Heartstrings on Fire (Agnes and Jared) -
Chapter 686
Agnes took a deep breath to steady herself before stepping out of the car, feigning a calm demeanor, "What can I do for you, Mr. Whitfield?"
Perfect. She could still call him Mr. Whitfield with such icy indifference.
"Agnes, what's the meaning of having a one-night stand then disappearing on me?" Jared suddenly spoke up.
Agnes was taken aback, not expecting Jared to be so blunt. His words made her feel as if he was playing the innocent victim.
"If I recall correctly," Agnes retorted, "it was you who forced yourself on me that night. My not reporting you is already an act of mercy. So, there's no 'having a one-night stand' situation, Mr. Whitfield. You sure know how to evade responsibility."
"Yes, initially, I forced you. But don't tell me that you didn't want it afterwards, Agnes. We didn't just do it once or twice. I remember quite clearly how engrossed you were."
Jared leaned in close to Agnes, his voice a seductive whisper, "If you've forgotten, I wouldn't mind helping you remember."
"Jared, you...!" Agnes' face flushed red with fury. She was genuinely angered by Jared's audacity and his hot breath tickling her ear.
She pushed Jared away, "Jared, we're both adults. What's the big deal about losing control once in a while? What do you want from me, money?"

Jared fixed his gaze on Agnes, his eyes sharp as daggers. But she met his gaze with an equally defiant look, her expression nonchalant.
"Agnes, have you become so easy with men?" Jared asked.
Agnes chuckled, "Jared, I'm not sure why you're here today. You forced me that night and now you're using it to insult me. Is that your purpose? You want to know why I didn't resist you afterwards, because I'm still hung up on you? Is that what you want to confirm? No, it's simply because you were so good I couldn't resist. Is that the answer you're looking for, Jared?"
Agnes knew what Jared was getting at. But she had her pride. What good would admitting do now?
Yes, she had lost herself in the moment, she even remembered whispering 'I love you' into his ear. But what were they to each other now? He had a fiancée and a mistress. She was just one of many women to him - a stubborn and somewhat resentful ex-wife. Agnes didn't want to be another one of his conquests.
That night was a mistake, one she deeply regretted. She couldn't afford to get any further involved with him.
Jared's face hardened, "Very well, Agnes. That's a good answer." His voice was so cold it sent chills down her spine.
Without another word, Jared turned and drove away. Watching his black Bentley disappear into the distance, Agnes felt a heavy weight settle in her heart. They couldn't have a proper conversation. But even if they could, what would it change?
Agnes was filled with a deep sense of loss. And faintly, she heard the sound of footsteps behind her...
