CEO's Tears Over Pregnancy Test Discovery -
Chapter 1579
Jamie's heart nearly jumped out of her chest.
She rushed over to check on Charlie. "Are you okay? Does it hurt? Let Mommy blow on it."
"It doesn't hurt. I just accidentally bumped into that lady." Charlie mumbled, clutching the hem of his shirt awkwardly.
Jamie looked up, ready to apologize, but the woman didn't say anything and simply turned and walked away.
Did she look scary or something?
"That woman was wearing a mask and didn't seem trustworthy. Don't bother," Ben said with a frown.
Hearing that, Jamie decided to let it go.
Thankfully, Charlie wasn't hurt.
"You worry too much about Charlie. A small fall like this won't hurt him," Ben remarked.
"I know. I just can't change overnight," Jamie admitted.
She understood what Ben was saying. But habits, especially those built on years of fear and caution, weren't easy to break.
They didn't dwell on the incident, quickly putting it out of their minds as they continued to help Charlie pick out his school supplies.
*
Meanwhile, the woman who had walked away took off her mask in a secluded corner and discreetly snapped a photo with her phone, capturing the harmonious scene of the three of them-like a picture-perfect family.
*
By the time they were done, Jamie had bought Charlie a pencil case, a backpack, and a set of pencils. Loaded with supplies, they also treated Charlie to some ice cream.
The day's excitement left Charlie completely worn out, and he fell asleep in the car on the way home.
Jamie cradled him for a while, but her arms grew sore. Noticing her flexing her wrist, Ben offered, "Let me take him. There's still a while before we get home, and you must be tired." Jamie hesitated but carefully passed Charlie over.
In Ben's arms, Charlie stirred slightly before settling into a comfortable position, sleeping soundly.
Jamie watched them, her expression unconsciously softening.
Soon, she felt her own fatigue catching up to her. Her eyelids grew heavy, and before she realized it, she had dozed off, leaning against Ben's shoulder.
Ben adjusted her position gently, making sure she was comfortable as she rested.
*
When Jamie woke up, the car was already parked downstairs.
"Are we there?" she asked groggily.
Ben opened his eyes, his voice slightly hoarse from resting. "Yeah, we're here." Charlie was still asleep in his arms.
The atmosphere was unexpectedly peaceful, so much so that Jamie felt an odd sense of familiarity, as though they were an old married couple.
Startled by her own thoughts, she reached out for Charlie. "Thanks for carrying him. Let me take him back."
"You can't manage him. I'll do it," Ben said, not handing Charlie over.
The three of them took the elevator up together. Ben carried Charlie on his back, while Jamie stood by his side.
In the elevator, they encountered a kind elderly lady who smiled warmly at them.
"Jamie, is this Charlie's dad?"
Jamie opened her mouth to deny it, but Ben beat her to it.
"I am Charlie's dad."
The old lady's face lit up with understanding, leaving Jamie momentarily at a loss.
She started to explain but stopped herself. Why bother? It was the truth anyway.
*
Ben gently tucked Charlie into bed, carefully pulling the blanket over him.
"Thanks for everything. You should head home. It's getting late," Jamie said awkwardly. She felt bad for kicking him out after he had spent the whole day with them, but she also couldn't let him stay.
As he turned to leave, Ben suddenly asked, "What's your plan for replaceing Winnie?" "What?" Jamie froze, caught off guard by his question.
Ben's expression remained calm. "If what you said is true, this could be a setup targeting either of us. Maybe Winnie's message was a warning. So, what's your plan for replaceing her?"
Jamie hesitated before replying, "I don't have a solid plan yet. I'll probably start by replaceing a job first."
