Chapter 525

The afternoon sun streamed through the curtains as Evadne finally woke from her deep slumber. She was notorious for being able to sleep in like a hiberating bear, but Thaddeus, ever the light sleeper, had only managed a few hours before he was wide awake

Having not left the room, Thaddeus had been quietly handling urgent matters for the family business from the comfort of the living room sofa, all while keeping a silent vigil over her.

Suddenly. Evadne let out a gasp, bolting upright from the bed.

Thaddeus immediately dropped the files he was working on and rushed to her side, wrapping her in his arms. “What’s wrong? Bad dream?” he asked gently.

Evadne, her breath still uneven, clutched his hand, her cheeks flushed a ripe cherry red. “Thaddeus, guess what I dreamed

d about?* He cleared his throat, leaning in to steal a k*ss, only to have her dodge playfully. “I dreamed that my brother and Chasel got married!”

Oh?” Thaddeus paused, staring at her in bewilderment.

I

“Our whole family was at their wedding and I caught the bouquet Chasel threw!”

Thaddeus remained silent, unsure of how to respond.

“And just as they were about to k*ss, I woke up! Ugh, why did I have to wake up at the most crucial moment? Evadne pouted, her fingers working through her hair in frustration, her heart still racing.

“You’re too adorable, Evadne, Thaddeus chuckled, as he sat on the bed and gently pulled her close, tapping her forehead lightly. “What goes on in your head every day?”

II you.”

“I was so tired when we got back, I fell asleep the moment I closed my eyes. But I had so much I wanted to tell

She swallowed nervously, fixating on his eyes. 1 have this feeling, like Chasel might actually like my brother. And my brother doesn’t seem to push Chasel away”

Thaddeus didn’t dismiss her words as mere post–sleep ramblings. Instead, he pondered them seriously.

“I know about Dr. Bright’s S**ual orientation, but Cassius is different.

“That’s true. Maybe I’m just being silly, but that dream felt so real,” Evadne sighed, taking a deep breath. Tve always thought my brother was the best man in our family, that no woman was good enough for him. Not that those girls weren’t nice, but something was always missing. Yet, that perfect sense of compatibility, I felt it with Chasel. It’s unbelievable.”

“Evadne, even if that’s the case, would you be unable to accept it?”

Evadne shook her head vehemently. Tm more worried about how Emeric would take it. My brother claims his faith is why he’s not married with children. Emeric has reluctantly accepted that. But if my brother actually prefers men, Ah, I’m overthinking this. Even if it’s true, Emeric has slowly come to accept you, what’s there left to not accept?”

Thaddeus was torn between laughter and concern

Just then, the concerned voice of Alva echoed from outside the door

Mr. Abernathy, Mrs. Abernathy, are you both awake? Come down for a bite to eat before you go back to sleep. How can you rest well on an empty stomach?”

Thaddeus wore an expression of pure sheepishness, while Evadne clutched the sheets to her chest in embarrassment.

He was all the more vigorous when he was hungry, devouring his wife whole, taking her in completely.

After freshening up and changing clothes, Evadne and Thaddeus descended to the dining room.

It had been a while since Evadne had tasted Alva’s cooking, and she devoured the meal with gusto. Alva watched her with affection, as if she were her own long–lost daughter.

“Wow, this is divine!” Evadne licked her l*ps and let out a cute little burp, then enthusiastically handed her bowl to Alva. “Can I have another serving, Alva? Pile it high, pleaser

“Right away, Mrs. Abernathy!” Alva cheerfully complied.

All elders were the same. They brightened up seeing young ones eat heartily.

“Take it easy, Evadne. Don’t overdo it and hurt your stomach, Thaddeus said Indulgently, pulling out a napkin to gently wipe away the grease from the corner of her mouth.

“Why are you eating so little? On a diet? she teased, leaning into his touch.

Tm not very hungry.”

“If you weren’t hungry, you should’ve said something earlier. The fish Alva fried and the shrimp she made are delicious. I was saving some for you, worried you wouldn’t have enough.”

Evadne reached out for the fish, the embodiment of a cat that got the cream. If you’re not eating, it’s all mine!”

The tenderness that shone from the depths of Thaddeus’s eyes threatened to melt her on the spot.

This was exactly what he wanted–her uninhibited self. He didn’t care for gentle manners or understanding–just her, as she was

After a hearty meal, Evadne flopped contentedly onto the living room couch.

As Thaddeus took a plate of neatly sliced fruits from Alva, intending to bring it to Evadne, the housekeeper pulled him aside, her voice low with urgency.

“Mr. Abernathy, I’ve been asking around Elmsworth, talking to some old friends who work in big houses. Many of the young ladies there have faced difficulties with childbirth. So I’ve collected some home remedies. I’ll send them to you to look over. Maybe Gordon could pick up some of the herbs, and we could give them a try with Mrs. Abernathy. It just might do the trick.

“Alva. Thaddeus’s face darkened slightly.

Alva raised three fingers in earnest promise. “Mr. Abernathy, I swear to heaven, I only said it was a relative’s child who was ill, never mentioned Mrs. Abernathy! And the friends I asked are all trustworthy, they wouldn’t think ill of it!”

Thaddeus pursed his l*ps, a frown creasing his brow. “Alva, I’ve told you time and again. It doesn’t matter to me whether Evadne can conceive or not. I love her regardless. We’re not royalty needing an heir to the throne. Even if Frederic were to revoke my position as CEO over this, it wouldn’t bother me. I just want Evadne safe and happy by my side. Raising a child is tough, and trying all sorts of methods just to conceive is not only hard but also painful. I can’t stand to see Evadne suffer, not one bit.”

“Mr. Abernathy, didn’t you also get in touch with that clinic abroad? I figured I’d chip in and help.” Alva’s voice choked up.

It wasn’t out of self–pity, but rather out of deep concern for Evadne.

“I called it off.”

Thaddeus’s long lashes lowered as he shook his head, “Back then, I thought just like you. I wanted to do everything in my power to heal Evadne, firstly to restore her health, and secondly, to make amends, to atone. But gradually, I realized that by doing so, I was just dredging up her sorrows time and again. It might also give her the wrong impression that I only cared about whether she could give me a child.”

“It’s my fault. I didn’t think it through.”

Alva rubbed her swollen eyes, “Let’s not talk about it anymore, I won’t bring it up again. As long as you and Mrs. Abernathy have each other for the long haul, what else really matters?” /

Thaddeus steadied his emotions and carried a bowl of fruit into the living room,

He and Alva had been so engrossed in their conversation that they hadn’t noticed Gordon had already arrived.

“Mr. Abernathy, Mrs. Abernathy. I have a few matters to report to the both of you!”
