His Ex wife is a billionaire Chapter 138
Chapter 138
Thaddeus stumbled out of the study, pale as a ghost. He felt like his chest was about to cave in.
He realized that Evadne was like a painful scar on his b*dy, one he dared not touch. The slightest touch would send a jolt of pain through him as if his b*dy was about to break
apart.
But what he feared to remember more than Evadne herself was the fact that she once loved him.
Thaddeus had always been a proud man, even as a child. Despite his experiences with hunger and poverty, he never allowed himself to lose his dignity or bow down to anyone. “Mr. Thaddeus,” Gordon rushed up to him, “I have three things to report.”
“Go on.” Thaddeus tried to steady himself, a thin layer of sweat forming on his forehead.
“First, Ms. Acacia is awake but not doing well. She’s been demanding to see you.”
Thaddeus‘ eyes darkened, “And the second?”
“The chairman has found a kick–a** lawyer for Elspeth. She’ll be released tomorrow morning. Word is, her cousin Earl has taken all the blame, and Elspeth is in the clear.” Gordon lowered his voice, sounding disgruntled.
“What’s the lawyer’s name?” Thaddeus frowned.
“Cedric Dempsey.”
Thaddeus inwardly cursed. Frederic was cunning indeed, managing to rope in the famous Cedric.
Gordon stepped closer, “Funny thing is, this Cedric is the brother of Mrs. Abernathy’s male secretary, Jason Dempsey. It turns out that Jason is the baby of the Dempsey family! Hard to believe, huh?”
A flicker of surprise crossed Thaddeus‘ eyes.
Though the Dempsey family wasn’t high society, they held high prestige in the legal field. The patriarch, Dave Dempsey, was a renowned judge known for his fairness. He had three sons. The eldest son Cedric had been a legal consultant for two big companies, never losing a case. The second son, Ivan, was also a strict and fair judge.
As for Jason, the youngest Dempsey, he seemed ordinary on the surface. But a closer look at his impressive resume would leave anyone gobsmacked.
He attended a prestigious law school, and he was the youngest doctoral graduate in law. He could have used his good looks to charm the ladies, but he dedicated himself to studies instead, earning a full scholarship and top grades in all subjects.
Yet such a talent was content to serve as Evadne’s secretary, acting like a glorified nanny.
He shouldn’t underestimate the people around Evadne.
A bitter taste rose in Thaddeus‘ mouth. He only said, “It was inevitable that Elspeth would be released. But she can forget about joining the Board of Directors. That door is sealed shut.”
“Mrs. Abernathy is amazing! She almost crushed the opposition with one move! Mr. Thaddeus, one way or another, we’ve gained a lot thanks to Mrs. Abernathy!” Gordon said, rubbing his hands together in glee.
Thaddeus gave him a cold look. “If you admire her so much, why don’t you go join her?”
Gordon was speechless.
“I’ve had many victories before but I’ve never seen you this excited. You should remember who’s paying your salary.”
Gordon couldn’t say a word.
“What’s the third thing?”
“Oh! The man who was with Mrs. Abernathy that night, I found out who he is! You won’t believe it!” Gordon started to build suspense.
Thaddeus‘ eyes flashed with cold light. “Who is he?”
“He’s the youngest son of the chairman of the Chambers Group, Avery! He’s been living in Helgen and just returned to Elmsworth a few days ago!”
Avery? The Chambers Group?
Thaddeus felt a jolt in his heart.
The Chambers Group had half of the projects in Elmsworth. There was a saying among the business circles that the Abernathy family ruled the south while the Chambers family ruled the north.
Both families had billions of a**ets, with a river acting as a boundary. They seemed to keep to their own territories but their rivalry never ceased.
Thaddeus had heard long ago that the K Group and the Chambers Group had collaborated on several large projects domestically and internationally. The two chairmen were old pals, knowing each other for twenty years.
So, Evadne and Avery knew each other from way back?
He thought of the way they looked at each other, as if no one else existed. Could it be that they were childhood sweethearts?
Gordon sighed in envy, “Well, it’s not hard to understand. Mrs. Abernathy comes from a prestigious family. She’s Emeric’s favorite daughter! Everyone around her is a top–notch talent. Look at Jason, the youngest son of the Dempsey family, he’s only fit to be Mrs. Abernathy’s a**istant.”
He sneered, glancing at his boss, feeling sorry for him.
Even though Mr. Thaddeus was now the CEO and soon to be the vice–chairman of the Board of Directors, his achievements paled in comparison to his wife, Evadne.
Wouldn’t that make him the envy of countless people?
Thaddeus‘ jawline tightened, a vein throbbing on his forehead. He leaned against the wall, slowly clenching his hand into a fist.
Looking at these men from prestigious families. What exactly was that woman trying to do?
The man pinched the bridge of his nose, his voice trembling, “Gordon, fetch my headache pills.”
Elsewhere.

At night, a dark green Rolls Royce silently pulled up in front of the Black Room,
The so–called Black Room was an unfinished building purchased by the K Group years ago in Wye. It was tucked away in a remote location, but Emeric was shrewd. He heard that Wye would have a subway in five years, and the building would quickly appreciate in value, so he bought it.
The building had a dark and damp basement. If anyone got locked up here, it would be pure hell.
Since Ca**ius knew about this, there was no way he would let his little sister face it alone. So, he came along with Evadne tonight.
“Sir, ma’am.” Two guards standing watch outside bowed politely.
“How’s the guy?” Evadne asked in a lazy tone.
“He’s still alive.”
Those words seemed loaded with meaning.
Evadne nodded in satisfaction. She walked down the stairs into the basement with her brother.
The moment they stepped in, a musty, foul smell hit their noses, and a rat scurried past Evadne’s feet.
However, Evadne didn’t change her expression. She’d experienced far worse conditions during her time as a Doctors Without Borders volunteer.
Under the dim and flickering light, George’s nose was bruised and swollen, and he was hung upside down in the middle of the room. Due to the long hours in that position, his face was red and swollen, severely congested.
Seeing the two appear, he curled up like a cocoon, his snot and tears running in reverse, pleading, “I was wrong. I was wrong! Ms. Evadne, please spare me! I’m willing to do anything!”
He had seemed quite tough when he was threatening her. Evadne thought he was a hard nut to crack, but he broke down just three days later.
Ca**ius frowned, his b*dy slightly moving, but was quickly stopped by Evadne.
“Didn’t we agree when we came here? I’ll handle this guy, and you can’t back out now.”
“Fine.” Ca**ius took a deep breath. Suppressing his rage, he retreated half a step.
Evadne crossed her arms, strode up to George, lifted her slender leg, and kicked his shoulder hard with her stiletto heel.
His b*dy swayed in the air, and he felt like puking.
“Ms. Evadne. I really didn’t know. If I’d known it was you, I wouldn’t have listened to that wicked Acacia and lay a finger on you!”
George was filled with regret, his snot nearly reaching his eyes. “I’m willing to atone. I’ll do anything! Please give me a chance to live! I’m willing to go to jail!”
“If you want to live, answer a few of my questions.” Evadne cut to the chase.
“Ask away! I’ll tell you everything I know.”
A cold light flashed in Evadne’s eyes. “As Acacia’s lover, do you know if she’s ever had a child?”
