Chapter 43: Unworthy

When Michael ditched Chloe by the roadside for the second time, she wasn’t as shocked as before. She didn’t even bother calling him a jerk.

She grabbed a ride and headed to Candy’s place.

Her phone buzzed with a payment reminder text.

Chloe opened it and saw the gift she had meant to get for Michael. It had been out of stock and had to be shipped from overseas. She had waited a long time for it.

Purchases should just deduct directly from your card–no need for a payment reminder.

Chloe glanced at her card and saw Michael had straight–up canceled it.

She thought, “No wonder the payment didn’t go through.”

Over the years of marriage, Michael always kept her well–provided for.

After all, she was Michael’s wife and part of the Shawn family. Of course, she had to have some money in her hands.

Michael had given her a few cards, basically just secondary cards linked to his main accounts.

Chloe never got upset about being the secondary cardholder. She wasn’t after his money, so it didn’t bother her.

So today, Michael went ahead and canceled all her additional

credit cards.

The store probably called Chloe because the payment didn’t go. through.

“Hey Ms. Nelson, the belt you ordered just came in. Would you like to pick it up, or should we deliver it to you after an online payment?”

I kept it subtle, not mentioning the failed payment at all.

But Chloe was still fuming. “I don’t want that belt anymore.”

She hung up before they even had a chance to react.

She thought, “Man, I was such an idiot to buy him a gift!”

He’s such a jerk, not worth buying a gift for.

Chloe’s card got suspended, and it’s definitely causing her some trouble.

For the past three years, every penny she earned working at Paramount Airlines went towards her mother’s medical bills. She was practically broke.

Even if she starts taking orders now, she won’t get paid right

away.

Chloe sat in the café, staring at the wedding ring on her finger for what felt like forever.

She grabbed her coffee, stood up, and found a shop that traded in second–hand luxury goods.

She slipped the ring off her finger and placed it on the counter. “I want to sell this.”

The waitress gaped at the massive pink diamond ring on her finger, clearly stunned.

“Miss, are you sure you want to sell this ring?”

Just one look at the ring, and you could tell it was no ordinary luxury item.

Chloe shot her a glance, saying nothing. That look spoke volumes.

“Keep the ring. Hit me up once you replace a buyer. The price? Not a penny less than five million dollars.”

Chloe dropped her contact info and left without a second thought.

As Candy sat down to eat, she noticed the big diamond ring was missing from her hand. “Where’s your ring? Is Michael leaving?she asked.

“I sold it.”

Chloe wiped her mouth with a napkin, her voice calm.

Candy shot her a surprised look. “You sold your diamond ring? Are you so broke you can’t afford food?”

Chloe shrugged, “Yep, you’re covering this. Michael froze all my cards.”

“How could he treat you like that? What a jerk!”

Chloe stayed silent, but her silence said it all.

Candy thought for a moment, then slapped the table. “Don’t worry about the money. If you’re really short, just take some from me.”

She might not be as rich as the Shawn family, but supporting Chloe was a piece of cake–as long as she didn’t go buying jets or tanks.

Chloe shook her head. She’d figure out the money herself; she didn’t want to bother Candy.

“Hey, can you pick up some extra gigs for me? I’m hustling to make some extra cash.”
