From the depths of her heart, she yearned for the day she could see her father again. Thus, she couldn’t bring herself to bid him farewell.

The door across her slowly closed, and concurrently, the electronic display screen hanging beside it lit up, indicating the commencement of the incineration process.

Lysander lifted her head from the now empty glass below her. She tried to stand up, but the very next moment, she felt dizzy, as if the whole world had lost its color.

Before she lost consciousness, she heard an incredibly anxious voice calling. “Lysander.”

By the time Lysander regained consciousness, she found herself lying in a warm and soft place. She vaguely sensed that she was on a bed, but her body was so weakened from overexertion that she couldn’t even open her eyes.

It seemed as though there were people talking nearby, but their voices were indistinct and unclear.

The most noticeable of all was the voice of Josiah. He was naturally gifted with a deep and rich voice, so even when he deliberately lowered his volume, he still had the most distinctive voice in the crowd.

“The doctor mentioned that Lysander is not in danger. Her fainting spell was merely due to excessive sadness and malnutrition that led to a high fever. They’ve already administered an IV drip with nutrients and saline solution. Her colleague, Lynn, also came to visit just now and their accounts of the situation were quite consistent.”

Josiah was discussing Lysander’s situation with someone, his worry apparent despite his best efforts to appear calm.

Hence, Lysander realized her situation; it turned out she had already been sent back to the hospital.

I wonder how Mom and Michelle are doing….

The voices seemed to sound from the corridor. Josiah, Howard, Molly, and Susan were outside, their mood downcast.

Usually, Howard was the picture of refined gentility, rarely displaying such deep distress. He was earnestly reflecting on himself, continuously shaking his head and sighing as he spoke.

“For me, the company no longer mattered. At my age, what is there left to fret over? Regardless of whether Lysa is willing to accept me as her so–called father, it is my responsibility to make up for the past shortcomings, rather than letting her, the whom I’ve wronged, help me.”

Seated in her wheelchair, Molly gently held her husband’s hand. Her voice was much softer as she spoke. “This isn’t solely your fault. If we truly need to make changes, we should bear them together. Remember when I was in the hospital, how you always said we are one, as husband and wife?”

Howard gently tightened his grip on his wife. “Do you also support my decision?

“Of course.” Molly’s eyes were still red–rimmed, but upon hearing her husband’s words, she managed a small smile. “I’ve been through the jaws of death, maybe I see things more clearly than you do,” she said.

The two of them reached an agreement, without a trace of hesitation or conflict in the process.

Josiah had grown up under their watchful eyes, so he naturally understood their temperaments. He knew that once they made up their minds, it was impossible to change it. But given the gravity of the matter, he still felt compelled to confirm with them. “Mr. and Mrs. Thorne, are you absolutely certain about this?”

Molly gently looked at her husband and nodded.

Encouraged, Howard spoke with more conviction than before. “I’ve made up my mind, and I won’t change it again. In life, everything is fleeting, wealth and status can disappear in an instant. What’s most important. is to cherish the people in front of us. If the company is gone, then so be it. I just want Lysa to be happy.”

“Indeed, since Lysa’s dream is to become a doctor, how could we, the two people who constantly claimed to want the best for her, restrain her? All that matters is her health and happiness.”

After falling ill, Molly developed a particular sentiment toward life.

Josiah was deeply moved when he saw them willing to give up the efforts of their lifetime for Lysander. He reassured, “Don’t worry, when Lysander wakes up, I will replace the right moment to tell her about this. However, she is someone who always sees things through once she starts. And considering she has accepted over ten million from the Thorne family, she believes she must repay the favor…”

“What’s this talk of debts among family? This child is just too stubborn, always putting herself last. If she feels burdened, tell her this her mother and I are getting on in years. We don’t want to toil anymore, we just want to live out our days in peace and simplicity with her.”

Anticipating that Lysander might feel guilty, Howard had already prepared his excuses.

Josiah nodded in agreement, promising them that he would give it a try.

Susan was not an outsider to the Thorne family. Upon hearing this, she was moved and said, “It’s truly heartbreaking how much parents care for their children. I just came from Laura’s and Michelle’s place. They are also very worried about Lysander’s situation. If it weren’t for me stopping them, they would have come to see their daughter despite their illness.”

She had known Laura the longest and they got along quite well. They could be considered friends who shared a common language. Thus, it made her the most suitable person to ask these questions.

Upon hearing this, Molly empathized and said, “Laura just lost her husband. If she were to see her eldest daughter faint from weakness, she certainly wouldn’t be able to bear it. How is Michelle doing?”

“The young girl has grown up rather quickly, she is barely recognizable compared to her past self. I was worried she would exhaust herself, and offered to take care of her Laura for a while. But she insisted she’s already an adult and is determined to let her father rest in peace.

As Susan spoke, she couldn’t help but feel her eyes welling up with tears again.

Howard expressed his concern. “She’s still in school. Given the current circumstances, we adults should be the ones to step up.”

He was a man of his word, truly viewing Michelle as his own daughter. His intentions did not waver in the slightest, even after Maverick’s passing.

Upon hearing this, Susan couldn’t help but say, “There truly is a matter now that requires our attention. I’ve asked Laura about it, she doesn’t want her husband to be buried alone in the cemetery. She hopes he can return to his roots, to be buried back in his hometown.”

“The request is fair and reasonable, but isn’t it too much to ask of her in her current state?” Molly was deeply concerned for Laura’s health after replaceing out how soon she was leaving.

Susan let out a sigh, eloquently sharing her plans.

“I’ve tried to persuade her before, but she insists on returning as soon as possible. She said it’s fine as long as Michelle is with her. She mentioned that Lysander is currently running a high fever and is not suitable for her to travel. So, she entrusted us to take care of her. I have no choice but to arrange for a few people. to accompany them, hoping they can be of some help…

She continued to talk about some other matters, but for Lysander, who was feeling faint and lacked the strength to even keep her eyes open, her words were nothing more than vague background noise.

So, my mother and sister preparing to embark on a journey back to our hometown with my father’s ashes.

Upon hearing this, Lysander’s heart, which had been hanging in her dreams, finally felt significantly lighter. She let out the breath that had been held in her chest, intending to allow herself to fall into a deep sleep. However, for some reason, her eyelids, which had felt too heavy to lift before, now seemed not as heavy.
