His Ex wife is a billionaire Chapter 362
Chapter 362
Jeff was desperate to save his son. He had confirmed with Emeric over the phone that he and Evadne were at home. So, the next day, he would visit the Ashbourne family in Skyrim, along with Avery.
“Emeric! Emeric! You’ve got to help your nephew this time!”
Jeff burst through the entrance, his voice filled with urgency, his demeanor a far cry from his usual composed self, especially in front of his long-time friend, Emeric.
Emeric and Suri promptly came out to greet them.
Seeing Jeff’s disheveled appearance and clear signs of stress, Emeric couldn’t help but chuckle inwardly.
Finally, this old man, who had been competing with him in the looks department for years, was showing signs of tiredness!
“Mr. Chambers, what on earth happened?” Suri asked, taken aback by his distraught state.
Jeff, in his hurry, tripped on a stone and ended up taking a tumble, falling right in front of Emeric and Suri.
Emeric and Suri could only look on in shocked silence as Jeff groaned in pain, clutching his ankle.
“Dad! Are you okay?” Avery rushed to help his father, struggling to suppress his laughter.
Jeff’s devotion to his son was truly unquestionable.
Without bothering to regain his composure. Jeff grabbed Emeric’s arm, “Emeric, Byron had been in a serious car accident a couple of days before!”
Emeric and Suri gasped, “What happened?”
“It was a rainy night, and he was driving home. The roads were sl*ppery, and visibility was low. A large truck was driving too fast and hit his car.”
Avery, supporting his father, couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret as he explained, “His legs were crushed under the car. They’re shattered. The doctors say that they need have his legs amputated.”
“Amputate?!” Emeric was startled.
“You’ve watched Byron grow up. You can’t just stand by and let him become a cripple, can you?”
Jeff’s eyes were filled with hope, “I heard from Avery that Evadne is a top surgeon with excellent skills. Can we have her help Byron?”
“Mr. Chambers.”
Just then, Evadne’s elegant figure emerged from the mansion.
Under the morning light, her radiant face was absolutely enchanting. It seemed she had just woken up, her eyes still slightly bleary. Freshly washed hair glistening with droplets of water, her makeup-free face glowing with a touch of red, she was truly a sight for sore eyes.
Avery watched her intently, swallowing hard, unable to look away.
It was dangerous to meet someone so beautiful when one was young. For the past fifteen years, he had only been accompanied by a longing for her, and a loneliness that was unfulfilled.
“Evadne, please help me! You’ve got to save Byron!” Jeff rushed forward, grabbing Evadne’s hands, on the verge of tears.
“I heard most of what you said earlier.”
Evadne spoke in a gentle tone, “I am a doctor. It’s my duty to save lives. Since Byron is your son, I won’t stand by and do nothing.”
She didn’t have much of a connection with Byron, but given her relationship with Emeric and Jeff, she felt obliged to help.
“Thank you. Thank you, Evadne!” Jeff’s heart eased slightly.
“But, Mr. Chambers, I have to be clear. I’m just an ordinary doctor, not a miracle worker. I need to examine Byron myself to give you an accurate answer.”
“Evadne, with you on the case, Byron definitely has a chance! I heard from Avery that you performed a successful surgery on Thaddeus!” Jeff exclaimed hurriedly.
Evadne corrected him with a sigh, “It’s brain surgery.”
“If you can operate on the brain, then fixing Byron’s legs can’t be too difficult for you!”
Evadne pressed her l*p, her eyes meeting Avery’s inadvertently.
Avery gave her a gentle smile, his eyes warm.
“Okay, I’ll do my best.”
That afternoon, Evadne and Mr. Chambers and his son returned to Elmsworth.
To the Chambers family, Evadne was like a godsend. She received the highest level of hospitality and respect from them.
Evadne, focused solely on her mission to save Byron, brushed aside all the attention and went straight to Byron’s ward.
At that moment, Byron was still unconscious. In truth, he should have woken up, but the doctors had increased the anesthetic dosage; fearful that he wouldn’t be able to handle
the shock of his condition.
An hour later, Evadne emerged from the room along with the hospital’s dean and two surgical professors, their expressions grave.
“Evadne, how is Byron?” Jeff rushed over to her.
The rest of the Chambers family, along with secretaries, b*dyguards, and others, also flocked around.
Evadne furrowed her thin brows, remaining silent for a moment before speaking quietly, “Mr. Chambers, Byron’s condition is not good. His fracture is very severe. Even if we used metal pins to piece it together, it’s unlikely to hold. The damage is extensive. It’s unlikely that he will recover completely in the future. The chance of him standing again is less than twenty percent.”
The Chambers family was in shock.
Jeff had to be held up by Matthew and Bertha; otherwise, he would have fainted.
Only Avery stood alone in a corner unnoticed, his gold-rimmed glasses reflecting a cold light, a faint smile playing on his l*ps.
“Ms. Ashbourne! Even if there’s just a one percent chance, please do save my brother!” Matthew pleaded, desperation in his eyes.
“Of course, since I’m already here, I’ll do my best.”
Evadne’s eyes shimmered, but she hesitated.
Jeff, noticing her hesitation, rushed forward, “Evadne, if you have something to say, just say it!”
“Mr. Chambers, are you sure Byron’s legs were severed in a car accident?”
Evadne’s serious question took the Chambers family by surprise.
Only two persons who’s expressions were unfathomable, one was Matthew, the other Avery.
“What do you mean by that, Evadne?” Jeff asked, a look of astonishment on his face.
“I’ve treated countless patients who suffer from fractures in my career. Based on my experience, I can check what caused the fracture just by examining the injury. I can even deduce what kind of object caused the fracture.”
Evadne paused, her voice dropping a notch, “I don’t think this was caused by a car accident. There are signs of human intervention. It might have been caused by a heavy object like an iron rod.”
At her words, Avery’s eyes darkened; his already pale face turned ashen.
“Ms. Ashbourne, are you implying that after my brother’s accident, someone came and attacked him?”
Matthew glanced at Avery, feigning concern, “So, does this mean Byron’s accident was also staged?”
Staged?!
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
“Dad! You see! I told you there was something fishy about his sudden accident, didn’t I?” Bertha complained angrily.
Jeff’s pupils dilated in shock, his expression hardening.
“I can’t say for sure if it was staged or not. I’m just stating the anomalies I found as a surgeon. In an hour, I’ll be performing an amputation on Byron. The surgery will take some time, Mr. Chambers. You shouldn’t wait here. Maybe go home or reserve a room at the K Orld Hotel. I’ll inform you as soon as we have results.” Evadne suggested considerately. “I’m not tired. I’ll wait here!”
Jeff couldn’t help but adore his future daughter-in-law.
He was determined to have Evadne join the Chambers family.
The surgery took much longer than expected, starting at one in the afternoon and ending at nine in the evening.
Finally, the lights in the operating room went off.
Evadne, leaning on an assistant for support, slowly walked out. Her surgical gown was soaked in sweat after standing for so many hours, and her slender legs were trembling. Fortunately, she was young and healthy, and she could bear it.
“Evadne!”
Avery was the first to rush to her side, his hand gently supporting her trembling b*dy, “You must be exhausted, aren’t you?”
“I’m okay. The surgery was the most important thing.”
Suddenly, Evadne felt dizzy, her b*dy trembling slightly as she struggled to keep standing.
“Evadne, be careful!” Avery tightened his grip around her waist, afraid she might fall.
Everyone in the Chambers family looked at each other, exchanging knowing glances.
The Ashbourne family’s daughter seemed quite intimate with Avery. Perhaps they already had feelings for each other.
However, given Avery’s position in the Chambers family, he might not be a good match for Ms. Ashbourne.
“I’m okay.” Evadne regained her balance, gently pushing Avery away.
She didn’t want to cause any misunderstandings, not under everyone’s watchful eyes.
Avery awkwardly withdrew his hands, his fingers clenched tightly.
Jeff, followed by his secretary and others, rushed over.
“Evadne, how is it?!”
“Mr. Chambers, I did my best.”
Evadne wiped the sweat from her forehead, taking a deep breath, “Byron’s leg was severely injured. I did everything I could to save his left leg.”
“And, what about his right leg?!”
“It had to be amputated.”
The word “amputate” hit Jeff like a bolt of lightning, leaving him in a daze.
“It’s okay. I know you did your best. Being able to save one leg, you’ve done a great job.”
“Also, near the end of the surgery, Byron woke up. He said his legs were intentionally broken by someone.” Evadne reported, not holding back any details.
Jeff was taken aback, quickly asking, “Who? Who did it?!”
“You should ask Byron once he’s calmed down.”
It had to be admitted that the operation went well due to Evadne’s exceptional surgical skills. The success of her saving one of Byron’s legs quickly spread through the hospital, creating a sensation. It was nothing short of a miracle.
Byron was moved to a ward, and everyone in the Chambers family went in to accompany him.
Only Avery stayed back, sitting on a bench with Evadne, offering her a cup of hot coffee.
“Evadne, you must be thirsty. Have some coffee.”
“Thank you.” Evadne accepted the cup, her tired gaze meeting Avery’s, filled with an indescribable emotion.
“I should be the one who says thank you. Thank you for saving my brother’s leg. Even though he might have trouble moving, or even need a prosthetic leg in the future, it’s still better than being in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.” Avery said sincerely.
“Ave.”
Evadne fell silent for a moment, then asked in a low voice, “Was it you?”
Avery’s heart skipped a beat, “What?”
“Never mind.”
Evadne didn’t press further, standing up slowly, “I’m hungry. I need to get something to eat.”
“I’ll go with you.”
Avery didn’t want her to go alone, so he got up as well.
Suddenly, Evadne held her forehead, feeling dizzy and a bit queasy.
She was experiencing severe hypoglycemia from not eating all day, and almost fainted.
Fortunately, Avery was quick to react. He caught her just as she was about to fall, his arm tightly wrapped around her frail b*dy.
“Evadne.”
“Ilana?!”
Evadne squinted, hearing a familiar voice calling out to her. She turned her head slowly.
The next moment, her heart skipped a beat.
Hamilton, sitting in a wheelchair, looked at her in bewilderment.
While the man pushing the wheelchair had a tall and straight figure, his gaze cold as ice.
It was Thaddeus.
