Chapter 259

Thaddeus didn’t have time to dwell on the shock.

The cliff beneath him was collapsing!

“Ilana! Quick!”

In his panic, Thaddeus blurted out a name he hadn’t spoken in years.

Evadne’s pupils shrunk as her heart pounding wildly.

This call mysteriously injected her with a strange strength that allowed her to scramble to the edge of the cliff at the last moment, throwing herself into Thaddeus‘ arms.

With a tightening grip, he held her as tight as he could.

Boom!

In the last second before the collapse, Thaddeus shielded Evadne with his b*dy and rolled away at an incredible speed, narrowly escaping disaster.

“Uh!” He grunted in pain as his back slammed into a rock. The impact sent a cold sweat down his face, quickly blending with the rain.

“Are you hurt?” Evadne lifted her head from his chest, her eyes filled with worry as she looked at his pale face.

“No.” Thaddeus suppressed the pain, not giving away any signs of discomfort in his deep voice.

Evadne, still shaken, let her soaked b*dy collapse against his heaving chest, taking a deep breath.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Thaddeus looked at her, his wet lashes heavy upon his eyes, his voice hoarse.

“What?” Evadne’s heart fluttered as she avoided his intense gaze.

“Why didn’t you tell me our first encounter was thirteen years ago? Why didn’t you tell me you were the girl I saved here all those years ago?”

Thaddeus struggled to get the words out between his heavy breaths. The intense bitterness and heartache intermingled, threatening to corrode his insides.

Evadne’s throat tightened and her face turned white as she realized. He remembered everything.

So when he suddenly called her llana? Was it because he remembered?

Why did he remember at that moment?

Why did his realization come thirteen years too late?

It was too late, far too late. She would rather he never remembered who she was.

Tell me, Evadne. Speak up!”

Unable to control his emotions, Thaddeus gripped Evadne’s chin, forcing her to meet his fiery gaze.

“Why I would marry you in the name of Ilana, do you remember?” Evadne looked at him with dark eyes, her heart shrinking.

Thaddeus‘ face changed, her piercing words causing him pain.

He, of course, remembered.

When he saved her, he asked for her name. She didn’t respond so he gave her a name, “Ilana“.

However, Thaddeus never imagined that the girl he saved as a joke, would appear in his life again thirteen years later as his wife.

And she had kept it a secret, never letting it sl*p.

“Huh, seems like you do remember.”

Evadne laughed lightly, “Honestly, you didn’t need to remember. I never hoped that you would. After all, I was always just a passerby in your life. Whether it was thirteen years ago, three years ago, or now, it’s the same.”

Thaddeus‘ breath hitched.

Although he didn’t do anything wrong, he felt guilty. He saved her, yes, but he also forgot her.

This girl had been thinking about him for thirteen years, yet he turned his back on her.

She tried to fit into his world, but he coldly shut her out, cruelly closing his heart to her.

“I’m sorry.”

Thaddeus‘ voice quivered, his throat choked, “I genuinely didn’t know that you were that girl. If I had known.”

“Even if you knew, you would still divorce me, wouldn’t you?”

Evadne laughed, letting go of her regrets. She had no lingering attachment to him, ‘Whether I am Evadne or llana, it’s just a name. It doesn’t change the relationship between us. And, you don’t need to apologize. Instead, I should be thanking you. After you saved me, you left. I didn’t know your name, your identity, and never got the chance to thank you.”

Evadne. If that’s the case, why did you marry me?

This was what Thaddeus wanted to know. It was the thought that had been tormenting him for so long, “Just because I saved you? Because I did you a favor?”

“It doesn’t matter, Thaddeus. It’s all in the past. What’s the point of dwelling on a marriage that ended without a fight?”

Evadne closed her eyes again, as if closing the door to her heart that had just slightly opened. She shivered, “Now is not the time to talk about this. I’m cold. Let’s get going.”

In the heavy rain, the former couple who used to be at odds with each other momentarily agreed to a truce. Both were somewhat injured and could only support each other as they struggled to move forward.

Unfortunately, Evadne’s phone was already broken and Thaddeus‘ phone had no signal!

“I’m sure that we’re on the wrong side of Misty Mountain, otherwise, we would have cell signal.” Gasping for breath, Evadne stumbled forward.

Hungry and cold, she was already drained.

The only thing keeping her going was her determination not to hold Thaddeus back. Now, her legs felt so numb she could barely feel them.

“Before I came looking for you, I asked Gordon to send a helicopter to patrol the mountain. Seeing her struggling. Thaddeus quickly wrapped his arm around her waist, preventing her from falling

“With this weather, the search and rescue will be difficult, so we should.”

Finally, her strength gave out and she collapsed.

Quick as a flash, Thaddeus caught her limp, soaked b*dy and all he could smell was the damp, earthy scent of the soil.

His jaw clenched as a sharp pain pierced his heart.

Just how much hardship had this stubborn woman suffered before he came to save her?

“We need to replace shelter from the rain.”

Thaddeus picked Evadne up and staggered forward.

“Hey, Thaddeus.”

Evadne rested on his back, her arms wrapped around his n*eck, her voice weak, “Can we get out of here?

“We can,” Thaddeus replied without hesitation.

“But I almost died once, what if?”

1 heard they call you the goddess of the mountain.”

Thaddeus moved with a noticeable limp, a faint smile alighting his face. “Funny, some say I’m the god of the mountain.”

She scoffed, closing her eyes in disdain.

“So, we’re not going to die, Evadne.”

Thaddeus took a deep breath, seizing the opportunity to gently grasp her grimy little hand with his broad palm. “If the heavens won’t favor you, I will.”

In the biting chill, Evadne felt an unusual warmth on her hands.
