BOONE - Part 1 of the HMB Doggie Series -
Epilogue
EPILOGUE
It’s a rainy Friday morning and John and I are sitting on the couch reading the paper. I’ve got my feet on his lap and every so often he reaches down to give them a little rub. Boone is laying across my lap. Never mind that he’s 90 pounds, he will always think he’s a lap dog. And a front seat dog. You should see the looks we get driving around town, John navigating and me sitting co-pilot with a gigantic German Shepherd in my lap. Comical doesn’t even begin to describe it.
Megan and James are coming over tonight for our weekly poker game. You’d think a few years of practice would improve my skills but unfortunately I’m just as bad as ever. John loves the fact that I have no poker face and likes to tease me about it almost as much as Megan likes to tease James. I don’t mind though. I know I suck…it’s part of my charm, as John says.
John works from home most days now, which is why we get the luxury of lazy mornings together. He’s no longer my agent since I refused to work for my husband. It’s just common sense…don’t shit where you eat.
And I’m sure you’re all wondering…is Eric still around?
No. The night he closed the door and opened the window was the last night he was here. While I will always miss him, I’m glad he’s moved on. Not a day goes by that I don’t look at his picture and remind him, wherever he is, that I love him. And I know I will see him again some day and thank him. He did say he would always take care of me, in any way he could. Delivering John to me was him doing just that.
I glance over the top of my paper to look at John. I still have to pinch myself sometimes. Who knew that this grumpy bastard would turn into a loving and sensitive husband. Robin was an idiot. Although I guess I should thank her since he’s now in my clutches and I plan on never letting go.
Megan was right: You really can love different people differently.
John catches me staring at him and gives me a wink. I can’t help but blush. I’m still a teenager at heart, I guess.
Boone raises his head and looks at me, “Happy. I’s happy dog.”
“You’re a good little boy, Boone.”
THE END…SORT OF ;)
