Chapter 5 The Housekeeper Incident

Camila had a feeling that Maxwell was angry. She regretted trying to help him save money. He didn’t appreciate it at all.

Listening to the sound of running water, Camila felt sleepy.

She put away the card, took two medicine pills for her cold, changed into her pajamas, and got into bed, using the quit to separate the bed into two parts.

Camila slept near the wall, leaving the other side for Maxwell.

She wanted to wait for Maxwell to come out and talk to him, but perhaps due to the medicine, she quickly fell asleep.

Maxwell dawdled over his bath and didn’t come out until a long time later.

Half asleep, Camila felt the bed sink suddenly. However, she was too sleepy to open her eyes and soon fell back to sleep. She dreamed of her grandmother.

In her dream, Camila hugged Gemma tightly, just like when she was a kid.

Gemma’s embrace was warm, with the pleasant fragrance of shower gel, making Camila feel extremely relaxed.

However, Gemma seemed to be rejecting Camila, trying to push her away. Yet the more Gemma pushed, the tighter Camila held on.

In the early morning, Maxwell was still awake. There was an “octopus” clutching him, making it impossible for him to fall asleep.

Maxwell had thought about throwing Camila out several times, but he held back the urge when he heard her calling “Grandma” in her dream.

That night, Maxwell felt more exhausted than after working all night.

The next morning.

Maxwell got up and went to work.

Camila was still asleep, probably due to the medicines she’d taken.

At that moment, Raven came in to bring Maxwell a freshly ironed suit.

“Mr. Starling, has Ms. Lambert woken up?” Raven glanced into the bedroom.

Raven had intended to recommend her niece, Chloe Laxton, to be Maxwell’s wife.

Chloe was a doctor with a Ph.D. from a foreign prestigious university, and she was very beautiful as well.

However, to Raven’s surprise, Gideon didn’t even consider her niece and decided

to conduct an online selection.

This made Raven very angry.

Last night, Gideon promised to give Camila this house if she got pregnant with

Maxwell’s child.

Because of that, Raven was so upset that she couldn’t get any sleep.

She tossed and turned in bed, thinking that such a good thing should have happened to Chloe.

So, early in the morning, Raven came over under the pretext of delivering the clothes to see whether Maxwell and Camila had consummated their marriage last

night.

Maxwell, with dark circles under his eyes, listlessly took the clothes and paid no attention to what Raven said.

Through the crack of the door, Raven only saw a fair arm extending outside the

bed.

Plus Maxwell’s tired look, she concluded that the couple must have had a lot of “exercise” last night.

Raven was instantly upset.

“Mr. Starling, some property management guy came yesterday, saying that it’s time to pay the management fees for the second half of the year,” Raven said.

“About this kind of stuff, you should talk to Camila from now on.”

“But…”

Raven wanted to say something, but seeing Maxwell’s impatient look, she thought better of it.

Not long after Maxwell left, Raven lifted the quilt and woke Camila up.

“Ms. Lambert, it’s time to get up and make breakfast.”

Camila rubbed her eyes and was startled to see Raven standing with a fierce look at the bedside.

“Raven, you scared me!” Camila sat up from the bed. “Can you knock on the door before coming in next time?”

“You sleep like a pig. Would you hear me knock?” Raven argued.

“Don’t you think it’s rude to barge in like this?” Camila had never seen such a domineering housekeeper before. Raven didn’t seem like a housekeeper, but more like a hateful boss.

“Fine, I won’t do it again.” Raven rolled her eyes. “Who will cook breakfast this morning?”

“Who cooked breakfast before?” asked Camila.

“Of course, it was me. But this morning, I asked Mr. Starling, and he said that from now on, you will be responsible for cooking.”

Camila was confused.

Maxwell hadn’t mentioned this to her.

Besides, this housekeeper was hired for 1,500 dollars. Didn’t she even cook?

Camila looked at Raven and asked, “If I cook, what will you do?”

“What I do is none of your business. Just do your job.”

“Fine, you can give me half of your salary, and I’ll cook every day.”

Camila didn’t know why Raven was giving her a hard time or whether this was Maxwell’s order, but she wouldn’t indulge Raven’s attitude.

Raven immediately flew into a rage.

“Why should I give you my salary? Making you cook is Mr. Starling’s idea, not

mine.”

“In that case, I’ll call Maxwell to confirm it,” Camila said, her face turning cold. “Now please leave. I need to get changed.”

Raven hadn’t expected Camila to be such a tough nut despite Camila’s gentle

appearance.

After Raven left, Camila got up, got dressed, and went to the kitchen.

The kitchen was large, just like the kitchen of a five–star hotel.

Camila had been cooking since she was in her teens, so making breakfast was not difficult for her. She quickly cooked a nutritious breakfast she had learned from the Internet and brought it to Gideon.

Gideon was delighted and praised Camila’s cooking skills.

Raven was furious to see that her plan designed to embarrass Camila ended up helping Camila win Gideon’s compliment.

As Camila left Gideon’s room, Raven followed her out.

“Ms. Lambert…‘

“It’s Mrs. Starling,” Camila said, looking at Raven coldly. She didn’t think this housekeeper deserved 1,500 dollars per month.

Reluctantly, Raven changed her address. “Mrs. Starling, you only cooked breakfast for the two of you. What should I eat then? If I have to take care of my breakfast myself, I’ll demand a raise from Mr. Starling.”

“1,500 dollars should be enough for you to manage three meals a day.” Camila was running late for work, so she didn’t want to waste time on Raven. She turned to

leave.

However, Raven suddenly grabbed Camila’s arm and said in a sobbing voice, “Mrs. Starling, you can’t do this to me…”

“Get your hands off me.” Camila was bewildered by Raven’s behavior. She tried to break her arm free, but unexpectedly, Raven fell backward.

To an onlooker, it looked like Camila had pushed Raven.

Camila turned around and saw Maxwell striding over. He helped Raven up from the floor.

“Raven is no longer young. Why did you have to resort to violence? Can’t you talk things out?” Maxwell’s face grew darker.

Camila instantly realized that Raven must have seen Maxwell return and staged the scene to frame her.

“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Maxwell’s face became darker when he saw Camila didn’t even bother to explain.

“I didn’t push her; she fell by herself,” Camila defended herself. The housekeeper was too devious.

“Mr. Starling, she’s lying.” Raven’s eyes were slightly red, and she looked aggrieved. She could win an Oscar Award for her acting skills.

“What exactly happened?” Maxwell snapped.

“Mr. Starling, to impress your grandpa, Ms. Lambert told me she would be responsible for cooking from now on this morning. She also said since I didn’t have to cook anymore, she would reduce my salary by half. You know about my financial situation. My son is still in high school…”

Maxwell figured out the situation. He remembered Camila complaining last night about the high salary of the housekeeper and wanting to replace Raven.

“Come with me!” Maxwell pulled Camila into the car at the entrance. He didn’t want Gideon to hear them quarreling.

“I know you want to replace Raven, but this isn’t the right way to do it.”
