Suens wailed as piston criments and ambulances converged in front of the aging apartment complex

The residents, having heard whispers of a vicious break in, humbled together, anxiety etched on their faces me they watched the

Aaron unable to all back the had his team take the perpetrator back to the station while he followed the ambulance to the hospital to ensure Goston and beverly were sate. It also made a point to call Evadne and Thaddeus, letting them know what had happened

On the ambulance, Beverly, who had been on the brink of suffocating, was now pale, the alarming purple hus fading from her cheeks as she lay wearing an oxygen mask

“Ms Higgins, you gotta pull through” Gorden implored, his face a patchwork of bruises, paying no mind to his own injuries as he clutched her limp hand in his

“She’s stable for now, her vitals are holding steady. Don’t worry” Aaron said soothingly, trying to offer some comfort

It was clear that Gordon’s concern for the girl ran deep, and it wasn’t just because she was a key witness against Byron.

“Aaron, what are you doing here?” Gordon asked, his thoughts settling after the initial shock

“Evadne thought it was a pretty big deal having Beverly testify, especially since she’s a minor. She figured her guardians should be notified. She sent me to check on Beverly and her mom while also convincing Beverly’s mother to cooperate with us. After all, the police carry more weight than just a neighbor” Aaron explained, his handsome features shadowed by concern as he thought about the close call. “Who would have thought we’d run into this mess tonight? Seems like someone’s getting impatient”

Gordon was stunned.

He had been sent by Thaddeus, and Aaron was dispatched by Evadne.

Their thoughts and actions were eerily aligned!

“By the way this is for you.”

Gordon reached into his d*rty slacks, his hand trembling from pain, and handed Aaron a butterfly knife, “You forgot this,” Touched by Gordon’s concern despite his own pain, Aaron accepted the knife, “Thanks, Gordon, really, I owe you one.”

remember Mrs. Abernathy has one just like it.”

“Yeah, Evadne and I both received one from Cassius,” Aaron said, a fond memory lighting up his eyes. “I le’s like a knife wizard to us. He’s better with blades than Elvis is with his guitar. When we were kids, while other brothers played games with their siblings, ours played with knives. He loved crafting and collecting them, had over a thousand in his collection alone.

Gordon felt a chill down his spine, sweat beading at his nose.

He vowed to remind Thaddeus, once he was firmly part of the family, that arguments were to be avoided at all costs; words, chosen carefully. Thaddeus had to be cautious.

“Cassius saw that Evadne and had a knack for knife play, so he not only taught us everything he knew but also gifted us each with a butterfly knife,” Aaron continued, smiling more broadly as he admired the elegant knife. “Evadne’s better with it than I am. I usually don’t show it off, and I’d hate to use it. But tonight was an emergency, and firing a gun in a residential area would have caused more trouble and chaos. Thankfully, I wasn’t too rusty.”

Gordon’s jaw hung open, as if dislocated.

Aaron said he was not as skilled as Evadne with the knife, so that made her a beautiful monster!

Ashbourne Hospital.

Evadne and Thaddeus rushed over as soon as they got the news and took charge of the situation.

Thanks to the timely rescue, Beverly was out of critical danger and had been moved to a regular ward. Aside from a few bruises on his face and a broken arm, Gordon was fine and was staying in the room next door to Beverly

But he was far from relaxed. As soon as his bones were set, he hurried over to check on the girl, his concern palpable. Back at the station, Aaron immediately set out to deal with the vicious criminal who had attempted to murder a witness.

At the hospital, Larry came especially to check on Beverly

Thaddeus’s strong arms circled Evadne’s waist, holding her close, his voice a gentle whisper, “Evadne, don’t worry. The important thing is, Ms. Higgins is okay. That’s what matters most.”

Evadne, her eyes red and swollen, stared at the unconscious girl, the bitter guilt in her chest making her heart ache, “Thank goodness you thought to send Gordon today. I figured Aaron could talk to Beverly’s mom. But what if we’d been careless? What if Gordon and Aaron had been a step too late?

The hypothetical if still sent shivers down their spines.

Had that “if” turned out differently, they would either have been responsible for the death of an innocent girl or the loss of a loyal comrade. Either prospect could haunt them for life.

Seeing Evadne’s eyes brimming with broken light, ready to spill over, Thaddeus felt the pain in his throat as he pulled her into his embrace.

He rubbed her back, murmuring words of comfort, not even fully aware of what he was saying, just hoping to ease her pain, her guilt.

Gordon felt even more helpless, “Mrs. Abernathy! Both me and Ms. Higgins are fine, please don’t cry! If you cry, I might too!”

“I could have done better, I could have kept her safe,” Evadne choked back her emotions, but a single tear still traced its way down her beautiful cheek. “But I left a gap for the bad guys to exploit, I’m as dumb as a pig!”

If you’re a pig, then I’m the head hog.” Thaddeus said, trying to lighten the heavy mood with a small joke.

Thaddeus, with a playful smirk, leaned his forehead against her smooth one, “You know what they say, love. When you marry a pig, you live in the sty. Looks like you, my little pot–bellied pig, have turned me into a stinky old boar.”

Evadne couldn’t help but snort with laughter, “Muscles like yours? You’re no pig.”

She playfully jabbed at Thaddeus’s solid abs and her tears turned into chuckles, “You’re more like a dog, like one of those sticky candies, always there, always close.”

Gordon looked down, a grin spreading across his face.

Thaddeus’s idea of sweet nothings might’ve been a bit rough around the edges, but hey, if it works, it works.

After the doc finished checking Beverly over, he let out a sigh that was heavy with sympathy, “Man, this poor girl. Neck as thin as a stick, fingers like rolled–up cigarettes. She’s clearly malnourished, and at an age when she should be growing! How can her folks neglect her like this?”

Evadne and Thaddeus were struck silent, heartache choking their words, while Gordon’s eyes instantly reddened.

“Look at these bruises on her n*eck. I swear, a little more pressure and it would’ve snapped. This is serious abuse!”

The doctor shook his head in frustration and walked away.

Evadne clenched her teeth in anger, a fury engulfing her, “Who else but the Chambers family could be cruel enough to hurt Beverly like this?”
