Chapter 268: Lost and Reflecting
Benson arrived at the club early in the morning, unusually opening a bottle of alcohol. He sat in the corner, his face dark and gloomy, downing one glass after another.
Noticing something was off, the club manager quickly called Matthew. Feeling uneasy after receiving the call, Matthew rushed over from his
company and called William to join him on the way.
When the two arrived at the club in a hurry, the manager approached them
with a concerned look.
In a low voice, he said, “He’s already had two large glasses of strong liquor on an empty stomach. He’s not in a good state.”
Matthew frowned upon hearing this, pushed open the club door, and
headed straight for Benson.
Benson was half–leaning on the sofa, holding a glass, his face stern, his brows furrowed, with a cold and fierce look in his eyes.
Seeing him like this, Matthew’s heart sank. He reached out and snatched the glass from Benson’s hand.
“Have you forgotten that you were just in the hospital a few days ago?” His
tone was a mix of blame and concern.
Benson didn’t resist; he simply looked at Matthew coldly, his eyes filled with a strange mix of anger and despair.
William glanced at the half–empty bottle on the table and frowned.”
Drinking early in the morning? This is really unusual. You should stop; it’s bad for your health. I’m telling you, if you ruin yourself, Yvonne won’t want you.”
This comment seemed to pierce Benson’s heart. He suddenly let out a cold laugh, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “It’s over.”
William froze, hardly believing what he heard. “W–what do you mean, over?”

“Divorced,” Benson repeated, his tone filled with self–mockery and helplessness. “You heard me right. I’m divorced.”
William was utterly shocked, his mouth forming a big “O.” “You, divorced?!”
He couldn’t believe it. The Benson who had been so obsessed with Yvonne for all these years had actually gone through with a divorce. He had always thought that Benson would never let go.
“She might have been tired,” Benson said, his voice low and cold, as if he was stating something that didn’t concern him.
Matthew and William exchanged a glance, suddenly at a loss for how to react. They had thought this was just a momentary impulse from Benson or some sort of drama, but they hadn’t expected the divorce to actually happen in this way.
“I heard that when you got divorced, you were forced by the Taylor family’s bodyguards?” William asked cautiously, a trace of disbelief in his eyes.
Matthew’s heart skipped a beat. As Benson’s friend for many years, he knew him too well. The golden boy, born with a silver spoon, was so pathetic in front of the woman he loved. Could his pride bear it?
He couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness.
However, William couldn’t hold back his laughter, his voice carrying a hint of teasing. “Benson, I never thought I’d see the day!”
Benson’s gaze immediately turned icy, sharp enough to pierce through William. “Do you want to die?”
William quickly raised his hand in surrender. “Calm down, calm down! Mr. Benson, I know you’re in a bad mood because of the divorce, but don’t take it out on me. I just think it’s all so unexpected.”
Seeing Benson getting agitated, Matthew shook his head and handed the glass back to him. “Since it’s over, why keep tormenting yourself? It’s time to wake up.”
Benson took the glass, remaining silent, but the coldness in his eyes didn’t diminish. He clutched the glass tightly, as if it was his only anchor.

Matthew sighed and gently patted Benson’s shoulder. “So, it’s finally over. Congratulations to Yvonne.”
The words felt like a sharp knife, stabbing straight into Benson’s heart, making it hard for him to breathe.
Pain and anger flashed in his eyes as he looked at Matthew with a face that had turned pale with fury.
Matthew didn’t flinch under Benson’s angry gaze. He calmly continued, ” Bro, Yvonne insisted on the divorce. I think that’s perfectly normal. Any reasonable person would choose the same. Ask yourself, all these years you were together, what did you really give her?”
Benson’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he clenched the glass in his hand, his knuckles turning white.
At that moment, it was as if he was searching for answers in his mind, but
he couldn’t replace them.
Then, suddenly, he poured himself another glass, tilted his head back, and let the burning liquor sear his throat, momentarily numbing the bitterness and helplessness inside him.
“I don’t want to look back,” he said quietly. “I just want to start over.”
Matthew looked at him, his eyes filled with sorrow and helplessness. “You want to start over, but what about Yvonne? Does she want to start over?”
He paused, his tone becoming more serious. “You say you love her, but do you really understand what love is? Or do you just think you love her because her presence makes you feel good?
She’s beautiful, has a great figure–those are rare qualities. But she’s not just a pretty face; she’s smart and wise, a true gem. You’ve said it yourself, the more time you spent with her, the more you realized her charm, the more you were drawn to her.”
Benson’s gaze grew increasingly complex, and as he looked at Matthew, there was a hint of confusion and uncertainty in his eyes, as if Matthew’s words had struck a chord deep within him that he had been avoiding.

Matthew continued, “People always gravitate towards things that make them feel comfortable and happy. That’s human nature. When you were with Yvonne, maybe you felt comfortable and happy because her presence filled certain voids in your life, giving you a sense of satisfaction.
But have you ever thought about Yvonne? Was she really happy with you? Did she feel comfortable? Was she content?”
These words cut straight into Benson’s heart like a sharp knife. His hand holding the glass trembled slightly, and the walls he had built around
himself started to crumble.
His pride and stubbornness had prevented him from facing these questions, but Matthew’s probing left him with no place to hide.
He had once thought that no matter how determined Yvonne was to divorce him, he would do whatever it took to keep her by his side, whether she agreed or not, making her his own.
But could this kind of forced possession truly be called love?
Benson’s gaze gradually dimmed. He had once dismissed Yvonne’s accusations, believing that he had given everything in their relationship .
Yvonne had said he didn’t know how to love, but he had never believed it,
refusing to admit it. He thought he had done so much for Yvonne, even willing to give up everything for her. Give up the Taylor Group, give up everything he once considered his life. Wasn’t that enough?
But deep down, a voice kept questioning him.
Yes, it wasn’t enough. He had always known it wasn’t enough.
Matthew’s questions stirred up a storm in his heart, forcing him to confront the truths he had been avoiding.
“All these years you were together, what did you really give her?”
Matthew’s voice echoed in Benson’s ears, like a heavy hammer striking the most fragile part of his heart.
Benson wasn’t one to deceive himself. In his career, he always reflected,
en are far ting
summed up, identified problems, and made improvements. However, in this marriage, he chose to avoid reflection because he was afraid.
He was afraid to think back on what he had done, and more importantly, what he hadn’t done in these past years.
He knew he had brought Yvonne not just hurt, but a deep sense of guilt.
He closed his eyes in pain, memories of his time with Yvonne flooding his mind. Every smile, every argument, every moment she shed tears, cut into his heart like a knife.
He realized that his so–called love was more about possession, about filling the emptiness inside him, rather than true respect and
understanding for her.

Apart from causing pain, he had given Yvonne almost no real happiness.
