Chapter 317:

Andrew looked at Dane with a knowing smile.

Madisyn immediately grasped what Dane meant. He obviously wanted to give the necklace to Susan but felt too shy to do it himself, so he bought two and had Madisyn give one to her. Madisyn smiled in amazement at seeing Dane so bashful.

However, Susan remained oblivious to everything as she continued shopping with Madisyn. They didn’t leave until it was late at night.

“You guys can leave. I’ll drive Susan home,” Madisyn said to the men.

Andrew pursed his lips, reluctant to part with his girlfriend, but nodded anyway.

Dane looked at Susan, who turned to Madisyn without sparing him a glance. He looked a little lonely and finally turned around to leave with Andrew. They walked quietly into the night.

When Madisyn and Susan were alone, Madisyn took out one of the raindrop-shaped necklaces and said, “Dane bought two, and I can’t wear both. You should have one.”

Susan shook her head. “I don’t want it, Madisyn. You can keep it for yourself or give it to someone else.”

“Why? Don’t you like it?”

After a brief silence, Susan replied, “I honestly don’t want it, as I have other necklaces.”

Madisyn sighed. “Susan, is there some misunderstanding between you and Dane?”

“No, I think Dane is a great guy, but this is a gift for you. I can’t accept it.”

Madisyn was rendered speechless. Seeing that Susan was clearly pretending not to understand, Madisyn took her hand and placed the necklace in her palm, saying, “I can’t wear two of these, so I’m giving one to you. You can consider my brother as yours. Just take it. Get in the car. I’ll drive you to the hospital.”

“Okay…” Susan didn’t refuse any longer.

Madisyn drove Susan back to the hospital. When they reached the hospital gate, they said their goodbyes. As Susan arrived on the floor where Erick, her grandfather, was, she spotted a familiar figure nearby.

Even though his back was to her, she could recognize him at a glance. It was Dane, talking on the phone.

Why was Dane here? Was he here to see someone?

Susan gently walked over.

Dane’s phone conversation halted her in her tracks. “Have you arranged everything properly? Keep a close watch on Mr. Bowers and ensure nothing happens to him. Otherwise, I’ll hold you responsible!”

Mr. Bowers?

Susan was shocked.

Wasn’t it her grandpa? What was Dane doing?

Dane had just hung up the phone when a cold voice caught him off guard from behind. “What are you going to do to my grandfather?”

Dane turned around to see Susan staring at him defiantly.

Dane felt a sting in his heart. Did she really think of him as a terrible person?

He maintained a calm composure. “Don’t worry. If I wanted to do something to your grandfather, you wouldn’t be able to stop me.”

“Then what are you doing?” Susan queried with a frown. “Do you think your grandfather is safe? He is very weak during his recovery period, so he needs people to look out for him.”

Susan recalled the men in black who usually wandered around the ward. She had thought they were passersby but didn’t expect them to be Dane’s men. So, he had sent people to silently protect her grandfather?

Susan suddenly felt bad. She shifted her gaze to the floor uncomfortably and stiffly said, “Even if you help me, I can’t repay you.”

“Help you?” Dane sneered. “Do you think I’m helping you? I just don’t want to see Madisyn sad. If something happens to your grandfather, you’ll be sad, and when you are, she’ll be worried about you. Do you understand?”

Susan shifted her gaze from the floor. She understood what he had just said and accepted this reasoning. After all, Dane didn’t like her. If it weren’t for this reason, he wouldn’t be here.

“Thank you, but my grandfather is awake now, and everything is fine. I am here every day, so don’t stress,” Susan said lightly.

“It’s none of your business,” Dane said sharply and domineeringly.

Susan’s lips parted in surprise, and then she closed them shut. This guy was really used to being domineering.

She walked away, heading for the ward.

When Erick saw Susan return, he asked how her day went.

“I had a great day, Grandpa.”

“That’s good. You are still young. You don’t always have to stay with me. You should go out and have fun more,” Erick said earnestly.

Susan nodded. “I know, Grandpa.”

“By the way, your dad came to see me. He wants you to work in the company.” Erick looked at her and smiled warmly. “Your dad still cares about you, Susan. Don’t always quarrel with him.”

Susan felt bitter deep down. Her dad still cared about her? She really couldn’t tell. But Susan was genuinely surprised that Esteban asked her to work in the company, because Esteban preferred Jada over her and had decided to hand over the company to Jada.

“I’d better not,” Susan said lightly.

“Why? This is a great opportunity for you to hone your skills.” Erick did not seem to understand Susan’s refusal.
