Blood Lust -
Chapter Twenty-Two
"You keep ending up in the infirmary..." A voice.
"Are they gonna make it?" Another voice.
"...What are the odds?"
It felt so good to sleep, I wished I could've slept longer, or at least let me die. Maybe, they could've been a little more quiet.
I opened my mouth, mouthing words to whoever was still near me. My mouth was so dry.
"She's waking up." A voice I had hoped to be Doctor Toulouse's had spoke up, but when I finally peeled my eyes open, I was startled.
I was in a room with complete strangers, all facing me. "Who are you?" I questioned. I was uncomfortable with the idea that these people could be the ones I would have to rely on.
"I am Doctor Thomas." The woman in charge of the room had introduced herself, she seemed boring. "We are going to do this slow and easy." She shooed away the other people in the room.
"Water first." I demanded.
It's the least you can do for not letting me die.
She nodded and grabbed a glass from a cart, "Here you go." She paused to allow me time to chug the entire glass of water. "By reading your file, I'm sure you weren't too terribly attached to your previous condition.." She began.
"Just spit it out." I was tired and done with everyone and done being trapped on the island.
The Doctor sighed, "You lost the baby."
There was no release of emotion when I heard that. No shock or hurt. Nothing. "Oh." Was the only thing I could muster.
I could see that part of the doctor wanted to say sorry, or something like it. Instead, she stood still. She was waiting for a cue from me.
"What's next?" I took a deep breath and sat up. My body was sore. Bruised laid against every inch of skin that wasn't covered.
The doctor looked down, almost to hide shame. "You'll be taken back to the first floor until the Elder Aldrich comes to collect you."
I pushed myself to sit up, "Sounds good." I lied. I wanted to sleep some more. I still wanted to die. Now, more than ever before.
Thankfully the doctor had given me sometime to relax. She had said she'd come back when a Guard was free to transfer me. It felt nice to lay back in bed and drift off to sleep.
Once I had woken up, I looked up at the door. I could see a shadow casted on the wall through the screen of the door. The doctor must've told them to wait till I had woken up.
I sat up on the bed and realized I had no clean clothes. "Uhm, excuse me?" I called out to the shadow. "I don't have any clothes to change into." I saw the shadow figure move.
"I'm covering my eyes!" Dee's oh so familiar voice called before he opened the door. I was shocked to see he was the Guard that would transfer me.
"Oh, uh, thanks." Dee had chucked the pile of clothes into the room, not exactly aiming for anything. The pile fell at the edge of the bed. I stood up and quickly grabbed them.
Sliding off my hospital gown had given me a better view of the state of my body. Bruises splattered my body, swollen lumps here and there. It felt repugnant to even think about looking at myself in a mirror.
It took a lot of effort to pull the grey shirt over my head. The pants were a little easier to pull up, but the clothing only covered so much skin. It only covered up so much space. "Okay, you can come in." I called out to Dee.
Dee walked in. He looked concerned, but unable to speak. He pursed his lips together as if he were trying to get something out. "Let's go."
I followed behind him quietly as we walked through the infirmary of the second floor. I passed the room where the newborns were kept. A quick flutter of emotion came and went as fast as it took me to walk passed that door.
When we were in the clear of most prying ears, Dee opened up a bit, "You know I'd love to catch up and ask how you are..." He gave me a quick glance, "But things have not been great back on the first floor." He shoved his hands in his pockets.
"Nothings been great." I sneered.
"Can I ask?" He turned his whole body to face mine.
I laughed. This felt like high school all over again. "Only if you answer mine." I joked. I caught a faint smile from Dee.
"Did you sleep with someone?" He said accusingly. "Did you already have the baby?"
"I think I was set up. A Guard attacked me." I didn't know how to tell him.
"Wait, it wasn't a human?" He sounded confused. "You carry the gene?!" His voice changed. He sounded excited instead of confused.
"Yea but I lost it. I got in a fight with one of these crazy female Guards and now they're sending me back up here."
"It's safer for you up here." He said, but his mind was somewhere else. He looked like he already had a plan brewing in his head.
"Mind telling me what you're thinking? You've got that face on." I looked over at him as we continued walking towards the elevator.
"This all makes sense. Why R bonded so easily to you and you didn't!" He sounded giddy.
My heart shattered when Dee said his name. All of the emotions I should've had when the doctor spoke with me that morning, came rushing out of me in one giant wave. Tears welled up in the corner of my eyes, ready to burst.
Dee caught a glimpse of this, "Oh, I should warn you. He has gotten worse...A lot worse."
