SELENE IS DECEIVED

– Today, we finally have our god or goddess, the ruler of the moon! – Zeus speaks loudly so that everyone can hear them silently.

The arena is near the boundary between heaven and earth, all the gods, even the god of the underworld, are present.

– My children, Máni and Selene will dispute the title – pronounces Zeus with his chest full of pride.

Máni and Selene are twin brothers, born in the eclipse caused by the alignment of all the planets, this only happens every millennium. For five hundred and fifty years they have trained hard for this great day.

Máni, five meters eighty-five centimeters tall, had silver hair and amber eyes. His body is muscular, square-jawed and without a single strand of beard. His voice is deep, his presence is commanding and can be felt from miles away. However, kindness has never been his forte, he is arrogant, spoiled, he has always believed himself superior; the word love has never been part of his dictionary. He is an extraordinary warrior, hunting has his name as a description. But Selene, never lagging behind, was always one step ahead of him; Máni did not see this in a good light.

Unlike her twin brother, Selene is an average of four meters and sixty-three centimeters tall. Her hair, like her brother’s, was silver and reached down to her slender waist. Her eyes were blue, a dark shade, but one that conveyed tranquility, from her skin radiated a bluish light. Her body was slender, but with all muscles defined, she was the best in hunting, sports, strategies. Her teacher was Athena herself, the eldest and favorite daughter of Zeus. Selene is fascinated by love, unlike her brother, she never wished to be any goddess, all she wanted was to have a companion by her side.

Selene hid a secret, in the world of mortals, she will replace what she has always been looking for. Love came in the form of a human man; she always looked at the sky while the stars were shining. She spent several days watching him, his shoulder-length black hair fluttering in the hiss of the night wind. His strong muscles from days of hard training, the dark color of his skin, his full lips and well-groomed beard, she was fascinated by the masculine beauty before her. But one night, she decided to disguise herself as a human and called him by name:

– Licaão – a sweet sound hovering over the quiet whistling of the wind filling the young king’s ears, as if the most beautiful of songs were resounding in his timpani.

– Who are you? – You could see in his eyes how impressed he was by the beauty of the woman before him. You will never be more beautiful.

– My name is Selene, what do you observe so much in the sky? – he takes a few steps, placing himself next to Licaão.

She wanted to take Zeus’ place, she wanted to be worshipped, and so a war broke out that quickly came to an end; Zeus killed her in battle, her body fell into the abundant springs of the earth and made the waters salty, so that humans could survive, Zeus created fresh water among the mounds of earth.

The moon always played an important role, she was essential, when the ancient goddess passed away, the night sky was left without its ruler. Zeus made a replacement star, but she too died a few years ago. Luckily, it is not long before the new ruler is chosen, and the sky returns to its glory days.

– It will reappear,” Selene speaks with conviction and Licaão looks at the profile of her face.

– Coming from you, I have no doubt – she answers smiling.

Every night the couple met under the stars on the beach. Selene sighed and counted the hours to see her beloved again. But this secret did not last long, her brother found out and saw there an opportunity to conquer her. Blackmail was not without honor for Máni.

– Stop the competition! – he imposes calmly as he walks with her through the white rose gardens.

– No, I have prepared a lot for this day, and I will not….

– I’ll tell Zeus about your escapades in the human world, and I’m sure Dad won’t be amused,” she threatened darkly.

At the same instant Selene’s body stops moving, the air seems to get heavier, she disguises the slight trembling of her fingers by clenching her hands into fists.

– Are you blackmailing me? – she asks with a frown and her mouth compressed into a straight line.

– My dear sister, I’m just making things easier for both of us – smiles Máni, showing off her perfect teeth.

– I don’t see how this can be easy – he mumbles with his jaw hardened in anger.

– When I become the moon god, I will be able to intercede for you to become a human so you can live together with your beloved -Selene starts to get interested in her brother’s words – However, you will have to bring me a wolf – her smile turns dark and this made Selene shudder.

– Why a wolf? – her eyebrows come together in confusion, and that amused Máni.

– On the day of the contest we have to give each other a gift, I want a wolf, big and black, different from the others, bigger and with red eyes. I want it. Then we’ll both be happy – he looks into his sister’s eyes, making it clear that he is not open to any other kind of negotiation.

– Do you promise that I will transform into a human? – he sighs, surrendering, this reaction makes Máni’s smile widen even more.

– Of course my sister, have I ever lied? – She slips her arm around her sister’s shoulder and they head to the castle of their father, Zeus.

Hope has blinded Selene, she should not have believed her twin brother’s false words.

– I miss the moon, I haven’t seen it in the sky for years, counting the months has become practically impossible – she speaks sincerely.
