Chapter 630 Someone Came To Pick Me Up
Finished.
Maverick gazed at Lysander, his eyes brimming with reluctance. His voice was filled with emotion. “Having such an exceptional daughter like you is the proudest achievement of my life. Even though it has. been many years since you got into medical school, my old buddies are still envious every time I mention it”
Maverick always regarded Lysander as his pride and joy. With a nostalgic tone, he confessed, “I know I’m vain, but I can’t help bragging about you wherever I go. After all, my Lysa is just that amazing.”
Lysander attempted to squeeze out a smile to reassure him, but as soon as the corners of her mouth began to lift, her eyes welled up with tears. It took all her strength to hold them back.
Maverick understood her thoughts and gently said, “Honestly, I have been at peace for a while now. I’ve been quite content these last few days. If there’s anything I’m worried about, it’s that you might be so focused on taking care of your mother and sister that you forget you’re still a young girl who needs care herself.”
“Dad, I’m almost thirty. I’ve grown up a long time ago…” After Lysander had barely managed to utter these words, she broke down completely the next second. She collapsed in front of him, crying uncontrollably.
Maverick’s strength was nearly depleted, yet he managed to lift his hand to gently stroke her hair, just as he used to when she was a little girl. “Even if one day you’re in your seventies or eighties, to me, you’ll always be my little girl.”
“Okay, don’t cry, Lysa. As a doctor, you should understand the cycle of life and death better than anyone.
after I’m Everyone will face this day, and I am fortunate to depart without any regrets. Just promise me, gone, you will take good care of yourself. Don’t overwork yourself.”
He had barely spoken a few words when his throat began to tighten intermittently. If he hadn’t been at death’s door, he might have been unable to hold back his tears.
The door to the ICU was pushed open from the outside amidst Lysander’s cries.
Josiah stood by the door, casting a glance at the father–daughter duo. With a hidden sorrow he couldn’t conceal, he stepped aside, making room for Michelle to push in Laura, who sat in the wheelchair.
Laura had only fainted for a brief moment before she woke up, fueled by her concern for her husband. However, the news that greeted her was devastating, leaving her no choice but to let her daughter guide her to her husband’s sickbed.
Laura completely fell apart. “You jerk! Why didn’t you tell me?”
When Maverick saw his wife’s haggard appearance, so different from her daytime self, he felt guilty. “I’m sorry, Laura,” he said. “I know there should be no secrets between a husband and wife, but I was truly afraid of seeing you crying. Please, forgive me this once.”
“Maverick, I’m not blaming you, but why, just why…”
Maverick reached out, gently taking Laura’s hand and softly said, “If I had known that our marriage would lead to so many years of hardship, perhaps I shouldn’t have pursued you. Maybe you and the children would have been happier than you are now. But it’s too late to say these things. All I can do now is to delay your sorrow a bit longer. Promise me you’ll be okay.”

managed to grasp his hand as he reached out to gently touch her face.
“We’ve been married for so many years, and when haven’t you put me and the children first? You wouldn’t even buy new shoes when yours were falling apart. If anyone should apologize, it should be me. I should have paid more attention to you, then I wouldn’t have only just noticed now…”
Maverick held Laura and Lysander’s hands, his gaze resting on his younger daughter, Michelle.
Michelle knew her father had something to say to her, so she desperately held back her sobs. “Dad, don’t worry,” she assured him. “I remember everything you’ve said before. I’ll study hard, work hard, listen to Mom and Lysander, and not give you any more reasons to worry about me…”
“Yes, my little Mich has grown up,” Maverick finally admitted, a tear moistening the corner of his eye. He gestured for his younger daughter to extend her hand, then placed together. “From now on, you two sisters need to support each other, look after each other. Mich, you can’t
chelle and Lysander’s hands be reckless anymore. You need to help Lysander take care of your mother. And Lysander, you shouldn’t always put on a brave front.”
The trio of mother and daughters at the sickbed were reduced to tears by his faltering words.
Josiah stood silently by the side, not reiterating his promise. Instead, he proved himself through his presence.
Maverick glanced at him, his gaze filled with sorrow as he said, “Jose.”
Josiah took a step forward. “Mr. Thorne.”
“From now on, I’m counting on you to take good care of our home, despite the hardships.”
“Yes. Please rest assured.”
After receiving a positive response from Josiah, Maverick finally broke down in tears. His vision gradually blurred, and the words that followed began to become incoherent.
“I can’t stay any longer. I have to leave, someone’s here to pick me up…”
Lysander heard Maverick start to spout nonsense, realizing that he truly couldn’t hold on any longer. She hurriedly tried to catch one last glimpse of him, murmuring, “Dad…”
It was said that when a person was on the brink of death, the last sense to fade was hearing. She hoped that Maverick could pass away peacefully.
“How come a little girl is here? Her family must be incredibly trusting to let her wander off alone…” Maverick stared blankly into the void ahead, his tone suggesting as if a young girl had indeed wandered into the ward.
“Don’t ruin such a pretty little dress. Where are your folks? Oh, I am your family, aren’t I? You’re here to pick up your dear Granddad, right? Okay, then, I will go with you now…”
Lysander and Josiah followed Maverick’s gaze, even though there was seemingly nothing in front of them. Yet, they both felt that he must have seen something beyond the perception of ordinary people.
A little girl? Granddad? That must be…
Suddenly, Josiah clenched his hands tightly.

Lysander also faltered for a moment.
If only there truly was a world after death….
Maverick’s consciousness had reached its limit. He could see nothing but the little girl who had come to meet him. He raised his hand toward the void, uttering his last words in life, “Okay, good girl. Let me hold
you.
In the next moment, his hand fell straight down and his eyes slowly closed, the smile on his face forever captured in that instant.
Lysander quickly reached out to grasp his hand. “Dad…”
No one was responding to her anymore.
No one was hounding her anymore, insisting that she should not associate with Josiah.
Nobody was willing to risk their life to stand up for her anymore.
No one else had ever put forward their entire life savings to fund her overseas education.
No one was there anymore, like when she was a child, holding her small hand with their warm, large palm, reassuring her not to be afraid, that her father would always be the first parent to pick her up from kindergarten and take her home.
Maverick had never broken his word before.
During those early years in kindergarten, he was always the first one to arrive after school cach day.
He stood at the spot closest to the school gates, crouched down with his arms wide open, ready to catch Lysander who rushed into his embrace.
No one could ever hoist her onto their shoulders again, to take her to the liveliest festivals. She would always be the tallest among the crowd.
“Lysander… Lysander…”
Who’s calling me?
Josiah held her tight. “Lysander, are you okay?”
Startled, Lysander regained her composure, turning to look at him.
The hospital room was filled with Laura and Michelle’s cries. The
Lysander couldn’t bring herself to dry. The scenes from the past played out in front of her eyes like a movie.
In an instant, she seemed to transform back into the little girl she once was, only willing to go to school if her father held her hand. With a hazy memory of the past, she looked up at her father’s towering figure, mumbling about her reluctance to go to school.
Her father didn’t chastise her. Instead, he simply bought her a balloon and handed it to her. Then, with a solemn demeanor, he entrusted her to the care of her teacher.

Such a strong–willed individual found himself humbly pleading in front of the teacher on her behalf, “My daughter had a near–drowning incident a while back. Ever since she woke up, she can’t remember anything. She’s become timid and doesn’t like to speak much. I hope you can give her some extra care?
The teacher was a kind soul, who had agreed immediately at the time, even reaching out to pat Lysander’s head. But she had dodged the teacher’s gesture.
Yet, Maverick didn’t reprimand Lysander. Instead, he simply crouched down, gently stroked her hair and said, “Lysa, you need to get along well with your classmates. As soon as school is over, I’ll come pick you up immediately. I promise you, I’ll be the first one here.”
Only then did Lysander nod and follow her teacher into the classroom. However, as her father’s towering figure gradually receded into the distance, she suddenly came to her senses.
It was then that she realized that twenty long years had passed since then.
