Chapter 40: Banished from the City
Clark's voice was so hoarse that it was impossible to discern what he was mumbling.
Giselle opened her mouth to speak, but words failed her in the face of such startling revelation.
Hearing her approach, Clark weakly lifted his head, barely managing to open his eyes to look at her.
Seeing it was Giselle, he gathered all his strength, causing the heavy chains binding him to sway and emit a shrill, grating noise.
"Gi... Giselle..." His voice was a hoarse whisper, barely a breath.
Giselle stepped away from Henry Jefferson's embrace and moved toward her father, reaching out as if to touch his wound.
Henry quickly caught her hand and pulled her back, slipping a pair of oversized finger cots onto her hands while explaining, "They're filthy." Despite the loose fit, Giselle's slender fingers managed to keep the cots in place.
She tentatively poked at her father's wound, eliciting a shudder of pain from him, the chains clinking nonstop.
"No, please, don't... I'm your father, broken bones but still your kin," Clark pleaded desperately.
Giselle scoffed. Only now he claimed they were family-what about when his affair had broken her mother's heart?
That act of betrayal was etched deep in her memory, a reminder of the man who had indirectly killed her mother.
In Giselle's eyes, Clark Lambert had forfeited any right to the roles of husband or father long ago.
Fueled by these thoughts, she pressed harder.
Her index finger forcefully depressed the bridge of his nose, causing him to emit a continuous, ghastly whimpering.
She had always been told she resembled her father, but now, with his nose broken, she saw no trace of that resemblance.
The scene was too gruesome, stirring a wave of nausea in her. She ripped off the finger cots, discarded them, and hurried out of the room.
As she passed Cynthia, the woman's lifeless eyes seemed to scream silent curses at her.
Giselle only afforded her a fleeting glance, unable to stomach the sight of Cynthia's disfigured face.

She was aware of Henry's harsh methods and knew Cynthia deserved her fate, yet she hadn't anticipated such ruthlessness.
It made her wonder if Henry might one day turn that cruelty on her.
It was clear she needed to accelerate her plans to leave.
Henry followed silently behind her, then, picking the perfect moment, scooped her up from behind and carried her out of the room in a princess hold.
Once they were outside, the stench of blood faded, and a wave of relief washed over Giselle.
She rested her head on Henry's shoulder, glancing back at the room one last time.
"What's on your mind?" Henry asked.
She blinked away her discomfort before replying hesitantly, "What are you planning to do with them?"
"Up to you," he responded, his voice deep and measured.

"Oh?" He raised an eyebrow, not surprised by her suggestion. "Why?"
"Killing them here would be bad luck," Giselle frowned, her voice tinged with revulsion. "The debts Clark has racked up are enough to doom them."
Having been beaten and broken, Clark and his family would now be hounded like rats in the streets, doomed to a brief and miserable existence until death inevitably claimed them-retribution for the arrogance he once flaunted by bringing his mistress home.
Henry nodded in what seemed like approval, perhaps even admiration. "Okay."
He pulled out a communicator with one hand, tapped it twice, and issued a command to Assistant Cooper, "Toss the Lambert family out and alert his creditors. Keep them posted on their whereabouts."
With these arrangements made, Henry carried Giselle to the dining room for breakfast.
"Can I still go to school?" Giselle asked tentatively.
"Of course, I'll arrange extra security," Henry assured her as he handed her a glass of milk.
Giselle's shoulders slumped as she sadly sipped her milk.
She loathed the idea of being under surveillance. Now, thanks to her father and his disgraceful actions, her chances of escaping had grown even slimmer
