopped. A blade of grass still moved. She crept closer to see what it was. As she got closer, she saw a bunch of cupcakes lying in the grass.
How odd, she thought, who would leave cakes just lying there? Oh well, she said and turned away. Just as she did, she caught another movement and turn around in a quick motion, not to miss the little spy. Again there was stillness. But the cakes had moved.
She walked over to a rainbow one, sprinkled with shiny dust. She tried to pick it up but as soon as she did, it sprouted legs and ran as fast as it could away from her.
“What the!” Kiki cried. Soon a whole bunch of cupcakes grew legs and were scampering away. They all hoped into a basket lying under a very purple tree.
Kiki peered in and noticed they were all huddled together, shivering and whimpering.
Just then Yori popped up above her shoulder.
“Aha! You’ve found the cuppies.”
On hearing Yori’s voice the cupcakes looked up with the ginormous eyes.
“Yori! It’s you!” They all jumped about in excitement, then noticed the little girl again and started backing off.
“This here hooman was sent for guys.
No need for panic. Came to replace her mum’s she has.”
