Chapter 44

So much for not being ready to see that again. Now it was all standing in her face, quise literally.

Kylan, shat Why do you always make me jump?" she chastised him, averting her eyes from his naked chest in favor of putting her tiny clothes near her suitcase.

"That was the one and only doctor appointment I had you come with me if you forget," Kylan ignored her jumpiness, stepping inside the bathroom and over to one of the two smks

She rolled her eyes and wandered back into the bathroom herself, stopping in front of the adjacent sink. "Yeah, because you know I'm not going to bullshit for you, not when it comes to her health."

Grabbing her brush, she tugged it through her curls and then wrapped her hair back into a bun, replaceing an elastic in her toiletry bag and securing her hair in place. She started the process of wetting her face to wash it, acutely aware of Kylan's eyes fixed on her

"I didn't need you to bullshit for me. My insomnia wasn't that prevalent at the time," Kylan insisted, reaching into a bag of his own and withdrawin a bottle of an expensive-looking face wash.

She watched him wash his hands, wet his face, and slather a generous amount of the cleanser over his skin. She sighed and did the same with drugstore cleanser, taking care to remove all traces of makeup.

She was going to be the most exposed, the most unmade up she had ever appeared around Kylan, and the thought added to her nerves. She did he best not to focus on yet another thing that would be new about this entire experience.

"I was prevalent, Kylan. You know that You were coming to work with dark circles under your eyes and you were angry Way angrier than you normally are, anyway" She found a small washcloth on a shelf below the sink and parted her face dry

She wet her electric toothbrush under a stream of water from the sink, squirted far too much toothpaste over the bristles, and then turned to look at Rylan, her eyebrows raised while she brushed her teeth.

Kylan rolled his eyes at her in the mirror, drying his face off and then surprising her by leaning forward and removing a set of contacts from his eyes with namble fingers. She had no idea Kylan needed corrective lenses, to begin with. He deposited the contacts in a holder on the counter that was filled with solution. He then opened a small, black case and withdrew a pair of medium-sized, dark-rimmed glasses, and slipped them on has

face

Her toothbrush stilled in her mouth her eyes fixed on Kylan. Who looked. Well, damn. He looked good. The frames were perfect for the shape of his face, the black contrasting with both his pale skin and also the darkness of his hair and eyes alike. She was gawking, she knew she was. And maybe it was the alcohol or the exhaustion from a long day of work, travel, and introducing Kylan to her dad, but she didn't look away nearly as quickly as she should have.

Kylan noticed, she was certain he did. He gave her a pointed stare, one of his eyebrows cocked while he brushed his own teeth. She shook her head and finished with her toothbrush, spitting and then rinsing her mouth in the sink. She washed her hands and made her way to the bedroom, pausing when she reached the bed. She stared down at it, taking notice of the ridiculous amount of throw pillows that were scattered around near the headboard. Why were there so many? How many should she take off? Would Kylan want her to leave some of them in the center of the bed to separate them?

The bed isn't going to bite you, Kairina," Kylan said on her left.

She stuffed to look at him, watching as he walked around the bed and stopped on the opposite side from where she stood. He bent down and plugged his phone in near the nightstand. Then, he ran his fingers through his hair and turned to look at the ground in front of him. Her eyes widened when he seemed to fall down.

She gasped, scrambling to look at him and then immediately stopping when she realized the bastard was doing pushups, his glasses perched on his nose precariously. She tried, really tried to ignore the way his back muscles pulled together or the way his biceps contracted with each pashup. And. she especially attempted to ignore the way he was practically thrusting his pelvis to the ground every time he went down,

"I'm surprised you're willing to touch the floor at all," she mumbled, walking back over to her side of the bed, pulling a few of the throw pillows off and tossing them aimlessly to somewhere in the room

"I do pushups every night, Kate," Kylan granted from his place on the ground.

It was the alcohol. The alcohol and sleep deprivation She rolled her eyes, her checks feeling warm and her head feeling light and airy. And not because of the half-naked run on the other side of the bed. The inan who was her boss.

She pulled back the davet, slipping inside and positioning it over her She remained propped against the headboard though, opting to grab the sketchbook and graphite pencil she had put on her nightstand when she unpacked:

She flipped to a free page of the sketchbook and began to pencil out an outline of her father at dumer rather that night, the memory of him Laughing and talking with case, floating to the forefront of her mind. He had seemed so praceful, so carefree. His checks had been rasy from the wine, his weatherworn face serene and calm. She wanted to preserve the monwat in stone, or paper really

She hardly noted when Kylan fished with has carise and walked to the blooms to wash his hands again. She felt the best sink some next na

her and glanced over at Kylan as he got under the duvet with her.

With her. In the same bed. He was in the same bed as her.
