“I studied abroad. It’s not surprising that we crossed paths.”

Taking on a professorship? Sonny is just a lazy bum living his retirement life in a city abroad.

“I heard that the country hasn’t found a breakthrough in AIDS treatment. What if your hospital takes thelead?” Elspeth made an enticing offer.

“AIDS? It’s an incurable disease. Girl, you are too young. Putting aside the legitimacy of yourrelationship with Sonny Schwartz, you have to know that no one could cure AIDS after so many years.You’re making it up just to get into the operating room.” The doctor looked gleeful for seeing throughElspeth’s “trick,” or at least that was what she thought.

“I am not bluffing. The treatment for AIDS has gone through new developments overseas, and we havecases of full recovery. Doctor, I believe you know right from wrong. If I go in there and save a life, notonly will you save a patient, but you will also open up a new opportunity for the hospital, and for that,you would be promoted accordingly. Elspeth calculated the pros and cons, and the doctor seemed to sway in front of the offer as she shot alook at Callum, waiting for him to say something.

An eternity later, the operating room sign was still turned on. The hospital staff went in and out multipletimes to deliver medicinal herbs.

Two hours later, the operating room sign was finally switched off. Callum’s mind snapped back to realityas he stared intensely at the closely shut door, awaiting the exit of Elspeth and the doctors.

The door was opened, and Elspeth emerged first, looking tired and walking with an unsteady gait. Sheseemed to have overexerted herself, but he could not read her expression.

“Elspeth, how did it go?”

She stared into his eyes and beamed. “He’s safe.”

She rolled her eyes at him. “I am the only one who knows his condition the best because I operated onhim. A nurse does not know how to spot his adverse reaction if there’s any. If they miss the best time torespond, Blake would be in trouble.”

Although she was right, her explanation made him uneasy. “Why do you care for him so much?”

Staring at him, she couldn’t help but snicker, “He got hurt when he saved me from Ophelia. Even if Ihave to give up my life, I will still save him.”

“You said you saw me hugging Alaina. Could you tell me who you were with at that time?”

Elspeth’s silence confirmed his suspicion. “You were with Blake, right?”

Her silence was equal to admission. She did not want to argue with him. Not long after, Blake waswheeled out, and she followed him into his ward without as much as giving Callum another look.

Callum, who got left behind, was taken aback and speechless.

In the ward, Elspeth looked at Blake with guilt. His eyes were tightly shut, and his lips were pale.

Had she not sent him the text, he would have been filming happily on the set instead of lying in thepatient’s

bed lifelessly right now.

Since she had used the best herbs for hemorrhage and created a detox prescription from SonnySchwartz’s teaching, Blake should have been awake by now.

Why is he still unconscious?

As if he heard her thoughts, Blake stirred in the bed. His fingers trembled a little, and he opened hiseyes in the next second. “Elspeth…”

After he confirmed that Elspeth was fine-other than looking exhausted-he felt more reassured.“Nothing. I just wanted to know if you’re okay. I’m relieved now.”

She rolled her eyes at him. “That is not a valid reason to save me and endanger yourself! You’re anadult, Blake! Can’t you take good care of yourself? Why would you save someone who has nothing todo with you?”

Her mind went blank when she heard the confession.

“Okay now. You must still be in recovery and not in your right mind. We can discuss this again whenyou’re feeling better. Are you thirsty? I’ll get you some water.” She dodged the topic of conversationand got up to leave. However, she bumped into Callum at the door. He had a long face and appearedto be in a foul mood.

“Look after him for me. I’ll be back soon.” She waved the mug in her hand awkwardly, but Callum didnot reply. After she left, Callum and Blake were the only ones left in the ward.

With a sour face, Callum glanced at Blake and blurted out, “I overheard your entire confession justnow.”

Blake was not embarrassed at all. With a smile, he looked at Callum and said, “What’s wrong, Callum?I’m confessing to the girl I love. I’m not forcing Elspeth to be with me. Why the long face?”

“You knew that she is your future sister-in-law.”

Blake flashed him a sarcastic smile. “In the past, I would have believed that you would treat her well.But from the moment I saw how upset she looked in the past few days because of you, I finally realizedthat my assumption was wrong. I should’ve never backed out. She will never be happy with you.”
