Chapter 284: Cracks

Benson silently gritted his teeth, sensing the subtle hints in Jeremy’s

words. Though Jeremy hadn’t explicitly admitted anything, neither had he denied it outright.

Jeremy had always been meticulous, leaving behind minimal traces.

Benson found himself momentarily without the solid evidence needed to counter Jeremy’s composed demeanor.

He could only watch helplessly as Jeremy navigated through his

interrogation with ease.

Jeremy, seemingly bored by the confrontation, cast a cold glance at Benson and turned to leave. However, just as he turned around, a firm hand gripped his shoulder, halting his departure. Though the grip wasn’t forceful, it was enough to stop him. Jeremy slightly turned his head, a flicker of impatience in his eyes.

“What exactly do you want?” Benson’s voice was low and determined, as if probing the depths of Jeremy’s intentions.

Jeremy glanced at him with a mixture of disdain and mockery. “I like Yvonne, and you’re divorced. Whatever I do now has nothing to do with you.”

“But Yvonne isn’t all you want.” Benson’s voice was as cold as a blade, cutting straight to what he believed was Jeremy’s true motive.

He was convinced that Jeremy’s intentions weren’t as simple as they appeared; there was undoubtedly a deeper plot and ambition lurking within

him.

Jeremy sighed, his gaze filled with a weary kind of resignation. He studied Benson carefully, as if pondering why Benson was so stubborn.

Finally, he let out a light laugh, his tone laced with sarcasm. “Fine, if you need a reason to back off, I’ll give you one. Yes, I’m interested in Yvonne, and I’m interested in the Taylor Group. Is that reason enough for you?”

Benson didn’t release his grip, his eyed sharp as knives, piercing into

Jeremy’s own as if trying to unravel his true intentions. Though Jeremy’s words were delivered casually, his flippant attitude only fueled Bensors

anger

Jeremy’s nonchalant expression and dismissive tone didn’t diffuse

Benson’s rage. On the contrary, it made Benson’s grip on Jeremy’s shoulder tighten.

At that moment, Yvonne noticed the tense standoff from a distance. Che had been quietly conversing with Raymond when she caught sight of the brewing confrontation, and her heart skipped a beat.

Frowning, she felt a surge of frustration and confusion. Why was this man always so immature? Did he have to escalate things to a point of no return to feel satisfied?

Realizing that the situation could escalate, Yvonne quickly composed

herself and made her way over to the two men without drawing attention from the others. Her steps were brisk, trying to suppress the anxiety and irritation brewing within her.

“Let him go,” Yvonne’s voice was firm, leaving no room for argument.

Benson shot her a cold glance, his displeasure evident, but he obeyed, releasing his grip. His expression remained stern, his eyes reflecting a hint of resentment.

Jeremy rotated his shoulder, a faint smile returning to his face as if nothing had happened. “No harm done, just a joke that seems to have upset Mr. Benson.” His tone was light, his gaze carrying a hint of

reassurance.

Yvonne nodded slightly, feeling a twinge of guilt. After all, this wasn’t the first time Benson had targeted Jeremy without cause, and Jeremy had always handled it with grace, never causing her any trouble.

She knew that as a friend, Jeremy had been more than accommodating and understanding.

“I’ll leave you two to it,” Jeremy said, nodding politely to Yvonne before

turning to leave. He walked away calmly, as if the confrontation hadn’t affected him in the slightest.

Yvonne nodded back, still feeling apologetic toward Jeremy. After all, Benson wasn’t picking a fight for any real reason.

“I’ll go now. You two talk, though we don’t have any real conflict,” Jeremy

added.

Of course, there wasn’t any real conflict–Benson was just causing trouble

for no reason.

Benson let out a cold laugh, thinking to himself how that sounded so…

passive–aggressive.

Once Jeremy was out of sight, Yvonne grabbed Benson’s arm tightly, practically dragging him to a corner of the room. The lighting there was dim, and the noise of the banquet hall felt distant, creating a somewhat

isolated world for them.

“What exactly do you think you’re doing?” Yvonne’s voice was low, but every word dripped with anger and frustration.

Her eyes were filled with urgency, her brows furrowed as she stared at Benson, as if trying to extract an explanation from his gaze. “Why can’t you just leave him alone? What’s wrong with you? Mr. Benson, I’m begging you–he’s my client…”

There was a hint of a plea in her words, mixed with an unspoken message -Jeremy had been a crucial support to her.

Benson gazed at her, a bitter tide swelling within him. His expression darkened, his eyes flickering with a complex mix of emotions–anger, jealousy, and an indescribable pain.

He turned his head slightly, trying to suppress the emotions inside him, but he couldn’t hold back the wave of helplessness that overwhelmed him.

“Yvonne, are you pushing me away because you have feelings for him?” Benson’s voice trembled slightly, revealing the depth of his torment.

Yvonne’s expression grew colder. She took a deep breath, trying to steady

her emotions, but her brows only knitted tighter.

She stared into Benson’s eyes, her voice icy, “Benson, what’s gotten into you? We’re divorced. So what if I do have feelings for him?”

Her blunt response was like a dagger, stabbing directly into Benson’s heart. His gaze dimmed instantly, as if the world around him had lost all

its color.

His face turned pale, and his voice shook slightly, “You… you admit it?”

Yvonne didn’t look away. Instead, she lifted her chin slightly, her tone resolute, “Yes, we’re considering… getting together.”

Her words, though straightforward, carried a hint of suppressed pain. She knew this might hurt Benson, but she hoped that by being this direct, he would give up and stop pursuing her.

However, things didn’t go as she expected.

Benson’s reaction was more intense than she anticipated. He suddenly grabbed her wrist, his grip so tight that Yvonne winced.

“I won’t allow it!” His voice was low and firm, as if making a final stand.” Don’t you realize that the reason we’re in this mess might be because of

him…

Yvonne lifted her head slightly, looking up at Benson’s face. Despite everything that had happened between them, his features remained striking, almost irresistibly so. However, the recent car accident had left a faint scar on his temple.

Though it wasn’t very noticeable, it now seemed to symbolize the irreparable rift between them.

She remained silent for a moment, her mind a tangled mess of emotions,

unsure of how to respond.

She knew Benson wasn’t one to give up easily, but she also didn’t want to continue arguing with him in such a setting.

This was her event, her clients were present, and there were too many important people in the room. She didn’t want this pointless dispute to ruin

the atmosphere she had worked so hard to create.

“Benson, we got to this point because of ourselves, not because of anyone else.”

“Stop blaming others. It won’t help us.”
