Benson 272
Chapter 272: Gentle Compromise in the Midst of Hardship
By the time Benson quietly slipped out of the hospital, night had already fallen. His face was pale, almost like a piece of paper from which all the color had been drained, and his lips were bloodless, as if he might faint at any moment.
Seeing him like this, Yvonne felt a mix of helplessness and frustration, and she couldn’t help but reprimand him in a low voice, “If you keep up this act, you’re going to lose your life.”
Benson, however, simply smiled nonchalantly, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly
with a hint of stubbornness and mischief.
“I know what I’m doing,” he said softly, but there was an inexplicable firmness in his
tone.
Yvonne frowned at him, feeling a wave of irritation. “Wait here. I’ll get the car and take you back to the hospital.”
Her tone was laced with impatience, as if she didn’t want to stay even a second
longer.
But Benson seemed not to hear her. Instead, he turned to the security guard standing nearby and said, “Uncle, could borrow a coat? I’m really cold.” His voice carried a hint of vulnerability, making him sound almost fragile.
The security guard hesitated for a moment before retrieving an old coat from the cabinet and handing it to him.
Benson quickly wrapped the coat around himself, but his pallor didn’t improve, as if the chill had seeped into his very bones.
Despite this, he continued to force a smile, saying, “My legs aren’t broken, and my arms aren’t either, but the impact from the airbag was no joke. My arm still feels numb and sore.”
As he spoke, he gently rubbed his injured arm, as if trying to ease the pain.
Seeing his stubbornness, Yvonne felt even more exasperated. Without looking back, she strode toward the parking lot, her steps quick and determined.
Benson followed closely behind her, his steps slightly unsteady but persistent nonetheless.
“I checked the calendar, and it’s been a few months since the New Year,” his voice came from behind, tinged with fatigue and complexity. “Mom said we’re divorced.
Seeing how you’re acting now, I’m starting to believe it.”
At these words, Yvonne abruptly stopped and turned to face him. There was a hint of coldness and disdain in her eyes. “If you believe it, then why are you still coming after me?”
Benson looked at her, his expression growing more serious, with a glimmer of
sincerity in his eyes. “I’m here to win you back,” he said simply and firmly, as if this was his only goal at the moment.
Yvonne let out a cold laugh, recalling the words he had once said. “That’s not what you said before. You once said there would come a time when you’d be begging me.”
Benson frowned, thinking hard as if trying to remember that conversation. He shook his head slightly and said apologetically, “I wouldn’t be so harsh now. Isn’t this me begging you?”
His tone was laced with a mix of helplessness and sincerity as he reached out, trying to grasp her arm.
Seeing his frail state, Yvonne couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity, but she kept her composure. “You should be resting in the hospital, not throwing a tantrum out here.”
Benson ignored her scolding and, in a slightly weak voice, said, “Yvonne, slow down. I really don’t feel well right now.”
His voice carried a plea, as if he were no longer the strong–willed man he used to be but rather a patient in need of care.
Yvonne took a deep breath, turned, and started walking away. “Then just wait here,” she said coldly, clearly out of patience.
Benson watched her retreating figure, feeling a wave of helplessness and regret. In a low voice, he muttered, “I just….wanted to see you a little longer.”
His voice was full of tenderness and reluctance, his gaze fixed on her as she walked
away.
Yvonne didn’t respond, quickening her pace toward the security office. She called her mother, Olivia, asking her to come with the car to pick them up. Afterward, she called Arthur, briefly explaining Benson’s situation.
A few minutes later, Benson finally sat down on a sofa in the security office, leaning against her shoulder, his eyes closed in exhaustion. It was as if overnight, he had transformed from the confident, assertive man he once was into a fragile, helpless patient.
George was the first to arrive at the hospital. When he saw Benson’s condition and
learned about their divorce, he was alumner
“I was only on leave for five months, and you’re divorced already?” George’s voles was full of anger and disbelief. Looking at Denson’s pale face, his anger only grew
“This family is falling apart!” he fumed, grating his phone and unleashing a terrent of scolding on Benson’s assistant, Joseph.
On the other end of the line, Joseph took the scolding in silence, full of grievances but too afraid to talk back.
After hanging up, George felt that Joseph was utterly useless.
The commotion woke Benson, his vision a bit blurry at first, but he soon realized it was George speaking. Slowly turning his head, Benson asked in a hoarse voice, “Why did you take a two–month leave?”
George was caught off guard by the sudden question, standing awkwardly, unsure how to answer. Silently, he thought to himself, “You should be asking yourself that…”
But he swallowed the words and forced out a reply, “That leg was broken for nothing.”
George’s frustration filled the air, tinged with a hint of self mockery.
Despite this, he had no intention of continuing the argument. He quietly pocketed his phone, trying to avoid getting further entangled in Benson’s emotions.
Back at the hospital, Benson was naturally subjected to a series of tests. Though he was clearly exhausted, he stubbornly refused to let go, clinging tightly to Yvonne’s hand as if her leaving would plunge him into endless darkness.
“Benson, you really are….still the same.”
Yvonne was growing weary of his grip, but there was a hint of complex emotion in her voice. “When things were good, you held on with a strong hand. Now that we’re divorced, you’re trying to wear me down.”
Her words seemed to strike a nerve with Benson. He suddenly froze, loosening his grip on her hand.
Silence settled between them, filling the air with a subtle awkwardness and
unspoken feelings.
Benson lowered his head, a flicker of remorse passing through his eyes. He suddenly remembered how Matthew had warned him not to make Yvonne uncomfortable or unhappy, yet it seemed he had crossed the line again.
After a long night of turmoil, Yvonne had initially planned to leave. But seeing

Benson’s closed eyes and weakened state, she felt a strange sense of worry
She feared that Benson might relapse into his old stubbornness, even storming her home and causing a scene.
So, after discussing it with Arthur, they decided that Yvonne would stay overnight to keep watch, and Arthur would take over in the morning.
This decision left Yvonne feeling conflicted, knowing she was making a reluctant compromise.
When she finally decided to stay, Benson seemed to sense it. Lying on the hospital bed, he let out a soft sigh of relief, a faint look of ease crossing his face.
It was as if, with her presence, he could replace some semblance of peace.
As the night grew quiet, the hospital room was filled only with the sound of soft
breathing and the occasional beep of the medical equipment.
Yvonne turned off the lights and lay on the cot beside the bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
She stared at the ceiling, her mind in turmoil,
