Down End Road -
Chapter 28
The order of Adams. The order of Adams. The order of Adams. The name repeated itself in my head. A week earlier, Henry had told me that the order of Adams’ portal supposedly, had dragons. Dragons that breathed fire and water and air. Dragons that had wingspans of fifty feet and tails made entirely of scaled spikes.
It was then that I thought of Alex. We had said we were friends but he had been more distant than ever. It made me angry and sad. But it had only been two days. I tried to reason with myself. But the other part of me, the part that needed Alex, that longed for him every time we weren't together. That part was in a raging storm of emotional turmoil. Before I could dwell on it any longer I focused back on the order of Adams.
Dragons. The possibility had intrigued me, and as my mind tried to focus on the lesson plan and the amount of neutrons and protons and electrons in Medela, the name and word whispered in the back of my mind. It nagged at my focus, stole my attention away from something that was worth most of my grade.
Dragon. The order of Adams. Dragon. The order of Adams. Dragons? Henry had then debunked the theory as pure fiction, but had later on told me to look out for him on the Washington trip. I had mumbled polite farewells then scurried off to get ready for my next class.
A week later, my head was cleared of all rational thought, and filled only with muses of giant winged beasts and mountains of obsidian rocks. Polished and basked in a faint blue glow, emitted from a permanently orange sun that painted the sky a hazy pink, peach and faint blue.
The roars of giant and minuscule creatures filled the air. Fluttering wings carried through the air. Smoke and steam, twisted and coiled around the great aqua marine pools, where winged blue snake-like bodies swam and sliced through the water with elegant strokes of small hind-leg like limbs.
Orange, black and red dragons cluttered the mountains of obsidian rock. Some had spiked, scaley frills that surrounded their heads like neat mains. Others had jagged spikes that protruded from the tops of their heads. One, however, caught my eyes. It was midnight black. It shifted with the shadows, fiery blue orbs in its eyes.
It’s wings had navy blue scales scattered along its wing span. It’s snout, covered in flecks of white and baby blue. It’s underbelly is the same as it’s snout. I feel elated to see the creature. Like replaceing an old friend again. It’s usual soulless, hard eyes soften when they make contact with me. I look down at myself, but only replace a white shadow that outlines my body shape.
I heard the hushed murmur of students, and faint ring of a bell. Before, I can fully understand what’s happening, my vision is swiftly changed into one of a lonesome, dark house.
The floors are dark onyx and trims of navy blue line everything. Two long halls join the foyer where two dark wood staircases wrapped around either side of the foyer.Bronze door handles, bronze frames. Anything metal is bronze.
The expanse of the house didn’t feel gloomy, or cold. Quite the opposite, light shone through everything, not bright white and blinding, but a soft understated glow. It saturated the darkness, balanced out the gloomier black obsidian with a hazy feel of home.
Two large double doors shone brighter than everything. The bronze handles pulsed with a soft light and energy. The dark panels were carved entirely out of obsidian. Hazy light bounced and gleamed on the panels.
My hand itched to reach out to the knobs. To turn them and walk straight through. An overwhelming longing to see the black dragon with the white and blue speckles again, made me reach out to the knob. The white glow that was my body, moved towards the knobs. An invisible tether pulled me toward it
My very being, wished for me to stay. It pleaded with my mind, begged and nagged for me to forget everything and just stay. To walk straight through those doors and get lost in the room that it held. When my hand was a hair’s breadth away from the knobs my movements halted.
A battle raged in my mind, something in me was desperate to stay, it was like that room contained the last bottle of water on earth. However, another part of me knew I shouldn’t look. Some logical part of me wanted to leave that place.
A burning sensation flooded me with a fueled fire, when I jolted my hand forward and touched the bronze knob.I jerked my hand back and cradled my stinging palm with my other hand.
I had the overwhelming epiphany that I wasn’t supposed to be here. That knowledge brought me to my senses. The entire house, suddenly, didn’t seem so inviting. A faint murmur resounded around the room. The more I listened to the logical part of me, the louder the murmur grew and it became a distinguished calling of my. The more weary I grew of the dark house the dimmer the hazy light faded and the more I felt a tap on my shoulder.
My stomach formed into a twisted knot and my breathing became labored. The roar of my racing heart thrummed in my ears and the air felt like it was being sucked from my lungs. My eyes began to sting.
