Chapter 285

“Let her go.”

Jareth looked at the two servants holding Marilla, his eyes filled with a chilling fury that could freeze the blood in one’s veins. His voice was deep and ominous, as if it came straight from the depths of hell.

The two servants were clearly on edge, casting pleading glances at Glynnis for help.

Glynnis could see that Jareth was ordering her own servants around, clearly because he cared for Marilla, cared for this b*tch!

Initially, she had been ready to back down. Jareth was, after all, the man of her dreams. How could she possibly defy him?

But then she remembered Edith, and how her mother and she had completely severed their relationship with the Fairhaven family. There was no way Jareth would ever feel anything for her now.

More importantly, this was the Abernathy family home! It was her home!

Even if Jareth wanted to stand up for Marilla, could his reach really extend this far? He had no right!

So, with fresh grievances and old grudges simmering in her heart, Glynnis gritted her teeth and declared, “No! This is the Abernathy family home. You are my servants, and you must listen to me.”

But before she could finish her sentence, she was interrupted by a scream.

One of the servants holding Marilla was suddenly kicked off his feet by Jareth, and sent flying several meters away!

Seeing a living, breathing person tumble and land heavily on the ground, Glynnis was shocked into silence, her senses numbed by fear.

The other servant quickly let go of Marilla and began to bow and apologize to Jareth, trembling like a leaf in the wind.

“Mr. Jareth. I was wrong! But we were only following orders. Ah!”

Another scream echoed through the room.

Jareth had kicked the second servant away as well, breaking two of her ribs in the process!

Glynnis let out a terrified scream.

*

She had always thought the rumors about Jareth being a “ferocious god” and “living devil” were just jokes.

Now she realized that it was her own naivety and lack of worldly experience that had led her to such a misconception.

Everyone in the room was shocked into silence, the room as silent as a graveyard..

“Jareth.” Marilla’s voice was weak, her legs trembling as she leaned into the man.

Jareth’s eyes narrowed, his arm swiftly wrapping around the petite girl’s waist, pulling her into his embrace.

He held her close, his warm slender hand gently soothing her trembling back.

“It’s okay, Marilla. I’m here.”

Glynnis was green with envy, her hands clenched into fists, her sharp nails digging into the flesh of her palms.

“Ouch.” Marilla whimpered, her voice fragile.

“Where does it hurt?” Jareth asked, his heart constricting with worry.

“Ouch.” She continued to whimper, as if she hadn’t heard his question.

At this moment, Marilla’s mother, Elspeth, finally made her appearance, elegantly dressed and coiffed.

She had just descended halfway down the staircase when she saw Jareth facing off against Glynnis, and the girl he was tenderly cradling in his arms was Marilla!

Elspeth frowned.

Suddenly realizing what was happening, she quietly retreated, hiding herself in the shadows as she observed the scene unfolding below.

“Glynnis.”

Jareth’s gaze was sharp and intimidating, his eyes filled with a sinister coldness as he stared at Glynnis. “You just got out of jail. Are you looking to go back in so soon?”

Glynnis was so overwhelmed by Jareth’s intimidating aura that she stepped back involuntarily.

“Since you’re so forgetful, let me remind you one more time. And it’s going to be the last time.”

Jareth’s eyes held a wolfish ferocity, his handsome face shadowed by a threatening darkness. “Marilla is a woman I care about. Anyone who dares to hurt her is challenging me and challenging the Fairhaven family!”

His words echoed through the hall, leaving no room for doubt.

Glynnis was drenched in sweat, her face as white as a sheet.

Unfortunately, Frederic wasn’t there to protect her, and neither was Elspeth.

“The reason you’ve been so lucky is not because you’re an Abernathy, but because you haven’t crossed my line. But let me tell you, Glynnis, if you so much as touch a hair on Marilla’s head next time, I’ll make sure you rot in jail for the rest of your life. Even if Mr. Frederic comes to your rescue, it won’t make any difference!”

While holding Marilla close with his left arm, Jareth clenched his right fist tightly. “And when that happens, I won’t consider the decades–long friendship between our two families!”

As he spoke, he squinted his eyes and glanced at the top of the stairs.

Feeling the cold bloodthirsty gaze, Elspeth panicked and quickly retreated a few more steps.

But then she realized that she had nothing to fear.

She was the lady of the house, and Jareth’s elder What was there to be afraid of?

Glynnis was left speechless by Jareth’s harsh words.

Despite their lack of expressions, she knew that all the servants around her were laughing at her misfortune.

“Marilla, let’s go. I’ll take you to see Thad, or maybe your sister in law. Is that okay?” Jareth whispered into Manilla’s ear, his voice soft and soothing.

Manilla was feeling dizzy, but she nodded in agreement to whatever Jareth was saying.

She was a good girl

Jareth’s eyes darkened, and he lifted Marilla into his arms, ignoring the stares of everyone in the room as he walked out.

“Jareth! You can’t take her away!”

Glynnis shouted in desperation, “She is an Abernathy! How can you just take her away? Have you asked my parents?

Naturally, she didn’t want Marilla to leave with him. She would be consumed with jealousy, unable to sleep for days!

“I want to take Marilla away, and Manilla wants to go with me. So, what’s the problem?”

Jareth sneered, his gaze filled with contempt as he looked at Glynnis. “Also, do I really need to ask your mother? If she disagreed, wouldn’t she have come down to stop me by now?”

Glynnis was left speechless by his words, and while she was still reeling from the shock, Jareth had already left with Marilla.

The cold wind outside was biting, but Jareth held Marilla close, promising to protect her from the world.

Jareth had always been a rough–and–tumble kind of guy, but when it came to Marilla, he found an uncharacteristic gentleness in his otherwise stony heart.

His large hand rubbed her small arm up and down, afraid that she might be cold, wishing he could transfer his own b*dy warmth to her.

Marilla, feeling secure, leaned her head against his broad chest, snuggling slightly. She was so sweet and trusting.

Jareth’s throat tightened.

He liked this feeling. He liked being relied on and trusted.

Lily, seeing her boss carrying Marilla toward her, smiled knowingly and promptly opened the car door.

Just as Jareth was about to help Marilla into the car, a thin girl stumbled out. It was Linda.

“Mr. Jareth! Mr. Jareth, wait!”

Not only was Lily a secretary, but she was also a trained b*dyguard. Seeing someone rushing toward them, she immediately stepped in front of Jareth. However, before she could reach them, Linda fell to her knees.

Jareth and Lily both looked shocked.

“Mr. Jareth! Can you help Miss Marilla? Can you?” Linda pleaded, crying on the cold ground.

“Lily, help her up.”

Jareth frowned, “Speak up.”

Just as Lily was about to help Linda up, Linda shook her head, refusing to stand. “If you don’t promise to help Miss Marilla, I won’t get up! I know I’m just an insignificant servant, an ant in your eyes! But even if it costs my life, I hope to help Miss Marilla!”

“What happened?” Jareth asked seriously.

Wiping her tears, Linda knelt at his feet and gently rolled up Marilla’s sleeve.

In an instant, both Jareth and Lily gasped.

Marilla’s slender white arm was covered in bruises and bloodstains, old and new. It was heart–wrenching to see.

Jareth’s eyes reddened immediately. His arms, which were holding Marilla, tightened so much that it seemed like his shirt would rip.

“Who did this?”

Despite his anger, he only said these three words.

Lily felt a shiver run down her spine.

No one knew Jareth better than her. Whenever he spoke calmly and lightly, it meant he was truly angry.

“It was Miss Glynnis

Linda didn’t care anymore, and named her directly through her tears. “Glynnis, being the favorite of the chairman and his wife, always bullies Miss Marilla at home! She’s a demon! When Mr. Thaddeus is home, Glynnis is afraid and doesn’t dare to hurt Miss Marilla. But Mr. Thaddeus, being the president, can’t even stay at the Windermere Estate for two days in a month. He can protect Miss Marilla for a while, but not for a lifetime!”

The more Jareth heard, the more his brows furrowed.

Even Lily, who was by his side, clenched her fists.

“Mr. Jareth, you’re Mr. Thaddeus’s best friend, and it’s clear you truly care for Miss Marilla. Can you help her? Can you protect her?” Linda asked, sobbing.

“Alright, I promise you”

Jareth took a deep breath, looking down at the pitiful girl in his arms. His heart pounded with the heavy burden he now carried.

“As long as I am here, I will protect Miss Marilla.”

And so, Marilla was openly taken away by Jareth.

In front of everyone, he had embarrassed Glynnis.

Even though it happened at home, she felt as if her queen–like authority had been trampled by Jareth.

Why did even that idiot have a knight in shining armor?

And she didn’t!

In terms of beauty, family background, and talent, how was she inferior to Marilla?

Jareth would rather like a lunatic than her? Was he out of his mind?

Glynnis was so choked with rage that she could only vent her anger on Marilla’s maid, Linda. She not only punished Linda by making her clean all the toilets in the Windermere Estate tonight, but also deducted her year–end bonus.

“That’s enough! Look at you, your fierce and evil look is even worse than that little prostitute Evadne! No wonder Jareth doesn’t fancy you. Even I can’t stand the sight of you now!”

Elspeth sat leisurely on the couch, filing her bright red nails.

Glynnis was so angry that she was panting, but she vaguely sensed something strange about her mother’s attitude.

If it had been before, like tonight when she had been humiliated at home, Elspeth would have jumped out to help her save face. After all, she was her most beloved daughter, and this was the Abernathy family, her own territory. How could she let others run wild?

But this time, Elspeth was unusually calm.

She must have known about the fierce quarrel downstairs, so why didn’t she come down to help her?

“I’m telling you, Glynnis, I don’t want to see this kind of thing happening at home again. Marilla is also my daughter. She’s your sister. How can you hit her in public? If your father and grandfather hear about it, they will blame me for not educating you well. You’re twenty–five years old. Why do you still act so rashly? You always say your sister is not normal, but I think you’re no better!” Elspeth grumbled.

“Mom! I need to ask you something!”

Glynnis stormed over to Elspeth and glared at her. “Did you see the argument between me and Mr. Jareth downstairs?”

Elspeth raised her eyebrows, “Yes, what about it?”

“So you just sat back and watched? You saw everything but didn’t help me!”

Glynnis was so angry that her face turned red, and she was about to explode. “You didn’t help me, and you even let Jareth take Marilla away! How could you!”

“Why can’t I?

Elspeth scoffed in response, leaving Glynnis dumbfounded. “Mom!”

“Even I’ve given up on Jareth and you’re still holding a torch for him? Good Lord, I don’t understand it. How could a smart sensible woman like me raise such a love–stricken fool?”

Elspeth cast a scornful glance at her and shook her head, “I can’t put all my eggs in your shaky basket. If Jareth’s taken a liking to your sister, then it’s best for me to go with the flow and support their match. After all, Marilla is my daughter too. If Jareth’s willing to overlook her imperfections and truly cares for her, then who am I to stand in their way? In the end, if your sister marries Jareth, you as her older sister will also benefit, won’t you?”

Boom!

Glynnis‘ head buzzed, her vision blurred.

What was that?

Her mother was supporting Marilla? What about her? What was she supposed to become?

Was she merely a pawn to be discarded after use, the butt of a joke?

“Marilla can’t date Jareth, absolutely not. I won’t allow it!” Glynnis shrieked, her b*dy shaking as if she was suffering from rabies, her voice hoarse from screaming at Elspeth.

This was the first time she had ever lashed out at her mother whom she had always admired!

Elspeth’s gaze darkened. She picked up the wine glass from the coffee table and threw its contents at Glynnis.

Splattering her with red wine, leaving her a mess.

Glynnis was stunned, her hollow eyes staring at Elspeth, her face dripping with wine.

“Who gave you permission to raise your voice at your mother? Have you lost all manners?”

Elspeth frowned, throwing the expensive glass onto the ground without a second thought, “If you’re not satisfied, then win Jareth over! But, from my experience, I’m telling you not to waste your time! Even if all the women in the world were to disappear, I bet Jareth would never fall for you!”

Then Elspeth stormed off.

Her mother’s final words crushed the last bit of Glynnis‘ pride, destroying any remaining shred of her integrity.

Glynnis squatted down, her eyes bloodshot. She picked up the shards of glass, clenching them in her hand until blood started to seep out, not caring about the -pain.

It was as if she was holding onto Marilla’s throat!

“Everyone should die? Then let them die! Let them all die, then Jareth will be mine!”
