Chapter 637: Panic in the Face of Death
Zane spoke softly, "Albi found out through the Black Market that your brother didn't realize you were in Manches City and is still looking for you back home."
Albi arrived quickly and handed Myles a cigarette and a lighter before standing several meters away with keen eyes.
Myles lit the cigarette. "It's nice over here, quiet with fewer people."
At first, Myles thought his illness was due to something he ate. But every day he felt nauseous and couldn't digest anything. When it became unbearable, he went to the hospital for a check-up. He never expected to face life or death.
The doctor's words were sobering. Perhaps his test results weren't good at the time because of his serious expression and tone of voice.
Myles panicked instantly.
All plans came to an abrupt halt with this unexpected event.
He had considered confronting Bonnie but as Zane said, how could he bear pushing Bonnie out of his world?
When feeling helpless, intelligence often goes offline. That's why he made such decisions now that he knows what happened after editing those texts and calculating Bonnie's reaction so that they could drag on like this.
As for those messages sent to Haider, Myles only sent them after receiving the second result.
Ultimately, Myles was an emotional person who naturally did not want to burden Bonnie immediately upon learning about himself so chose this way quietly disappearing from everyone's sight which seemed somewhat reassuring.
But Zane's appearance today has shaken him somewhat again.
During this period here in Manches City almost every night Myles dreamed of Bonnie; closing his eyes all there was is her image.
The taste of missing someone wasn't easy at all.
"Hey! Didn't I tell you not to smoke?"
Myles took two puffs from his cigarette when a nurse rushed over snatching it away from him saying: "Why don't you take care of yourself? You can't smoke under your current condition; be careful what you ea too!"The young nurse rattled off a list of instructions before realizing there was someone else in the room. When she looked at Zane, she paused for a moment before asking, "Are you the patient's family member? Please take care of him and make sure he doesn't smoke or drink anything."
Zane nodded quietly after listening to the nurse's words. "Okay, I'll make sure he follows your advice."
Satisfied with his response, the nurse nodded and added, "You'll be getting an IV soon. Make sure to get some fresh air before returning to your room."
Myles nodded in agreement while giving the nurse a nod of thanks as she left.
Once they were alone again, Myles turned to Zane and asked hesitantly, "Do you think I won't make it through tomorrow?"
Zane glanced at him and replied calmly,"Are you scared?"
Myles let out a hoarse laugh. "You act like you're not afraid of death yourself. When you were lying in ICU last time, did it never occur to you that if something happened to you then Yanis would have nothing more to do with either one of us?"
Although Myles' words sounded harsh, Zane understood where he was coming from.
At that time, Zanewas indeed scared. He was afraid that he would die on the operating table without ever seeing Yanis again. Even more so, the thought that someone else might end up spending their life with her instead made him feel even more anxious than facing death itself.
So Zane could empathize with Myles' fear, but he still felt like his friend's decision seemed too extreme considering this wasn't some terminal illness or imminent death sentence.
"Let's go back to your room first," said Zane."Don't forget, you still need an IV drip."
Myles sighed heavily as he stood up."I know my condition isn't fatal, but people who suffer from this disease usually only live until their forties or fifties. I don't want her tied down by me for just ten years." Zanefound himself at loss for words upon hearing Myles' confession. He wasn't good at comforting others, and didn't know how bestto respond. But neither spoke another word as they walked together silently back towards their hospital room. The nurse arrived on time and helped Myles with his IV before leaving. Zane turned to him and asked, "How long do you have to stay here?"
"About a month. My condition is a bit serious, so the doctor recommended that I stay for this long. They'll test me once a week until all my data returns to normal, then I should be able to leave. But I'll have to take medication for the rest of my life."
Myles chuckled at himself. "I guess I'll become a pill bottle from now on."
"What about Bonnie? Are you planning on keeping this from her?" Zane asked.
Myles fell silent for a moment before responding, "For now, yes. I can't bring myself to say anything too harsh, but if I don't see or contact her for a month, she'll definitely get angry and ignore me. As long as I stop bothering her in the future, things will slowly fade away."
Myles knew Bonnie well enough to make such an assumption.
Zane had no say in their relationship matters.
The reason he came looking for Myles was because of Yanis' hesitant words last night.
After Myles finished speaking, he looked at Zane and said, "Don't tell Yanis about this."
Zane didn't respond right away.
Seeing his reaction made Myles anxious,"Are you really going to tell Yanis about what's happening here?"
"I came looking for you because Yanis asked me for help; otherwise why would I bother coming here when there's nothing wrong with me?"
Myles remained silent.
"I won't say anything if you don't want me too," Zane continued,"But it'd be best if you found an appropriate opportunity during your stay here to talk things out with Bonnie. Even if death is knocking at your doo right now, you can't just die alone like this; eventually people will replace out."
Myles understood what Zane meant but hesitated before saying, "Let's wait awhile longer;I will go see her eventually, but please don't tell her yet."
Zane nodded, "I have something else that needs attention. I'm heading back now."
After reminding him not reveal any information regarding his situation, Yanis left. Myle breathed sigh of relief, and waved goodbye as well
