Chapter 248 Trampled Hearts

Benson couldn’t sleep at all throughout the long night.

He lay on the bed, fully dressed, staring at the ceiling as memories from recent days replayed in his mind.

The night enveloped the room, and while the city outside was still brightly lit, his heart was submerged in an ocean of memories and pain.

He clearly remembered something Yvonne had once said to him: “The starting point doesn’t matter; what matters is the action itself.”

These words cut into his heart like a sharp blade, forcing him to confront the behaviors and decisions he had tried so hard to forget.

Since they got married, he had never treated her well.

He recalled the countless times he was cold, distant, and even humiliating towards her.

If it weren’t for that “accidental” drugging incident at the old house, he knew they would have likely

divorced smoothly, without the later complications.

Back then, he was so cruel and heartless toward her.

He didn’t even want to think about those times, as if It had all been a mistake in his life.

However when Steven pointed out at the club that the person he had been searching for was Yvonne, a flood of unwanted memories rushed back into his

mind.

He remembered forcing her onto the coffee table, pressing her down and humiliating her.

He couldn’t even bear to recall what he had done to

her at St. George’s.

That time felt like a nightmare, and he was the merciless perpetrator.

When he realized that Yvonne was the person he had been searching for all along, a wave of joy surged through him.

But that joy was quickly replaced by a deeper pain.

He knew, even though he had finally found her, that it was too late for them.

Back then, he knew he was wrong but used the trivial matter of Olivia to claim the moral high

ground

He refused to admit his mistakes, refused to acknowledge his feelings, and refused to let her go.

He held himself back, not seeking her out, as if he was waiting not for her confession, but for an

opportunity.

But in this marriage, he had already made mistake after mistake, with no room for redemption.

He knew that John was his father’s lifesaver, yet because of his resentment, he treated Yvonne so cruelly.

His hatred and desire for revenge not only hurt her but also made him colder and more unfeeling.

Yvonne was right–he had never shown her any warmth, never favored her in the slightest.

Even in the most intimate of moments, he couldn’t distinguish how many times it was out of genuine love and how many times it was merely out of desire.

He remembered those nights when her body trembled slightly in his arms, but he never truly understood her heart.

Most of the time, his desires were triggered by some sudden discovery of a new trait in her, something trivial and selfish compared to her feelings.

Matthew once told him that those who trample on true hearts will eventually face retribution.

He thought that falling in love with Yvonne was his

retribution.

But if he had known how deeply he would fall for her, he never would have treated her that way.

He now realized that if he had sincerely treated her

with kindness and care, their outcome might have

been entirely different.

His heart was tormented by endless regret and self- reproach, as if the weight of the world was pressing down on his chest, making it hard for him to breathe.

He finally understood that true love was never about simple possession and control, but about treating someone with sincerity and nurturing them with

genuine care.

If he could start over, he would hold her in the palm

of his hand.

He would give her all the warmth and love she deserved, Instead of leaving her to endure the pain alone

As he reflected on everything that had happened recently, his heart couldn’t replace peace.

He knew he had made mistakes, one after another, mistakes that couldn’t be undone.

He had loved her, still loved her, but that love had only brought her endless suffering.

He couldn’t help but question himself -why had it come to this? Why had the love he gave her turned

into torment?

“Who could have imagined?” he muttered to himself, his voice barely audible. “The one I’ve been fixated on, the one I’ve always longed for, was the same person I humiliated not once, but repeatedly…”

He slowly closed his eyes, the pain on his face deepening.

He had never been so acutely aware of what he had

done to her.

He loved her, truly loved her, deeply and hopelessly.

But it was precisely because of this profound love that he couldn’t bear to recall, couldn’t face it all.

He couldn’t even admit that his love had caused her so much pain.

If the love you receive only brings you pain, would you still want it?

Outside, the sky gradually brightened as the night’s darkness was slowly torn away by the morning light. The room filled with the warmth of the dawn.

Benson lay on his side, staring blankly at the sunlight streaming in through the window, letting it slowly seep in and dispel the night’s chill.

He kept watching, kept watching until his eyes stung with fatigue, but he didn’t notice.

His heart was still trapped in a deep mire, unable to replace a way out.

He knew he didn’t want a divorce.

He had finally found the person he had been

searching for all along, the one who had haunted his dreams.

Even before he found her, he had chosen her.

He couldn’t bear to let her go, couldn’t bear to end this marriage, no matter how broken it was

Voices from the courtyard broke the silence in the

room.

“Aunt Yvonne, are you ready?” It was little Emma’s

voice.

Benson finally got out of bed, dragging his exhausted body to the window.

He looked down through the window and saw Yvonne in sportswear.

Her long hair was tied in a ponytail, and she was chatting in the courtyard with his mother and little.

Emma.

“She really is a ‘treasure,” he murmured to himself.

He watched her with a complex gaze, a wave of bittersweet emotions surging in his heart.

He felt that despite the time they had spent together, there were still so many things about her that he didn’t understand.

The sunlight fell on her long hair, giving her strands a faint purple hue.

As the breeze gently blew, her hair swayed, like flames dancing in the light.

She was still as beautiful as ever, still the most beautiful person in his heart.

Benson’s thoughts drifted back to the past, to the time when he first saw her.

That year, at the entrance of the Taylor Group headquarters, she stood not far away, staring at him intently.

Even though he only glanced at her briefly in his busy schedule, her image was deeply imprinted in

his mind.

She was truly beautiful, her eyes clear, her aura pure, as if untouched by the dust of the world.

“George said she was like a fairy, with that ethereal look, as if she didn’t belong to this world.”

And it was from that one glance that he assumed

she had fallen for him.

Back then, he naturally despised her, distanced himself from her, thinking she married him only because of her father’s favor.

But he really didn’t know that she was just… herself.

His gaze darkened, and endless doubts and self- reproach arose in his heart.

Why had things turned out this way between him and her?

They could have had a better ending; they once had a chance to be happy together.

But now, everything seemed so far out of reach.

Why had things turned out this way between him and her?
