Nathan remained half-squatting at Lucinda’s feet, his head bowed, enveloped in silence.

For a moment, he wondered if it was just his imagination, but it seemed like Lucinda was trying to offer him some comfort.

Her words hinted that she was acting out of self-preservation, and he didn’t need to take it to heart.

However, he dismissed the thought quickly.

She couldn’t even recall who he was; why would she offer him comfort?

That seemed unthinkable.

Observing the sorrowful man at her feet, who kept his gaze downward, Lucinda’s voice softened.

“Doesn’t it hurt your legs to keep squatting like that?”

Nathan shook his head in response.

To him, squatting was trivial.

If no one else was around, he would even consider kneeling and slapping himself as penance, just to jog her memory.

Lucinda pressed on, her voice tinged with distance, “You just mentioned having two five-year-olds.

At such an age, they need their parents.

Are you sure you want to stay here instead of being with them?”

Her tone implied she’d prefer him not to stay.

Nathan, visibly taken aback, nodded in determination.

He knew he needed to be with his wife.

Nothing could change his mind.

With a frown, Lucinda persisted, sounding increasingly impatient, “So, you’re not leaving? Hilda’s place isn’t large enough for all of you.

Plus, your children, they’ll be upset without someone around, right? It seems Like you care a lot about us, but you’re neglecting your own kids.

How can I trust what you say?”

Nathan’s voice cracked as he replied, “The kids are doing well lately.

Colby has been taking care of Destinee, and he doesn’t need me there.

Aldric is with them too; they’re not alone.”

His resolve was clear.

He was staying the night.

Sensing the tension, Hilda gave Lucinda’s hand a comforting pat and offered with a warm smile, “It’s alright.

I would be delighted to have Mr.

Payne stay with us.

Let me get some fresh bedding ready for you.”

Hilda rose from her seat and walked into the house, leaving only Nathan and Lucinda in the yard.

Lucinda was eager to end the discussion.

She echoed the words she had previously shared with Kyson.

“Rehashing this won’t change my mind.

I won’t believe you.

Just show me if you have our marriage certificate.”

Nathan met her gaze and confirmed, “Yes.”

Lucinda’s expression hardened.

She extended her hand and uttered, “Show it to me, then.”

As Nathan reached into his pocket, his anticipation to prove his point was palpable.

However, his expression fell as he realized the truth.

“I left the marriage certificate at home.

I didn’t… bring it with me…”

With a dismissive tone, Lucinda retorted, “Then stop claiming you’re my husband.

I won’t accept it without seeing that certificate.”
