To bite, to tear without mercy were the thoughts that crossed Nebraska’s mind. Avenging the death of her family, and the wolves she had loved. Hatred consumed her and burned through every pore of her body, taking her breath away. There was nothing else.

The wolf in front of her was shaking, bigger than she remembered, more aggressive than in her memories but that didn’t make her tremble. She moved slowly towards it, ruffling the fur on its back and pointing its snout at her neck. She was fast, she could finish him off.

Liam then lunged at her. Nebraska dodged his body by moving to the right, still feeling the force against which he hit the snow. That was abnormal. The wolf’s face turned in her direction again and it lunged straight for one of her paws. Nebraska leapt at it and bounded away to a specific spot.

Revenge was delicious, but not when you had other priorities. He lamented, but he had two problems. First, as capable as she was, she was really weak and she knew she couldn’t stop him, plus Liam’s strength felt extremely intense. Second, she had two wolves waiting for her. Every second she spent there was time subtracted from both of their lives. So with all the pain in her soul and regaining control of herself, she walked over to Rudoc’s body and reached into her belt for the small pouch where she was sure the antidote was.

She clutched it in her teeth and pulled until she had it with her when an embracing pain shot from her back to every part of her body and she felt herself lifted and thrown ten feet from where she was. When she fell, b***d gushed from her muzzle and nose. It stained the fur of her body and would not stop. The pain was embracing and paralysing near his spine.

Out of the corner of her eye she could see Liam watching her like a predator. He had attacked her so fast she hadn’t noticed. She tried to get up but it seemed like a daunting task. She didn’t know how he had done it but there were now toxins inside her system that were beginning to destroy her skin and muscles.

What the hell had Liam become? He shuddered at the thought.

The wolf approached, when suddenly, it stopped and let out an ear-splitting howl. His forelegs buckled and he began to tremble. The muscles under her skin twitched strangely, growing, shrinking, looking like a bizarre image. Nebraska sat up slowly despite the pain, she couldn’t stay there.

She thought about attacking him now that he seemed helpless, but the look in his eyes only dared her to come closer, and she knew that if she let her instincts take over she would end up under the body that was beginning to grow to ridiculous proportions. So she ran past him, grabbed one of the few intact bones of what was left of her daughter and kept running without looking back. She was afraid that if she did she might replace Liam on top of her.

She ran, ran wild, letting her paws carry her away. If she thought she wouldn’t make it, the pain in her back was like acid burning her body. Behind her, a trail of b***d followed her. Her lungs squeezed but she didn’t stop. They had said they were on the grounds of Layan’s pack, she didn’t know those grounds but someone must be nearby, like a sentry. Someone should spot her and warn her what was going on.

But the idea faded away when there was only snow everywhere and it was starting to fall from the sky again. His sense of smell was impaired and made it impossible for him to try to replace where any source of life might be. She couldn’t howl, if she couldn’t give Liam her location and everything would go to hell.

She g*****d in frustration, she wanted the bag in her mouth to reach its destination quickly, but the way things were turning out it seemed luck was not on her side. She advanced a little over two kilometres when in the distance she spotted a shadow and stopped on alert although this took much of her energy. The figure seemed to detect her as well and ran towards her.

Nebraska took a few steps back so that the scent of the wolf could reach her nose and she could relax. It wasn’t an enemy, it was just Layan’s beta. With difficulty she sat down and waited. He was wobbling a little unsteadily, now that relief was setting in.

Kei paused and wagged her tail slightly. Nebraska wanted to smile but found it impossible, the toxins in her body were seeping deep inside and would soon be in important organs, she found it almost funny that she was poisoned when she was saving others from poisoning as well, though in her case it was different. Liam’s toxins were due to the change his body was undergoing. She had no idea what the hell was happening to her, but what was clear to her was that there was no cure inside her.

To stop its advance, she only did what was most advisable, she began to transform, that way they would lose at least a high percentage of effectiveness. The transformation was hellish and made her lose all her remaining strength.

-Take this to Siran,” he gasped, raising the bag in his small trembling hand in front of the beta’s nose, “He’ll know what to do with it, and tell him that Liam is responsible for everything.

The wolf hesitated and also transformed, grabbing her shoulders before she collapsed.

-I can’t leave you here.

Nebraska couldn’t tell Hades’ true status as this was supposed to be a secret in the pack but she had no choice if she wanted to put him on alert. She had no choice but to believe him.

-The lives of my alpha and my son are in danger,” she raised her head, looking him in the eye, “This is what keeps them alive, we can’t waste time. Please take them to him quickly.

Kei hesitated at his words.

-You will die if I leave you,” he frowned at her condition, especially the gaping wound on his back that threatened to get worse.

Nebraska smiled slightly.

-My alpha’s life is more important, a lot of wolves depend on him,” she lurched forward, everything around her spinning, “I know he’ll hate me for doing this, my children are already upset, but at least they’ll be safe, and that’s what matters to me. Please take it to him,” he pushed the bag against the wolf’s chest again.

He swallowed and nodded reluctantly.

He knew Layan would kill him for this. Layan’s residence was a bit far away, the other sentries were scattered, and if the situation was that bad it would take him a long time to carry it and then go to Hades’ pack. Yes, Layan would kill him for this for sure, but seeing the determination in the she-wolf’s eyes he couldn’t refuse.

-Wait here, they’ll come quickly for you.

She transformed into a wolf and let out a loud howl that echoed through the trees. Nebraska feared that Liam heard it too, but she didn’t care. A few seconds later she found herself alone again, naked and begging in the snow. She lowered her head and looked at her daughter’s bone and a tear rolled down her cheek. She felt so helpless. She hated her omega nature, it usually made her physically weaker and it marked her.

She flexed her back a little and had to close her eyes. The skin tugged painfully. With shivering hands, she opened a hole in the ground. At least she had to bury the remains of her daughter. Having betrayed the pack, by law, she could not perish on the pack grounds, and she didn’t want to force Hades to go against everyone for a selfish request. He couldn’t help a sob as the snow began to cover him again. It felt as if a piece of her was buried there.

She had never gotten along with Catherine, but she was still his daughter, the one he had carried in his stomach for months. She patted the snow as she finished closing the makeshift grave, tears frozen on her cheeks.

-Rest easy now,” he told her, and shortly afterwards she collapsed on the snow in exhaustion.

Her eyes were closing.

In a way she was relieved. She had not been able to fulfil her revenge, but at least Rudoc was dead, her daughter had her rest and the medicine to save her husband and son was on its way. You can’t always get everything in life, but at least she was content.

She only regretted not being able to see her husband’s face once more.
