Chapter 573

The word “responsible” struck a chord in Camille’s heart, sending a tremor through her resolve.

Still, she steeled herself and gave him a shove, breaking free from his embrace.

“Relax, I’m not that delicate, and it’s not like it was my first k*ss. No need to act like it’s some kind of a big deal,” she said with a casual flick of her smooth hair, brushing off the moment.

“Prosecutor Arnold, you are quite the looker, sure, but I’ve always had a thing for the bad boys. The squeaky–clean knights in shining armor? Not really my type.”

Bad boys?

Like Jareth and Elvis with their devil–may–care attitudes?

Jareth was already off the market, but Elvis, the notorious bachelor, was still available. And with the party heating up like a college mixer, with the men and women getting cozy, even he was feeling the pull. Could she possibly be interested in Elvis?

A pang of irrational jealousy surged through Arnold. “Maybe it’s time you tried something different for a change?” he blurted out.

Camille, who had been maintaining her composure, almost lost it at his words, her l*ps pressing downward in an effort to keep her cool.

“I’m open to it. In matters of the heart, it’s all about excitement and novelty,” she said with a sly smile, playing the enchantress toying with mortal hearts. “But Prosecutor Arnold, are you up for the challenge, given your commitment issues?”

Camille rushed back to her friend Evadne, giving her a quick rundown before claiming a work emergency had come up and her assistant was there to whisk her away.

Evadne, worried about her bestie and curious about what had transpired between her and Arnold, hurried off to confront Arnold.

Downstairs in the living room, Arnold sat brooding on the sofa, nursing a cup of strong coffee served by Alva to sober him up.

“What the heck happened? Did you bully Camille?” Evadne charged in, ready to defend her friend’s honor.

“I k*ssed her,” Arnold confessed, deciding to come clean. Maybe his little sister could offer some insight.

“Goodness!”

Before he knew it, a grape from the fruit bowl smacked him on the forehead. Evadne was furious, hurling grapes at him as her cheeks flushed with anger. “No wonder Camille looked so down, with red–rimmed eyes when she returned. You’re the one who upset her!”

As she tossed more grapes his way, Arnold ignored the fruity onslaught and even popped one into his mouth. “Her eyes were red? Really?”

“Of course! And it’s all because of you. I sent her to look after you, and what do you do? Get handsy with her? Are you the well–known prosecutor or the well–known thug? After a couple of drinks, you’re suddenly so bold!”

Hands on her hips, Evadne laid into him with fiery words. “You owe Camille an explanation for tonight! Otherwise, you’re just another scoundrel in the Ashbourne family, following in Emeric’s footsteps!”

“You think I don’t want to make things right? I told her I liked her, but she wouldn’t have it. What am I supposed to do?” Arnold’s eyes reddened as he stood up. “I admit I have feelings for her, so I made my move. I have no experience with romance, no charm to win a girl’s heart, but I wanted to try! But she’s not interested in me, says she’s just in it for fun. What can I do? Can you force her to like me?”

Evadne blinked, taken aback by her brother’s candid confession.

Good heavens, Arnold had actually confessed to Camille so directly? Was he really that bold?

Ah, a forceful k*ss would upset any self–respecting girl, wouldn’t it?

Their quarrel wasn’t quiet, and Thaddeus was the first to arrive. He’d had a fair bit to drink, but his mind was sharp. He walked straight over to Evadne and wrapped his arm around her waist, his voice husky with concern. “What’s all this about? Why are you fighting with Arnold?

Evadne wriggled in his grasp, directing her irritation at Thaddeus. “Men are all devils!”
