Chapter 644: I'M Not A Bad Person, But I Am A Man.
Chapter 644: I'm not a bad person, but I am a man.
Bonnie and Lane's relationship was now just that of friends, so she didn't hold back when speaking to him. She briefly explained the joke she had just made. Lane chuckled, "I am indeed single, Miss Cooke. Would you consider me?"
Although Lane said this in a joking tone, Bonnie didn't feel like it was a joke. There was a moment of awkwardness.
But before Bonnie could say anything, Lane spoke up again, "On second thought, never mind. If you gave me a chance Mr. Myles would have to fight me." That put an end to the topic in Lane's playful words.
For some reason though, when Lane finished his last sentence Bonnie inexplicably breathed a sigh of relief.
The three chatted for a while longer before another man called for Lane and he left. Bonnie looked at Yanis and asked nervously, "He was joking right?"
Yanis glanced towards where Lane had gone off talking with someone else then turned back to Bonnie, "What do you think?"
Bonnie hesitated for several seconds before saying anxiously, "I feel like there might be something more there... it didn't seem like just a joke."
Yanis smiled slightly, "I never knew you were so perceptive."
When Bonnie heard Yanis' words she looked at her in shock, "So... you saw it too? He... he really does have feelings for me?"
Yanis replied calmly, "Some people can't hide things in their eyes; I don't believe that if he doesn't have any feelings towards you."
At that moment Bonnie felt deflated, "No way! We haven't even talked much! How could he possibly be interested in someone like me? Shouldn't lawyers be more discerning?" "Lawyers are also human beings who can meet people they like; what does being discerning have to do with it?" Yanis retorted.
"Well...what I mean is...there's only Myles who would..." When mentioning Myles' name, Bonnie paused then continued nonchalantly, "People usually can't handle someone like me." "That may not necessarily be true."
"But it definitely shouldn't be Lane." "Why not Myles then?"
Bonnie remained silent as she couldn't argue with Yanis anymore. However, because of Lane's words just now, Bonnie felt a little uneasy in her heart.
But sometimes things happen by chance. When Nancy's husband arranged the seating, Yanis was on the left and Lane was on the right.
If Bonnie hadn't noticed anything before, she might even have chatted with Lane for a while.
But once she noticed something different, Bonnie felt uncomfortable all over but couldn't show it too obviously.
Fortunately, there was a man sitting next to Lane who seemed to be familiar with him and kept talking to him. This made Bonnie relax a bit.
During dinner though, Lane did take care of her and Yanis.
Perhaps because of her preconceived notions about him now though, Bonnie always felt that Lane had "ulterior motives".
Just after finishing dinner here though, Yanis received a call from Zane saying he had just landed at city center airport and would be there in about half an hour asking where they were at present.. Yanis looked at Bonnie indicating he needed to take this call outside.
Bonnie nodded in agreement.
As soon as Yanis left however, Lane looked at her and whispered, "You seem suddenly guarded against me."
After hearing what he said, Bonnie smiled, "It's your illusion. What do I need to guard against you for? You're not a bad person."
Lane smiled back,"I'm not bad, but I am still a man."
"Huh?"Bonnie didn't quite catch his drift initially..
Lane didn't say much more about it, "How did you get here? Shall I give you guys ride back later?"
"No need. I drove here with Yanis. We'll go back together later."Bonnie replied firmly..
Lane still had that smile on his face, "Yanis received Mr. Lawrence's phone call earlier. Wasn't Mr. Lawrence supposed to pick up Yanis?"
This caught Bonnie off guard, "Then, I'll drive myself home."
Lane nodded without saying anything else this time around.
The event ended, and as they were leaving, Nancy greeted them. Bonnie walked out with Lane. Yanis came inside just after ending his phone conversation seeing them both walking out together asked if they were leaving already. He then turned towards Bonny asking if she'd said goodbye to Nancy yet. She confirmed that she had. He then asked how she planned on getting home... if Zane would come pick him up or whether or not she wanted company driving herself home. Bonny declined any help stating it has been great catching up but it is time for us all part ways until next time... Bonnie struggled to hold back the words that were about to spill out of her mouth when she noticed Lane was still there. She exchanged greetings with him before saying she had something else to do and hurriedly left. It was clear that Bonnie had fled the scene.
Lane didn't rush off because he was waiting for someone. Yanis happened to be standing at the hotel entrance, and after a moment of silence, Lane initiated the conversation.
"Bonnie and Myles had a fight?" he asked.
Yanis looked up at Lane's face curiously upon hearing his question, wondering how he knew about it.
"Nancy mentioned it in passing, so I guessed," Lane replied.
Yanis knew Nancy couldn't have introduced Bonnie to Lane for real; it must have been just a casual remark. But if Lane could guess that they fought, Yanis became even more certain of what was on his mind: He definitely liked Bonnie.
"It's just a minor disagreement; they often argue like this but will make up in a few days," Yanis said reassuringly.
Lane glanced at Yanis and said abruptly, "You can tell?"
This caught Yanis off guard for a moment before she regained her composure and responded calmly: "Mr. Phillips, Bonnie likes Myles; they won't break up."
Lane still wore a faint smile on his lips as he continued speaking: "Yanis, don't misunderstand me. I won't interfere with other people's relationships while they're dating normally. That's not right... But..." He paused briefly before continuing: "If one day things don't work out between them... I'll express my feelings proactively."
Lane spoke carefully and tactfully which made it difficult for Yanis to say anything further since she wasn't involved in their relationship matters either way- even if she is close friends with Bonnie- as such decisions should be left solely up to them both.
She simply nodded lightly in response: "When that time comes... if Mr. Phillips has an opportunity or desire then Mr. Phillips is free."
With this statement from Yanis acknowledging his freedom of choice regarding any future romantic endeavors with Bonnie should things go south between her current boyfriend Myles- Lanes' heart skipped slightly faster than usual but he kept himself composed enough not show any signs of excitement or anticipation yet as there were no guarantees such an opportunity would arise anytime soon... Changing topics smoothly, Lane asked casually:"Is Mr. Lawrence coming over here?"
The conversation ended there as Lawrence arrived shortly thereafter, and all three went inside together without another word spoken outside.
