Jared was utterly shell-shocked. He'd never expected this.

He had no way to investigate the past events as they were confessed by Alyssa herself.

Yet, he'd never imagined that the entire scenario was orchestrated by Laura.

Turns out, everything was just a massive misunderstanding.

And the irony was, they had parted ways for four years, suffered for four years, all because of this misunderstanding.

Shock, anger, rage all of it morphed into silence in that moment.

Jared almost wanted to laugh.

Finally, he squeezed out a few cold words through gritted teeth, "I'd love to rip apart that wicked woman. Eight years in prison is too lenient for her."

Agnes lowered her head.

She'd never thought about the day she'd have to tell Jared the truth.

Jared grabbed Agnes' hand.

He enveloped her hand in his own, "Agnes, fate has kept us apart for so long. Don't you want all the tormenting to stop? I know you still love me, I can feel it. Let's stop torturing each other. Now that the wicked woman has been punished, there's nothing standing in our way, right?"

Jared never believed that Agnes had no feelings for him.

If she didn't, they wouldn't lock horns and hurt each other every time they met.

If she didn't, she wouldn't have given birth to Nocturne.

If she didn't, she wouldn't have confessed her love for him that night in a moment of weakness.

Jared had a feeling, Agnes wasn't that heartless.

Agnes spoke up, "Jared, it's been four years. Do you think we can go back to the way we were?"

"We can. I can." Jared responded calmly.

"But I can't." Agnes finally lifted her gaze, looking into Jared's eyes with an eerie calm.

It was as if a flicker of hope was extinguished in Jared's eyes.

In a calm voice, Agnes said, "Yes, there's no hate between us now, but there are four years of irreplaceable memories and the people who entered our lives during these years. Jared, ask yourself, can you easily let go of these people? If we reconcile at their expense, how are we different from the heartless villains?"

Agnes wanted to hear Jared's explanation.

Over the years, he had been with lots of women. What about the women in his life?

Were there any he truly cherished?

They couldn't just disregard everything and get back together without a second thought.

But that wasn't what Jared was thinking about.

He didn't understand Agnes' words.

Was Agnes rejecting him?

She mentioned not being heartless, the four years and the people who appeared in their lives.

Was she talking about Ryder?

The thought of Ryder was like a dagger plunging into Jared's heart.

Jared didn't even want to bring him up.

He suggested getting back together while deliberately ignoring this aspect.

Deep down, Jared hoped that his place in Agnes' heart would make her give up that relationship, while pretending not to care was out of the question.

But he could try not to mind it.

Compared to the past, he wanted to have her future more.

But Jared felt as if he had overestimated his importance in Agnes' heart.

With a sigh, Jared said, "I'm not forcing you to make a decision right now. But I hope you'll think about it. After all, Nocturne needs his father."

A bitter laugh formed in Jared's mind. He had stooped so low as to use Nocturne as a bargaining chip for reconciliation.

It was truly pathetic.
