After finishing his water, Rhizone pondered deeply. In the end, he conceded, “All right, I’ll go with you.”
They retraced their steps from the previous night, taking the shortest path since there was no need to hide anymore. Before long, they found themselves back near the lake.
By then, the villagers had either gone home or were giving their statements next to the police car. Only the police and Carol’s group remained at the scene.
Lysander was immediately stopped by a stern–faced police officer the minute she got near the lake. “We’re conducting an investigation here, so bystanders should keep their distance for now.”
The warning tape was stretched out extensively, effectively blocking off nearly all the spots where one could enter the water.
Lysander’s anxiety surged: “I’m looking for someone.”
Right after she spoke, Carol, who was anxiously watching the police inspecting the lake on boats, turned toward Lysander. She quickly stepped forward to explain to the police. “She’s not a stranger. She’s our CEO, Mr. Guerra’s wife.”
Rhizone found the title somewhat familiar. However, his concern for Josiah at that moment took precedence, so he didn’t think further about it.
Lysander knew that only family members could stay at the scene at a time like that, so she avoided answering directly. “I’m here to replace Josiah. We parted ways in this vicinity last night.”
Rhizone had already explained the detailed circumstances to the police once, so she didn’t need to repeat it.
Upon receiving a definite answer, the policeman’s expression relaxed a bit. “Perfect timing, Mrs. Guerra. We happen to need your assistance with identifying something.”
The word “identifying” involuntarily made Lysander clench her hands. It brought to mind something that sent chills down her spine.
Carol felt the same..
They walked to the side, following the police officer.
Fortunately, no stretchers covered with white cloth were there.
The police officer took an evidence bag from his colleague. Holding it in his hand, he asked, “Mrs. Guerra, do you recognize this ring? Is it something that belongs to your husband?”
It’s been a long time since I’ve heard someone address me as such.
Lysander gazed at the ring, shimmering under the sunlight, replaceing herself at a loss for words.
Josiah’s wedding ring was in the evidence bag.
She had thrown away her ring along with the piece of her heart that had died. Unexpectedly, Josiah’s was not only intact, but he also carried it with him, keeping it safely until then.

The police officer noticed the redness around Lysander’s eyes and knew the answer to his question. However, he didn’t press her to confirm it.

Taking a deep breath to calm down, Lysander nodded and said, “Yes, I recognize it. This was once our wedding ring.”
The police didn’t delve into her use of past tense. After receiving a positive confirmation, they proceeded with their investigation, leaving behind a few individuals related to Josiah waiting on the sidelines.
Carol approached Lysander and asked with concern. “Are you alright, Mrs. Guerra?”
“I’m fine.” Lysander said. “I just didn’t expect him to keep the ring. Our marriage is already over. I thought it would have been put aside by now.”
A wedding ring wasn’t like any other ordinary jewelry.
Carol explained softly, “The wedding ring. Mr. Guerra has always carried it with him. He was afraid that you might recall the past if you saw it, so he dared not wear it on his finger. Instead, he had me prepare a velvet pouch to store it in, which he kept in the inner pocket of his suit.”
Lysander didn’t respond and simply lifted her gaze toward the tranquil surface of the water.
Josiah has truly kept this secret well, so much so that I only discover it now. We can at least leave on good terms if there is still a chance for a face–to–face meeting.
In a raspy voice, Lysander asked Carol, “It’s been such a long time. Is there no news at all?”
Carol shook her head with a troubled expression. “No, the police have searched everywhere they could in the vicinity. They even brought in the canines, but still, they couldn’t replace any trace of Mr. Guerra. As for the lake…”
She sighed before continuing. “The situation here is complex, especially beneath the water. The police still haven’t figured it out yet.”
Rhizone was never one for many words, but at that moment, he bravely volunteered, “Let me go check it. I’m a good swimmer, and I grew up here. Everyone knows I can swim back and forth here several times without tiring
They couldn’t decide it themselves, so they first sought out the police officers to discuss the probability of the option.
Upon learning that Rhizone wasn’t even ten years old, the police completely disapproved of the idea. However, after consulting with the nearby villagers and discovering that his swimming skills surpassed even some adults, they finally agreed to let him try.
Lysander and Carol waited anxiously by the shore, watching Rhizone enter the restricted area with the police.
Roughly half an hour later, Rhizone emerged from the depths of the lotus blossoms and swam back to shore. Those waiting on shore quickly helped him out of the water when they caught his pale face and grim expression.
The police officer was the first to ask, “Well, did you notice anything unusual down there?”
Rhizone glanced at Lysander, then with a shaken voice, he said, “I–I think I saw a person submerged.

underwater, at the very bottom, entangled by the lotus roots.”
A person at the bottom of the lake could only be…. a corpse.

The police promptly dispatched additional personnel to search the area Rhizone pointed out. Even the police who were assigned elsewhere were called back.
In an instant, the shore had descended into chaos.
The villagers hurriedly gathered upon receiving the news, all praying that the person beneath the water wasn’t Josiah.
Mr. Guerra is a good man. He had only been in the village for a few days but had already done so much for everyone. Justice doesn’t exist if he loses his life here because of those bad people.
At first, Lysander didn’t react much. No one knew if she hadn’t heard clearly or didn’t understand.
A moment later, her world turned upside down. Everything within her sight began to spin wildly. Thankfully, Carol was quick to steady her, preventing her from falling.
Carol was worried. “Mrs. Guerra, you must stay strong. The person beneath… might not be…”
She was, after all, significantly older than them. Even if she was panicking internally, she still appeared more composed. However, she was hesitant to voice the most horrible outcome.
Lysander gritted her teeth and steadied herself, whispering to Carol very softly, “I don’t believe it. This
can’t be.”
At times like these, what one can’t afford to lose is the spirit they hold inside their heart.
Neither spoke again and simply stood waiting by the shore with the others. Just as they were about to become statues from the long wait, the boat that the police officers took to dove into the lake with Rhizone returned.
They didn’t disembark on Lysander’s and the others‘ side but instead chose a spot on the opposite end.
The first to disembark from the boat were two police officers. Once they had steadied themselves, they paused, turned around to help their colleague carry a dark–colored bag, and sat it down to the side.
Anyone who worked in a hospital would recognize the bag–it was a body bag
Before, Lysander was constantly on edge, her heart pounding so hard it felt like it would leap out of her chest. Surprisingly, she was calm upon witnessing the scene from afar.
Soon, another police officer rushed over, his expression conflicted as he said to Lysander, “Mrs. Guerra, could you please come with us? We need your assistance with something.”
He didn’t specify what it was, but Lysander had a clear understanding of what he was asking. She appeared so nonchalant that it was almost abnormal. “Okay.”
